brat ion we are inaugurating for your convenience, a

Spring and later a Fall edit ion.

We gratefu l ly thank our numerous readers and

advert isers for their magnificent support and shall

in the future continue to give them the travel service

information for which these edit ions have become so

well known.



FOREWORD

Millions of people hit the road each year, to get away from

their old surroundings, to see and learn how people live, and

meet new and old friends.

Modern travel has given millions of people an opportunity

to see the wonders of the world. Thousands and thousands of

dollars are spent each year on various modes of transportation.

Money spent in this manner brings added revenue to tradesmen

throughout the country.

The White t raveler has had no difficulty in getting accom

modations, but with the Negro it has been different. He, before

the advent of a Negro travel guide, had to depend on word

of mouth, and many times accommodations were not available.

Now things are different. The Negro traveler can depend

on th e "G RE EN BOOK" for all the inform ation he wan ts, and

has a wide selection to choose from. Hence this guide has made

traveling more popular, without encountering embarrassing

situations.

We appreciate letters from the public tell ing us about

places that are not l isted in the "GREEN BOOK." We also

welcome your comments and opinions. We are now and shall

always continue to be interested in your welfare. Your co

operation will enable us to reach the summit of our goal and

further our efforts in giving "ASSURED PROTECTION FOR

THE NEGRO TRAVELER."

MANY HAPPY RETURNS

An anniversary is l ike a bir thday. Both happy occasions t inged with

expectant hopes and dreams. Af ter twenty years in c i rcu la t ion there are

many th ings to wax sent imental about in re t rospect . The concept ion , the

first stumbling steps, difficulties in adolescence, then the ripening years of

maturity; when at long last the realization of fulf i lment. On this the

threshold of i ts twentieth year , the editor pledges anew to make each

issue of your Green Book better than the one before. Retrospection may

be for his tor i an s but since ann ive rsar ie s are celebrated w ith a cer tain

amount of modest pr ide, al low me to present to you the story of your

travel guide and the man behind the book—the Green Book that is .

Our leaders and educators look forward to the day when as a racial

group, we will enjoy the r ights and privileges guaranteed us, but as of

now withheld in cer tain areas of these United States. With this in mind,

the idea was conceived by Victor H. Green, publisher-owner of the unique

N eg ro M otorist Green Book about 1932. The idea crystall ize d when, not

only himself but several f r iends and acquaintances complained of the

diff icult ies encountered; of tentimes painful embarrassments suffered which

ruined a vacation or business tr ip .

Subsequently in 1936, along with a fr iend, George I . Smith, the dream

became a reali ty . The f irst edit ions were published. After two years

however, Mr. Smith lef t the organization. Will iam H. Green, brother of

the publisher, joined the staff in 1938 and remained as editor until his

death in 1945.

The first issues in 1936 of the Green Book were published locally.

The demand was so great that by the following year i t became a national

insti tution. Endorsed and in use by the United States Travel Bureau,

Idlewild Chamber of Commerce of Michigan; in use by the American

Automobile Association and its hundreds of affiliated clubs throughout

the country, Travel Bureaus, Bus Lines and other organizations. One of

their greates t en thusias ts has been James A. Jackson, Specia l Repre

sen tativ e of the E sso Sta nda rd Oil Co., who has used thes e guides , has

helped i t to prosper and has personally directed an all out campaign to

enlighten the traveler about the numerous f ine Negro business places

throughout the country , a t the same t ime while a t tending to h is dut ies

. . . a ll in teres ted in bet ter serv ice to the t rav el in g public .

A supplementary d irectory of summer resor ts was a lso issued as the

Green Book Vacation Guide. The Green Book which had by now become

indispensable to the Negro traveller grew quickly in circulation, due to

the growth of the motor ing publ ic . Summer and winter resor ts which

previously depended on the word-of-mouth advertising soon found i t highly

profitable to have a Green Book listing.



In 1947 the Green Book, originally known as The Negro Motorist

Green Book, A Classified Motorist and Tourist Guide, included listings

covering the United States and Alaska. In 1949 i t expanded i ts l is t ings

to Bermuda, Mexico and Canada. In 1952 i t became known as The Negro

Travelers Green Book. Today with l is t ings in South America and the

West Indies and future plans for European and West African circulation,

i t has truly become an international travel guide.

In 1947 another valuable service was extended to Green Book read

e rs . This was the Vacation Reservation Service which enabled the public

to book in advance reservations to any hotel or resort l is ted.

Victor H. Green, a native New Yorker , is a man of tremendous drive

and energy. Retired in 1952 af ter 39 years of service as a let ter-carr ier

from the Post Office Department. He is marr ied to the former Alma Duke

of Richmond, Virginia. Tall well-buil t , always impeccably groomed, with

an easy affable manner . The Grover Whelan of our group as many visitors

to his West 135th Street, New York office will verify.

The integrity with which he has always dealt with subsscribers and

advertisers in the past are evident today in view of competit ion. Certain

advertisers who cater directly to the traveling public, had at one t ime

allowed their account to lapse. The demand for the Green Book was so

persistent, that they in turn had to yield to the demands to provide the

requested copies.

He regrets the shortsightedness of most of our business men to see

the urgent need and value of advertising. "If Negro-owned business is

good" he says , " i t can be bet ter with adver t is ing ." His phi losophy is that

we can create our OWN "name brands ." We should) have th e patien ce to

build. Build for ourselves and the future of our children. The Green Book

is the symbol of one man's patience. Today, twenty years later , i t is an

established business.

He deplores the apparent lack of interest among our young people

in the lucrative field of advertising. The need of trained personnel is

acute . He urges more youngsters to take advantage of the oppor tuni t ies

offered. This in turn will create greater achievements in our business

ventures .

As the editor , he experiences great satisfaction and encouragement

in receiving thousands of let ters each year in appreciation of the Green

Book. Numerous visi tors come into his office to offer congratulations and

to leave their orders for the following year .

In the earlier years he personally travelled across the United States

to check the accuracy and conditions of places listed. Now, due to the

press of business, he can no longer make as many tr ips but must rely

on agents in the field. Incidentally, there is still a great need for new

agents .

In looking ahead . . . a t r ip to the moon? W ho know s? I t m ay not

be so im prob able as it sounds. A New Y ork scie ntist is alr ea dy offering

comes available, you can be sure your Green Book will have the recom

mended l ist ing s Un ti l then, for 1956 several thing s are being planned

These are the days of itching feet and lifting of the heart. Of course,

boots may extend to three, four or even s ix weeks. In any event , we

would like to offer some suggestions which may help you in planning

your vacation this summer.

No matter where your dest ination, you wil l need a good basic

wardrobe. Not necessari ly expensive but cool , easy to pack and suitable

for the type of vacation planned. Basic rule should be dark cool cottons,

sheers and l ightweight rayons for ci ty wear. Pastels , gay colored prints

and seersuckers for the country . The fac t tha t these mater ia ls a re quick-

drying makes i t easier to be always neatly groomed on the hottest day.

Don' t forget children's clothes need just about as much careful planning.

Sunsuits for the kids should be limited to country and beach wear only.

As a t ip to motoris ts , before you pack your bags, i t is advisable to

check with your car insurance agencies if you are planning tr ips outs ide

the U. S. , to see if coverage can be arranged.

By way of condit ioning motoris ts for safe driving, a set of rules were

laid down in a recent nation-wide campaign by the President 's Committee

For Traffic Safety. We should all try to follow these rules throughout

the year. Part icularly on a vacation.

The do's and don' ts on driving which the committee emphasized

inc lude:

Obey all traffic regulations.

Be sportsmanlike with fel low-drivers .

Start earl ier , progress s lower and keep speed reasonable.

Don' t drink and drive.

Danger increases with darkness; cut speed at dusk to keep

within brake range of headl ights .

Stay in traffic lanes, do not pass without ample room and never

do so o,n hills or curves.

Keep ample s topping space between your car and the car ahead.

Be watchful at interse ction s; be sure to s ignal you r intentio ns

to turn or s top.

Check brakes, windshield wipers , t i res and s teering mechanism

before you s tar t on tha t t r ip .

NATIONWIDE HOTEL ASSOCIATION

The Nationwide Hotel Association 's bulletin is t i t led "Hospitali ty"

and that is jus t what th is great Negro hotel associa t ion means; p lus

"Service." They are organized to better serve the

public—the

millions

of people who travel the year round for business and vacations.

The bulletin was received at our office before we went to press and

we want to quote to you excerpts of an address by Mr. Dykes Brookins,

national president, at a reception held at the new Dunbar Hotel , Wash

ington,

D.C.

enti t led, "The Challenge to the Negro Hotel Owners." "Today

we are making rapid str ides in the f ield of interracial relations. In almost

every section of the country color barr iers are being broken down. Segre

gation created the need for the Negro businessman as we know him.

Negroes in the past went into business to meet the needs of our people

because other businessmen did not want our business. From the begin

n ing we planned only to serve the Negro public; we had a monopoly.

As a resu l t the Negro Businessman is not prepared to en ter the market

serving all people. The N H A is aware of this problem and believes that

the salvation of the Negro business man and particular ly in the hotel

industry l ies in raising standards. I am convinced the Negro traveler

would just as soon stop among his own if he could get—not comparable,

but fair accommodations.

Negro hotels are meeting this problem each year , the month of

March is set aside as Clean Up-Paint Up Month and every member is

expected to take part and make a contr ibution to the success of this

month-long campaign. Every hotel owner is expected to make some im

provement in his place.

"Some will modernize the

lobby—others

will install a new heating

system or improve the plumbing. Some will replace old worn furniture—

others will install new modern lighting fixtures. Some will put in air-

conditioning—others

will add private baths or install wall to wall carpet

ing. All are expected to go through their hotels from top to bottom

with a list of items on a special form sent out from the main office,

thoroughly inspect and put in first class working order.

"The month of April is set aside as Public Inspection Month, when

the general public is invited to come and see the improvements that have

been made.

"Yes the program of the N H A is an ambitious one," Brookins

stated, but one designed with the interest of the traveling public in

mind. "We want you to have confidence in us, in our program, in our

abilit

to see this thing through. A confidence tempered with

understand

ing and patience; knowing that these problems which cannot be solved

overnight , are , never the less being given the very bes t a t ten t ion th a t

organization and trained minds can give them.

"We want you to patronize those es tab l ishments who are members

of the NHA, because in spite of all the problems and handicaps, s tandards

are being raised, services are being improved, buildings are being modern

ized and well equipped motels are being buil t throughout the country

where they are needed.

"When you are traveling, s top at a hotel , motel or guest house that

displays the NHA emblem—they are "Your fr iendly hosts from Coast

to Coast."
