ABOUT NID
On April 7, 1958, the Eameses presented the India Report to the Government of India. The Eames Report defined the underlying spirit that would lead to the founding of NID and beginning of design education in India. The Report recommended a problem-solving design consciousness that linked learning with actual experience and suggested that the designer could be a bridge between tradition and modernity. The Report called upon future designers to re-examine the alternatives of growth available to the country at that time.
Based on the recommendations made in the India Report, the Government of India with the assistance of the Ford Foundation and the Sarabhai family established the National Institute of Industrial Design, as it was originally called as an autonomous all-India body in September 1961 at Ahmedabad. Gautam Sarabhai and his sister Gira were played a major role in the establishment and early years of NID. Gautam Sarabhai sidestepped the accepted wisdom and conventional method of education . He revived the philosophy of the Bauhaus design movement which was learning by doing. This unique curriculum and revolutionary educational philosophy remain part of NID to the present day.
Today the National Institute of Design is internationally acclaimed as one of the finest educational and research institutions for Industrial, Communication, Textile and IT Integrated (Experiential) Design. It is an autonomous institution under the aegis of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India and is recognised by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation.
The aim is To provide design intervention for craft, handloom, rural technology, small, medium and large scale enterprises, and outreach programmes for capability and institution building and sustainable livelihood, employment opportunities and economic growth.
NID has been a pioneer in industrial design education after Bauhaus and Ulm in Germany and is known for its pursuit of design excellence to make Designed in India, Made for the World a reality. NID's graduates have made a mark in key sectors of commerce, industry and social development by taking role of catalysts and through thought leadership.
NEED ASSESSMENT STUDY | AURANGABAD | MSME 2013 4
PurposeTo increase awareness about the value of design and establish design learning in MSMEs.To increase competitiveness of MSME products and services through design.
ObjectivesTo create a sustainable design ecosystem for the MSME sector through continuous learning and skill development. To promote use of design by MSMEs for developing products and services that are market led.To focus on building the design capability of MSMEs to enable them to improve business performance as well as compete in the global market.
Key principlesAdopting a rigorous, yet applicant friendly, process.Promoting and disseminating design concepts in regional or local languages understood by the MSMEs.Establishing benefits without overwhelming the MSMEs.Learning from other successful design-support programmes.Establishing systematic processes for design and product development in MSMEs.
Scheme descriptionFor easy percolation of design thinking and philosophy and maximum benefit for MSME units the Design Clinic Scheme is divided at 3 broader levels. These activities are helpful in smooth transition in to several levels of design intervention in industrial and business activities of MSMEs.Design Awareness SeminarThe design sensitisation seminar is aimed to create a platform for MSME units to improve the manufacturing competitiveness. The seminar will help MSME participants to interact with design experts/speakers to understand design methodology and benefits of design to MSME in their business, product, process, service and operations. To take design to a higher level of manufacturing functions, it is very important to develop an understanding of the design scenario and environment at an early stage of conception.
Design Awareness ProgrammeThe design awareness programme is focused on exploring industrial functions and activities to develop a holistic map of MSME clusters and units. The design expert/s will generate design information about products, market scenario, technology, communication, research and development, and various industrial functions along with human factor study for ergonomics, safety, convenience, learning and skill up gradation through design research. The programme will also provide design remedies for identified opportunities through the design clinic workshop.
ABOUT DCS-MSME
NEED ASSESSMENT STUDY | AURANGABAD | MSME 2013 5
The design awareness programme is conducted in two stages.- Need Assessment Survey- Design Clinic Workshop
Design ProjectsDesign projects are identified during the need assessment survey and discussed during the design clinic workshop. Project which require intensive design observation and interventions can be taken up as design projects with the help of design experts. The project can be related to design intervention in area of product/process /strategic areas where design can help in generating solutions and value for individual or group of MSMEs.
Role of Design in Improving Competitiveness:Design is an approach, process and methodology. Design is indented, purposeful, contextual, which is aimed to create advantage, distinction and futuristic outcome as a result. Design is systemic and holistic in nature, there fore helps in generating more creative, impactful and sustainable solutions. In manufacturing, design is commonly associated with industrial product design – specifically the ‘aesthetics and appearance’ of a product at a surface level interaction. However, the application of design is much broader, for example designing for functional appeal, ease of manufacture, consumption and sustainability. Designing may also be done for reliability or quality or business processes. Service designs are primarily to cater to customers experience of the delivered product and service. The larger purpose of design is to do things in a better manner, to improve a situation and to make a positive difference. The role of design in business is to create value. A company can use the design process to add value to products, services, and the organisation. A well-designed product, service, or organisation is always more valuable.Design, innovation and growth are linked. Innovation and design are not simply about new products or technology. They are also about how to improve products for everyday use, leading to reduced costs, increased usability and new business opportunities. Design is recognised as an innovative discipline that can help MSMEs to sustain and grow in an increasingly competitive market.
NEED ASSESSMENT STUDY | AURANGABAD | MSME 2013 6
Need Assessment survey is part of Design clinic scheme from Ministry of MSME, Govt.. of India. The Scheme has been implemented in partnership with NID, National Institute of Design based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.MCED, Maharashtra Centre for Entrepreneurship Development, Aurangabad selected Engineering-Cluster for conducting NAS and Workshop for Design clinic scheme. The cluster members are enrolled to 2 day design seminar, where design experts from industry give presentation on design.Engineering-Cluster member primarily from Chikalthana and Waluj industrial area enrolled for Need assessment survey. A list of 29 MSME units were finalized by MCED officials.
The term business cluster, also known as an industry cluster, competitive cluster, or Porterian cluster, was introduced and popularized by Michael Porter in The Competitive Advantage of Nations (1990). The importance of economic geography, or more correctly geographical economics, was also brought to attention by Paul Krugman in Geography and Trade (1991). Cluster development has since become a focus for many government programs.
Michael Porter claims that clusters have the potential to affect competition in three ways:
• By increasing the productivity of the companies in the cluster, • By driving innovation in the field, • And by stimulating new businesses in the field.
According to Porter, in the modern global economy, comparative advantage—how certain locations have special endowments (i.e., harbour, cheap labour) to overcome heavy input costs—is less relevant. Now, competitive advantage—how companies make productive use of inputs, requiring continual innovation—is more important.
Michael Eugene Porter (born May 23, 1947) is the Bishop William Lawrence University Professor at Harvard Business School. He is a leading authority on company strategy and the competitiveness of nations and regions. Michael Porter's work is recognized in many governments, corporations and academic circles globally.
INTRODUCTION
NEED ASSESSMENT STUDY | AURANGABAD | MSME 2013 7
The phenomena that are analysed are classified into six broad factors incorporated into the Porter diamond, which has become a key tool for the analysis of competitiveness:Factor conditions are human resources, physical resources, knowledge resources, capital resources and infrastructure.Demand conditions in the home market can help companies create a competitive advantage, when sophisticated home market buyers pressure firms to innovate faster and to create more advanced products than those of competitors.Related and supporting industries can produce inputs which are important for innovation and internationalization. These industries provide cost-effective inputs, but they also participate in the upgrading process, thus stimulating other companies in the chain to innovate.Firm strategy, structure and rivalry constitute the fourth determinant of competitiveness. The way in which companies are created, set goals and are managed is important for success. But the presence of intense rivalry in the home base is also important; it creates pressure to innovate in order to upgrade competitiveness.Government can influence each of the above four determinants of competitiveness. Clearly government can influence the supply conditions of key production factors, demand conditions in the home market, and competition between firms. Government interventions can occur at local, regional, national or supranational level.Chance events are occurrences that are outside of control of a firm. They are important because they create discontinuities in which some gain competitive positions and some lose.

NEED ASSESSMENT STUDY | AURANGABAD | MSME 2013 11
The name is derived from the Mughal ruler, Aurangazeb. Its ancient history dates back up to the eras of Buddhism, but the modern history of Aurangabad is traced back to 1610. The Buddhist caves in Aurangabad and Ellora are the clear evidence of strong Buddhism influence and influx around the city in earlier times.
A prime minister of the Muslim Kingdom of Ahmednagar, Malik Ambar established a town at a village called Khirki. Later, his son Fateh Khan named the town as Fatehpur in 1626. Mohammad Bin Tughlaq tried to switch over the capital of his Delhi sultanate to Fatehpur in 14th century keeping in mind the strategic location of the town. The town was at the centre of India, and the region was considered the safest from the marauding armies of the Afghan and Central Asian raiders.
When Aurangazeb took over the Deccan kingdoms, he changed the name of the town to Aurangabad in 1653. Aurangazeb used the town as the strategic point to suppress the rising power of Shivaji. Aurangabad was taken over by the Nizam of Hyderabad after the death of Aurangazeb in 1707 that retained control till it was merged with Maharashtra in 1956.
The current day Aurangabad offers a wonderful opportunity to step back to past history. Ajanta and Ellora caves and Bibi-Ka-Makbara bring back the visitors to the past history of the town.

About MarathwadaThe name Marathwada identifies one of the five regions in Maharashtra state of India. The region coincides with the Aurangabad Division. The term “Marathwada” has its origin in the word “Mara-hatti-vada (Mar-hat-vada)”, meaning a region of Maratha community. On November 1, 1956, Marathwada was transferred from Hyderabad state to Bombay state. On May 1, 1960, Bombay state was divided into Maharashtra and Gujarat states, Marathwada becoming a part of the former. Aurangabad is the headquarters of Marathwada it derived its name from Aurangzeb who ruled it for a brief period.

The small and medium scale industries play a very important role in the Indian economy as they provide employment to about 14 million persons andcontribute to 40% of the industrial production equivalent to 7% of the gross national product besides, the sector generate 35% of the direct exports. One of theMechanizing to promote SME development that become popular world over is the idea of industrial clustering.A cluster is sectoral and geographical concentration of enterprises in particular SME, employing similar process scale of operation and producing similar products but faced with common opportunities and threat.
The following report is a cluster level report of the interactive study of Engineering cluster of Aurangabad.

Momentum to Industrial Growth :Aurangabad and its surrounding region did not have any Industrial presence till 1960. After reorganization of Maharshtra and the merger of Marathwada as a Division in 1960, the industrial development got special momentum due to designated backward area benefits. As a fall out of this policy, MIDC established number of industrial estates at various locations in and around Aurangabad, which in three decades transformed the region with viable industrial agglomerations.
Present Industrial Status of Aurangabad:• 5th largest industrial district in Maharashtra after Pune, Raigad, Nashik and Thane.• Currently has 5 MIDCs and 2 Growth Centres.• An industrial base for sectors such as automotives, auto components, white goods, appliances, breweries and pharmaceuticals etc..• More than 3500 small and large companies providing employment to more than 1 lakh people in the district.• Bordered by Nashik, Jalna and Ahmednagar districts of Aurangabad which has substantial industrial presence.
Prominent Industries: Aurangabad has emerged as a strong industrial base mostly due to the efforts of first generation entrepreneurs. Aurangabad has been a preferred destination for the following category of industries.• Automobiles Assembly• Auto Components• Beverages• Pharmaceuticals• White Goods and• Plastic and Rubber Products

• The new owner is the son of the founder, he wants to upgrade the set up which has been functioning as a non standard fabrication workshop, into a structured and standardized company, the biggest road block is that the margins are not high enough to accelerate the process. Also, absence of a production engineer or a skilled foreman has caused irregularities in the process, hence the maximum utilization of the workers and resources in not happening. • Lighting conditions need to be improved. Use of daylight is recommended• Workstation issues need to be addressed• Market Awareness is needed

CLUSTER ACTORS
FINDINGS & OBSERVATIONSOur finding suggested that the cluster lacks exposure to market as most of the units is catering to OEM based job work wherein each and every detail is specified by the client not leaving any scope of design intervention in terms of product design and development. Some of them have ideas about the products they want to diversify with, but the problem is the market awareness.
Looking at the long term prospect and growth of the cluster it is very important to understand the importance of interdependency.More you support each other more you grow. There should be common business platform for the entire cluster where people can share there strength and weakness come up with a cumulative solution wherein everybody gets benefited.
The cluster should contribute towards developing a common market place in their area where all the manufacturers can individually showcase and market their products and processes continuously, Basically a concept of a live expo.
NEED ASSESSMENT STUDY | AURANGABAD | MSME 2013 185
MACHINES AND TOOLS
Conventional machines like Milling , threading , turning etc. are being used for doing machining operations and use of CNC’s / low cost automation by using hydraulics / pneumatics / PLC’s is almost negligible in most of the unitsDue to low awareness and also due to lesser speeds achieved on conventional machines , high efficiency carbide or bymatellic toolings are not being used in most of the units .
TECHNOLOGY
NEED ASSESSMENT STUDY | AURANGABAD | MSME 2013 186
Packing and Packaging in case of export items is done in as per customer requirements by using corrugated boxes , In case of local sale material is packed in polythene bags , which are very difficult to handle and disturb the 5S (SORT / SET IN ORDER / SHINE / STANDARISED)also. For domestic and local dispatch fabricated plastic or steel bins can be made which can be re-used for multiple consignment , thereby improving the environment also.
LOGISTIC PACKING AND TRANSPORTATION
NEED ASSESSMENT STUDY | AURANGABAD | MSME 2013 187
In most of the companies the layout is not according to the process flow of majority of components. When a component moves haphazardly during processes . Its travel distance increases and also its material handling / transportation cost increases.Layout shall be reviewed in the light of process flow to reduce the travel distance of the component.
LAYOUT
NEED ASSESSMENT STUDY | AURANGABAD | MSME 2013 188
In most of the units assembly and packing / packaging operations are being done by persons sitting on floor. This puts more strain on work , thereby reducing the productivity . Arrangements should be made to make work stations in such a way that workers work while standing .For workers working on machines gravity chutes etc. are not being used . They have to lift the material for processing and then put the material after processes, by bending themselves. This also puts strain and reduces productivity.
ERGONOMICS
NEED ASSESSMENT STUDY | AURANGABAD | MSME 2013 189
For material handling trolleys are being used in most of the units but trolleys are moved manually only. Use of Fork Lifters , Pallet lifters and hoists / cranes is done by very few of them .There is a need to identify and start using mechanized material handing system as mentioned above :-
MATERIAL HANDLING

NEED ASSESSMENT STUDY | AURANGABAD | MSME 2013 191
Market: • units and are always under pressure to keep prices low in spite of rising input costs• The cluster units have enough critical mass to promote their common brand subject to form the marketing consortia• have a poor bargaining power and limited capacity to handle larger orders• appearing to be customers driven units
Finance & Credit: • The financial planning, control & accounting system is not properly maintained by most of units due to lack of adequate resources and exposure• The return on investment in comparatively low • The entrepreneurs also loose goodwill for delayed payment to the suppliers• The relationship between the cluster units and borrower & Fls seems to be comparatively week• Infrastructure: Limited growth scope in basic infrastructure• The units are not able to maintain delivery schedules due to logistics bottlenecks• The social infrastructures are also inadequate at Aurangabad• There is an alarming gap between supply & potential demand for the infrastructure / required for high growth
Business Development Services• The Business development Services have not grown at Aurangabad as it has been at Pune & Mumbai• There is absence of Technology solution providing agents/agencies equipped with R&D facilities, testing facilities and Marketing expertise

They can venture in Cashew oil processing as they already generate scrap from Cashew processing and the scrap is sold at a nominal price where as Cashew oil sells for high price. Some Low cost investment methods were suggested by the design team.
There is acute need of restructuring the process of manufacturing and experiment for better use of scrap.
Better branding methods were suggested to increase the reach and saleMore methods to sell cashew were suggested such as small packets can be made from damaged / chipped cashew which can be branded as special purpose such as ready made cashew for use in sweets/ finely chopped cashew for domestic cooking, Hotels and Restaurants.

5. Raw cashew shell chopping machine
This kaju cutting machine could be re-designed with customised function to increase the productivity, save time, manpower and money.
The machine would cut kaju at three different steps...Step one would cut bigger kaju at level oneStep two... The medium size kaju will pass through level one and will be cut here.Step three... The smaller size kaju which is not cut with athe above two steps will get cut here.
This will reduce process of sorting which consume lot of time as current machine only cuts one size kaju and there is lot irregularities in cutting because of size variations.
Mr. Nilesh Pujari in one on one discussion with Mr. Ravinder Singh Final Packaging

We feel obliged that we were a part of such a wonderful group of big industries who we could probably help to grow more with a little of experience we have. It would be a better India tomorrow with these kind of workshop and participation. Also, it would be a privilege to take up the design projects that you want to execute. You were a great group and your enthusiasm and positive spirit helped make out time together productive and fun.
