The go-to provider of…

WA Machines

WA Consumables

Atlas’ second machine may be smaller, but it is ready to compete with its big brother After welding with the largest roll cladder in North America since 2012, Atlas Machine and Supply Inc. have purchased a smaller version from Welding Alloys to weld components up to 8000kg. The new machine has been designed to simplify operations and incorporate many of the same components as their original machine to reduce the need for spare parts.

During the two-day visit, Richie Gimmel, Brent Blanc (Atlas) and Matt Reiff (WA USA) were shown the full capability of the machine by Reda Boujlil (senior customer support engineer). The machine was put through a series of tests, welding oscillate and stringer bead with step every 360° or spiral movement using the sub arc and gas shielding process.

Welding Alloys has proven itself as a reliable partner and discussions have already started on a third fixed installation machine, as well as applications where our range of portable equipment can be used.

Richie told us what makes Welding Alloys the “go to provider of welding equipment” for Atlas

“The choice to buy a second machine from Welding Alloys was an easy one. While other companies make welding machines, Welding Alloys takes the time to understand our business, and work together with our people to ensure we get the right machine. The result is a custom, collaborative solution that will be a profitable part of our business for many years to come.”

David Butler, Machines manufacturing director

Industrial Applications driving Innovation in Welding Consumables The latest materials with custom-tailored properties often demand advanced welding consumables and innovative processing. In other words, they are well in line with Welding Alloys’ DNA. Silicon is becoming more and more important as an alloy in stainless steels, designed to resist against highly oxidizing acids like boiling nitric acid or concentrated hot sulfuric acid. URANUS S1, ZECOR or SANDVIK SX are all proprietary high silicon austenitic stainless steels with an ever-increasing range of industrial applications. These steels contain about 5% silicon, which improves the corrosion resistance in hot strong acid, but presents a real challenge when it comes to good welding properties, productivity and appearance. The Welding Alloys Group works with engineering companies and steel manufacturers to develop and produce practical solutions - GMAW and FCAW consumables - to weld these steels. Our challenging objective was to design a Ø 1.2 mm metal-cored wire that meets our customers’ required mechanical

properties, which combined with suitable welding procedures offers a complete solution. Industrial testing in collaboration with end-users & steel manufacturers led to a new wire product launch: TUBE S 361-G. TUBE S 361-G is primarily designed to join stainless steel 1.4361 but is suitable as well for dissimilar welding of the steels mentioned above. It is a metal-cored wire that is already used in production by a leading European vessel manufacturer. TUBE S 361-G outperforms GTAW (TIG welding) in terms of deposition rate, whilst weldability is far improved when compared to GMAW (MIG welding) with solid wire.

Safety firstFollowing the success of the WA Health & Safety Awareness week in 2018 plans are in place to hold a similar H&S Awareness week in 2019. The date and content is yet to be decided, but we hope everyone will find it as informative and as much fun as this year.

At Welding Alloys, we are always looking at new ways to improve safety in the workplace and have introduced a number of other new initiatives in 2018. These include:

• Friday Safety emails - tips for keeping safe on various topics

• Sparky - we held a H&S logo competition and the winning logo showed Sparky with a Safety First sign.

• Central Portal for H&S - we now have a central portal for H&S information that can be easily accessed from various sites around the Group.

• Internal H&S audits - these have proved to be very successful and have been a great way of educating people on hazards that exist within their sites.

• Our CEO, Dominic Stekly, also sent out a mid-year review and message to all employees to reinforce the importance of being vigilant at all times as well as reporting any hazards/unsafe acts

• We also now have a corporate H&S video with messages on health and safety from our Executive Team.

So - at Welding Alloys - as Sparky says with a thumbs up below - Safety First.

What’s up inNorth America?More Power

Sweet Success

Welding Alloys USA expands their Integra workshop to support a leading Coal Power OEM. Over the summer, WA USA acquired three new roll manipulators to expand the capacity of their Integra operations. With these additional machines, it is possible to weld 250-300 rolls per year for the Coal Power industry.

There are now five roll manipulators in the integra workshop – One 15 ton, two 5 ton and two 3 ton manipulators. With the automation of the Welding Alloys equipment, we intend to run

all four or five manipulators with one person working a full shift on these machines and an additional person available to provide support.

In September, we started delivering the first rolls to the OEM and they were pleased with the result. We are looking forward to helping this OEM grow their repair business with our dedicated solutions for the Coal Power industry.

Jeffery Watkins, WA USA President

Welding Alloys USA and Reptec de Guatemala continue to have sweet success in the Sugar Industry. During the 2018 repair season, Reptec have been hard at work hardfacing 186 sugar maces for 12 different mills in Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Belize.

We predict that this momentum will continue for the 2018-2019 crushing season, where we expect to be applying Chapisco to over 20 mills. This would require the use of a combination of WA machines and consumables dedicated to the sugar industry, including 14 Sugar Mill Kits, 6 Zucar Manual Torches and in some smaller mills, our new Max Extract Electrodes.

The outlook is also very positive in the US, where our success continues to grow with the focus of longer-life with our Max Extract Plus wires. The largest US sugar mill has installed our Sugar Mill Kits on their second line to be able to apply Max Extract Plus during the crushing season, following a successful trial during the 2017-2018 season.

KW at Expomina 2018KW Technologies was invited to participate in Expomina Peru 2018, the most important world mining fair of the year. This year we exhibited together with our partner Exanco with whom we developed our sales strategy in Peru.

In an extraordinary business context, KW had the opportunity to showcase its flagship product in the region (our HardplateTM 100). The exhibition included high-level exhibitors from different countries who make up the large spectrum of mining providers in Peru.

During the show, several people linked directly or indirectly to mining visited and were very enthusiastic about KW products.

KW has the opportunity to continue expanding its business in Peru through its partners Exanco and Welding Alloys Peru. It has also been suggested that KW promote the benefits of its products, which already have a very good record, in other countries such as Mexico and Chile.

We hope to have more opportunities like this to continue to develop our brand and continue to penetrate the market so that our products reach more customers who can enjoy the benefits of choosing plates that are truly resistant to wear. KW products provide a real solution to abrasion and impact, which in turn increases the lifetime of equipment.

KW Technologies has been created in association with WAG and the major mining distributor Kupfer Hermanos S.A. and is estab-lished in Santiago, Chile, to respond to the mining market demand.

What’s up inEurope 1?Trust in TRI S RW-O to keep you on the right track!

Working together as One Welding Alloys

In France, since the 1980s, urban tramways have made a remarkable comeback. Within Europe, as in many other countries throughout the world, issues like fossil fuel dependency, traffic jams and demands concerning sustainable urban development are strong motivators for urban light rail. Today, there are approximately 30 cities in France where a tramway network is present, totaling more than 700km of rails. For many years, aluminothermy was the most common process used for joining these rails, however, in recent times, rail flash-butt welding has been further developed and is becoming more and more common practice. While both welding processes are well established and offer several advantages, end-users are now looking for an alternative solution, one that is more cost effective and/or environmentally friendly.

TRI S RW-O has been specially developed for rail joining applications and provides the following key benefits:• Short set-up time• Easy to set-up • Less fumes (compared to aluminothermy)• Reduced finishing costs (de-burring, grinding)• Minimal waste This distinct cored wire has been developed in collaboration with a key customer to find the most suitable slag allowing a high quality weld deposit. Welders will need special skills to work on such specific grooves but the results are worth it.

Bastien Gérard, WA France Sales Welding Engineer

Teamwork and collaboration are key factors of a company being successful; we must work together as One Welding Alloys to enable the company to go from strength to strength. If we support each other and keep communication lines open, we can achieve great things! In the French region, we are putting these words into actions and have initiated a new project called X’Tracks. The principle is simple; this will be a collective project involving all the subsidiaries in the region to promote our three business units - Consumables, Machines and IntegraTM Services. The project will get underway in 2019 and we will focus on promoting our products and service solutions to the Recycling Industry. Back in October, we held a kick-off meeting in Chambéry with key representatives from each of the respective countries that make up the French region. The objective was to determine the current level of industry knowledge, evaluate the experience we had already gained in our territories and finally to define an action plan for the year 2019.Aymeric Taroni, managing director at Produr, has been named Project Leader and I will be acting as the Project

Sponsor. We anticipate that all companies in the region will be able to develop their business in the Recycling Industry thanks to the sharing of skills and knowledge, and working together as One Welding Alloys.

Joaquim Antunes, WA France President

Did you know?During 2018, Welding Alloys France has been working closely with one customer who has used 5t of TRI S RW-O for one new urban rail network. Each weld requires ~2kg of wire.Next year, another project will start with similar requirements. In the coming years, several urban trams will be put into commission or upgraded. Roughly, there will be more than 165km of railway to be installed, meaning more than 18 600 welds. Moreover, due to normal wear, there is a need for maintenance every 15-20 years.

For the fifth time running, the traditional evening of welding technology took place in Hamburg on 27/09/2018. Welding Alloys Germany took the opportunity to present themselves and meet new contacts at this event, which was hosted by DVS (German Association for Welding).

The evening proved to be very interesting and educational for visitors. Topics presented included the latest developments in power sources, welding equipment, preheating, weld preparation and post-treatment, automation, virtual welding, safety at work, technical gases, extraction technology and other technical innovations. With more than 320 visitors and 26 exhibitors, this is the largest welding event in northern Germany.

Sebastian Derrix (technical advisor for welding consumables) informed guests and visitors about Welding Alloys’ impressive welding and repair concept for grinding tools for improved wear

protection on roller mills. Behind the name ‘RPMaxLife’ is a newly developed concept, which includes a completely new type of layer construction with a variety of welding consumables with even higher resistance to abrasion and impact. In addition to significantly longer life span of grinding tools with the new technology, a significant reduction in the repair and maintenance expenditures is possible. Each year, the organizer provides its guests with an interesting demonstration of an industrial process, so at nightfall we literally let sparks fly! Eduard Neumann (welder at WA Germany) provided an impressive demonstration using a Workshop Maintenance Kit and cored wire. We demonstrated mechanized gouging using the example of a grinding tool from a vertical ring mill. The process is used to remove damaged wear protection layers to prepare a base for new hardfacing. A remarkable arc provided visitors with a lasting impression. Torsten Koran (Area Sales Manager Northern Germany) complemented the demonstration with explanations of the process and was available for questions from the visitors.
