Working Together, Growing Together

Flying Start - Week 4 The sun was smiling for the fourth week of Flying Start. Taking advantage of such a great day meant we were able to enjoy the infants equipment - much fun was had climbing and sliding in the sun. Within the classroom, the Flying Starters listened keenly to The Beast Beneath the Bed by Clemency Pearce and were inspired to create their own artistic interpretations of little monsters that may reside in other hidden places. Please enjoy these highlights from the day!

Lincoln Kearney and Louise Robertson dip their hands into some funky kinetic sand.

A small group of Flying Starters hone their skills using

technology.

Kade Watling and Jonah Allwright construct their little

monsters using modelling clay.

Kade Fowler and Amelia O’Brien climbing high.

Ada Dunn gets comfortable on the spider web.

Adelyn Woods and Lily Hattam take turns enjoying the large

slide.

School Attendance …Remember • Students need to attend school regularly to

make the most of educational opportunities. • There is a direct link between school

attendance and achievement later in life. • Poor patterns of attendance in the early

years lead to poor patterns of attendance throughout the school years.

• Poor attendance makes it difficult for children to form positive relationships with their peers.

• When young people are in school every day, they are safer and less likely to be victims of crime, or become involved in crime.

Kindergarten, Year 1 & Year 2 Assembly Item On Friday 29th May the students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 will be performing their assembly item to tie in with Reconciliation Week 2015. In Term 1 the students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 were fortunate to participate in 5 weeks of Indigenous dance lessons from the dance studio, Dream Danz, which is based in Canberra.

Students will be performing an Indigenous inspired dance assembly item. For our item all students will be required to come dressed in black. Black trousers, tights and black jumpers would all be suitable for our item.

As our assembly item is celebrating Reconciliation Week, this assembly will be held at the special time of 10.45am, Friday 29th May. Please encourage all family and friends to come along to see this spectacular performance.

If you have any questions or concerns with costumes, please come and see one of the infants staff members, who will only be too happy to help.

Thank you Infants Teachers Year 1/2W become the next Mr. Wonka Year 1/2W have had the opportunity to hear many of Roald Dahl’s famous children’s stories this year and have just recently finished Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. One of the activities involved was creating their own sweet masterpieces with various chocolates and lollies, give their new creation a name and describe what their sweet delicious treat could do. The students had a wonderful time experimenting with the treats before presenting the name and the amazing thing this treat could do once eaten. The ideas and creativity were amazing but the best bit was the eating part!

Charlotte Selmes and Skyelah Gray were

busily writing down the name of their creations.

Joshua Churchill was very pleased with his amazing

sweet surprise!

Emma Robertson and Olivia Wong created their own

versions of lollipops with a bit of a twist.

Working Together, Growing Together

Infants Excursion to Canberra Theatre On Friday 24th July the students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 will be travelling to Canberra Theatre to watch the live production of “Stripey The Emu Chick”.

Imagine having to keep track of 30 small emu chicks, who are running here there and everywhere? Well, that’s what Crikey, their emu dad must do…… and when one of them goes missing, that’s when all the fun begins...

Stripey The Emu Chick is based on the hugely successful, award-winning, Stripey series of books by West Australian author, illustrator and artist, Wendy Binks. Stripey will make you laugh and make you cry, but most of all Stripey will simply steal your heart away. With oodles of audience participation, sing-a-long songs and a very cool emu chick called Stripey, Fair Dinkum Flats will never be the same! From Australia’s award-winning producer of musical theatre for kids and families (Possum Magic, Wombat Stew, Peter Rabbit) comes another toe-tapping, knee-slapping, full on musical adventure LIVE ON STAGE!

Students will be leaving school at approximately 9am and returning to school by 4pm. Children who normally catch buses to and from school will need to ensure they are at school on or before 9am. Children will need to bring a packed recess and lunch in separate plastic bags with their names clearly labelled. Disposable drink containers would be a handy idea on this excursion.

The total cost for this excursion is $36 which includes ticket and bus fare. To assist parents in making the payment for this excursion, a payment plan has been set up with first instalment of $12 per child due on 5th June, the second instalment of $12 per child due on the 26th June and the final instalment of $12 per child due on 17th July.

If there are any questions relating to this excursion please feel free to contact the school or come and talk to one of the infant staff members.

Thank you Infants Teachers

Welcome Miss Kleinig Year 1/2 K is very fortunate to have a new addition in their classroom for the next four weeks. Miss Kleinig is a student teacher from the University of Canberra. Her enthusiasm is already evident in the way she has smoothly transitioned into the Year 1/2 classroom. We look forward to sharing this time together and learning lots of new information from her. Welcome Miss Kleinig and we hope you have an enjoyable time with us.

maths puzzles with Miss Kleinig. Crookwell Shines at District Cross Country Crookwell Primary students have produced some fantastic results at the District Cross Country Carnival held at Wollondilly Primary on Monday. All students who attended proved to be fierce competitors with most students finishing in the top 15 in their age groups. Considering each race had at least 40 students competing, this was a fantastic effort.

Three students placed in the top 5 of their division will travel to Nowra next Friday to compete in the Regional Cross Country Carnival. They will be representing the Goulburn/Crookwell Schools Region which is a fantastic achievement. Emily Newman was placed 5th, Mason Kearny was placed 3rd and Cameron Herd was placed 4th in their respective divisions.

Regan Davis, Max Price and Kimberly Allport were all placed 6th and will be reserves for the Regional Carnival. We wish them good luck in the next stage of the competition.

Celebrating 150 Years! Hidden Treasures Crookwell Public School is celebrating 150 years of public education this year and we would like to put a book together that features articles and photographs from our amazing past. If you, your parents, grandparents or great grandparents attended our school as a student or staff member and you have any documents, photos or any piece of history in a safe place at home we would love to have a copy of it to add to our 150th anniversary book. The office staff are more than happy to scan photos or other documents that you might have so we can add these to our collection. Please spread the word so we can make our 150th anniversary book a wonderful piece of history that families can enjoy for years to come.

Thank you, 150th Anniversary Committee Historical Public Education Snippets

School Fees: From 1848 to 1880 tuition fees paid by pupils were used by teachers to augment their income. From 1880 until school fees were abolished, fees were paid into consolidated revenue and teachers' salaries were increased in compensation. Parents in financial difficulty circumstances were exempted from payment of school fees. Blast from the Past Mr Robert Webster, State Member and Minister for Administrative Services, was a special guest at Crookwell Public School during Education Week in 1989. He took the opportunity to present the school with an atlas of New South Wales which was gratefully accepted by school prefect Anthony Frost.

P&C Information P&C News A vote will be taken on Monday 27 July 2015 to adopt a P&C Federation recommended constitution and by-laws. If any member/parent wishes to peruse this document before this meeting, please contact the school office. All members and interested parents are encouraged to attend the meeting on 27th to have their input before a member vote is taken.

Kind Regards Billie Willis Canteen Information The Canteen Committee thought it would be a good idea to complete a survey to see if there is any interest out there for some new items to be added to the menu.

We thought for a bit of variety that maybe on a special day a few times a term we could offer more options that aren’t on the regular menu. Some options will be available in winter and some in summer.

A regular menu would still be available as it is (plus any of the new popular suggestions) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and then other new options could be available on a rotating basis on say a Tuesday or Thursday by pre-order and pre-pay only, not just ordered on the day.

Below is a list of some suggestions, please circle each option if you think they would appeal to your little ones and if you would like them added to the regular menu or to have on the other days. Feel free to add any suggestions.

The survey is attached to the back of this week’s News and Views. Please have all surveys returned to the school office by Friday 12th June. Thank-you

The Crookwell Picnic Race Club Challenge The Crookwell Picnic Race Club committee is faced with a challenge in order to race at Binda next year. Earlier this year Racing NSW staff deemed the race track not fit for racing. At a second track inspection with Racing NSW race track manager, proposals were put forward by the committee to make sure the track meets the requirements for next year.

The Club is prepared to inject around $30,000, which it will cost to fence the track, top-dress and seed. Ongoing expenses will including regular slashing of the track and removal of grass along the running rail.

Help is especially needed in the lead up to the race meeting: whipper-snipping and mowing, marking tent sites, putting rubbish bins out, erecting temporary fencing, cleaning, setting up the dining area and other tasks that the small committee is finding very difficult to do before race day. Help is also needed the day after the races when the area has to have all rubbish in the bins for the pick-up on Monday morning. The dining area has to be cleared, tables and chairs stacked, temporary fencing taken down and so on.

A public meeting will be held at the Crookwell Services Club on Thursday, 28th May at 7.30pm. If physical help is not forthcoming at the meeting, then the present committee members will be unable to do what is required to continue the proud tradition of the Binda Picnics.

If you are unable to attend the meeting but have ideas on how we can continue to race at Binda, please contact the President, David Culley, on 48 367 237, or secretary, Dianne Layden, on 48 32 1376 or 0466 996426.

Celebrate Crookwell Public School’s 150th Anniversary by Purchasing a School Paver.

In October this year the school will be celebrating the 150 year anniversary. 150 years of continuous public education on one site is an amazing achievement in such a young country. Part of our sesquicentennial celebration is to recognise past and present families of the school by providing the opportunity for a family paver to be purchased that will be on display for generations to come.

To be able to display our pavers during our 150 year celebrations, all orders must be received by the school office by Friday 26th June 2015. Payment must accompany each order form.
