Treasure from trashLandfi lls have previously been seen as just a destination at the end of a one-way street. Landfi lls are now being seen as useful repositories for a wide variety of resources, including base metals, precious metals, construction materials, and waste-derived fuels. The technical barriers for their recovery have been surmounted, and with ballooning commodity prices, the economic argument for their use is won. In some cases the remaining barriers will be legislative or regulatory - in others it may be the presence, or possible presence of undesirable constituents in the waste resource.

This event will show attendees what has previously been done in this area, what is currently underway, and what may be possible in the future. Without a doubt, there is a signifi cant amount of money to be made for operators which can take landfi ll liabilities, and by mining them, turn them into garbage gold.

Issues covered:• legislative status of landfi lls• reclamation versus mining• what’s in our landfi lls?• methane evolution• mechanics of landfi ll mining• product stream utilisation• post-mining site remediation
