Some Key Points

• A GEF-funded programme, jointly managed by UNDP and UNEP

• A six-year timeline; initiated in April 2005 (two years to be formally completed)

• Intended to provide technical support to Non-Annex I Parties to the UNFCCC for the preparation of NCs

• With the ultimate goal of assisting countries to improve the technical vigor and policy relevance of the NCs

SNC Quick Facts on Projects’ status

• 138 countries have received GEF funding

• Various stages of preparation, but majority expects to submit by end of 2010 and 2011

• More than 50 countries expect to complete a draft NC report by end of 2010

• Expected completions are likely to shift as countries make progress in NC preparation

• The NCSP has just started supporting countries on their TNCs

What we have done – NCSP Activities

• 7 sub-regional workshops on SNC covering 3 main components, but focus on V&A assessments;

• 2 Training workshops on Vulnerability and Adaptation (V&A) assessments;

• 2 Training workshop on Long range Energy Alternatives Planning System (LEAP) for mitigation analysis;

• Knowledge Networks established on website

Constraints Identified by Countries

Data issues

• Lack of comprehensive, detailed and reliable data

• Data is not available in suitable formats

• Lack of National Emission Factors

• Data access constraints

• Ensuring commitments by key stakeholders

Constraints Identified by Countries

Capacity/methodological issues

• Lack of technical capacity to carry complex studies

for V&A assessments

• Lack of finer resolution models; downscaling

• Lack of understanding on how to include extreme

climate events in climate scenarios

• Difficulties to carry out cost benefit analysis for

adaptation and mitigation analysis

Common Requests for Technical Support

• Technical training in different areas (generic)• Assistance in determining which models are most

appropriate• Assistance in application of given models such as LEAP,

Markal• Support for building socio-economic scenarios• Training on PRECIS and other modeling tools for V&A

studies• Assistance on appropriate software to use for mitigation

analysis• Capacity building for generating climate change scenarios
