But also with legitimate feelings of fear, worry and anger at the impact these evil acts are having upon innocent people and upon the freedoms of our democratic way of life. Governments and politicians must respond as they should. However, we are also called to respond in our own daily lives. As parents and as teachers this response includes how we help the children in our care to understand and make sense of these tragic events. As a school we do this by considering the values upon which the College is based. Nudgee College is proudly a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice Tradition. The values that we stand for are to be found in the Charter document and within its four Touchstones. I have shared with you on the following page the Peace Prayer of St Francis, which we have prayed throughout the week in meetings and classrooms. In this instance, the Touchstone of Justice and Solidarity means that as a College, “we recognise that we are part of a global community and we actively support the development of all humanity”. Further to this, the Touchstone means that we “nurture a culture of critical reflection and prayerful discernment in justice and peace issues”. As Christians, we are also called to be in solidarity with those who are suffering. Hence this week, our opening prayer at Assembly focused upon these recent events by highlighting the power of prayer to calm our anxieties, to help us to connect with those who are suffering and to ask for God’s grace to bring about peace in our world. At lunchtimes this week, the Chapel has also been a focus for praying the rosary by many boys and staff. The wearing of blue, white and red ribbons by many individuals has also been a reminder of the call for peace and solidarity at this time. Thank you to Ms Erin Wedge (Dean of Identity) and her staff for their leadership in prayer and solidarity this week. Tuesday’s Assembly also featured the presentation of Principal’s Awards and associated academic awards for Semester 2. The full list of award winners is featured on page 5. Congratulations to all those boys from Year 5 to 11 who were acknowledged for their effort and achievement. It was encouraging to have so many parents present at the Assembly. Hopefully, these awards will be an incentive to all students to focus their minds for the exams which commence next week. Final preparations and committed study over this last week are important in helping all students achieve to the best of their ability. We wish everyone well. Of course, exams and assessment means preparation, correction and report writing for teachers. This is a part of the job of being a teacher but also takes considerable time beyond the regular school day. Therefore, the end of semester and end of the school year are demanding times for teachers. I am grateful for the efforts of all of our teachers who work hard to encourage our students and to ensure that they make the most of their education at Nudgee College. Tonight the College formally farewells the Year 12 class of 2015 with the Valedictory Mass and Dinner. Last evening the boarding community held the farewell dinner for the Seniors. Like all the recent occasions, it was a special gathering for the boys and the staff. The Year 12s finish their exams today and after tomorrow they will be our newest Old Boys. Overall, they have been a fine Senior class. They have embraced their motto for the year - Accept the Challenge, Take the Risk. They have been well lead by an outstanding College Captain, Ben Rada Martin, and fine College Vice Captains in Bill Kidd, Alex Seccombe, Tom McNamara, Dane Brady and Reece Hewat. We are grateful for the contribution that all the boys have made over the past year as well as throughout their time at Nudgee College. Most importantly, they have shown themselves to be fine Nudgee College men and true Signum Fidei graduates. To parents, guardians and community members,

We live in challenging times. None of us need reminding of this given the events that have unfolded in Europe over the past week. It is difficult to know just how we should respond to such complex, violent crimes. With sympathy, compassion and solidarity for those who have suffered and who will continue to suffer in the future.

Peace Prayer of St Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;

where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

and whwere there is sadness, joy.

O God, grant that I may not so much

seek to be consoled as to console;

to be understood as to understand;

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

and it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.

ST JOSEPH’S NUDGEE COLLEGE NEWSLETTER 3

Drum out Poverty

On Wednesday 11 November Nudgee College staff and students participated in the worldwide ‘Drum out Poverty’ campaign to stand in solidarity with those living in poverty. Fifteen years after world leaders committed to the Global Goals, one in eight people still go hungry every day. In connection with the NINEISMINE campaign in India, led by Christian Brother Steve Rocha, Nudgee College students were among thousands of students worldwide to participate in this global advocacy campaign. Their aim was to encourage the Indian government to honour their commitment to the Global Goals by dedicating six per cent of their GDP to education and three per cent to health. The NC Drumline walked through the College and finished in front of Treacy building, where they were met by other staff and students who pledged their commitment to the Global Goals. This was filmed and will be shared among the NINEISMINE network and ERA for Change community, in an effort to raise awareness of these goals and our shared responsibility to meeting them. Thank you to Freddie Carlton-Smith, Corbin Duncan, Keshav Kumar and Nicholas Wheeler who led this campaign, and to all staff and students who contributed.

Pledge

I pledge to always advocate for encouraging governments around the world to help meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals, including; ending poverty, quality education and good health. I pledge to stand in solidarity with the poor and marginalised to ensure the Indian Government meets its commitment to a nation without extreme poverty. Extreme poverty ends with you.

A reminder for Year 7 families

Please remember to bring in two Christmas decorations to be donated to local nursing homes, as part of the College’s social justice Christmas appeal next week. Please deliver these to Sian Kennedy’s staff room in the Learning and Teaching building by Friday 20 November.

Congratulations

The College would like to congratulate Nudgee College Old Boy Br Ralph Arnell, who this year celebrated his Golden Jubilee as a Marist Brother.

Born in Innisfail in 1946, Ralph was preceded at Nudgee College by elder brothers Jim and Frank. He commenced at Nudgee College in 1960 and, after an initial bout of homesickness, became accustomed to life as a boarder, enjoying the companionship of boys from all over Queensland and beyond.

“I have a special memory of Br Bede ‘Herb’ McKennariey, a former classmate of my father Les at Gregory Terrace, who was an engaging teller of stories and a renowned football coach,” he said.

After a 20 year missionary stint in Melanesia and the Philippines, Ralph said he is enjoying more regular contact with fellow Old Boys from the class of 1963.

Br Ralph Arnell is currently living in the Marist community at Marist College Ashgrove.

Continuous Online Reporting (three years in)

Nudgee College decided in 2013 to move to a system of continuous online reporting. At any time of the year a parent or carer can see when an assessment task is due, the assessment criteria, the result and a comment relating directly to the task providing feedback on their son’s performance.

This information allows parents (and the student) to see where their son’s development needs are and action can be taken immediately so that the following assessment can show an improvement.

Parents do not receive an end of semester report that may contain comments and grades that outline a problem encountered several months earlier. Instead, the end of semester reports are a summary document containing academic grades that highlight the progress of their son in each subject, written at a point in time. The only written comment is a PC comment relating to other important aspects of College life.

The College has sent all students and parents a short survey. This survey aims to collect feedback on how this system of reporting is operating as a feedback tool and ways in which we may be able to improve the process. Please take five minutes and provide us with this important feedback.

Principal’s Awards and Habits of Mind Awards

This year we moved the Principal’s Awards and Habits of Mind Awards Assembly into late Term 4. This move ensures the College has an academically significant Assembly in each Term and that we are able to provide recognition to the boys at a relevant time - thus providing positive feedback in a more timely manner (Hattie, 2008).

The criteria for the awards presented to the students were as follows:

Each teacher was given the opportunity to nominate boys who they felt met this criteria from within their classes, regardless of previous awards received.

As with any new process, teachers will notice behaviours in certain boys and nominate students for different reasons. There are many, many boys who fit the criteria for these awards, and I certainly hope that boys who have not received an award are not discouraged and will continue to produce quality work and display persistence. I have been very encouraged by the diligence and commitment exhibited by so many of our students.

Below is the list of award winners acknowledged at Assembly. Year 5 and 6 award winners are featured in the Junior School section.

A Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition

Farewell

On Thursday evening we will celebrate the Graduation Mass and Valedictory Dinner for our Seniors of 2015. I congratulate these young men on reaching this important milestone in their lives. Looking back, many of our young men will be very proud of their classroom achievements. The assessment tasks our students are required to complete in their authority subjects demand high levels of analysis and reflection. No longer is it sufficient to be able to recall a wide range of facts and data; this information has to be transformed, applied and evaluated.

I wish our Year 12 graduates every blessing for the future and encourage them to follow their dreams and work hard to achieve their goals.

Next week the Year 11 cohort will be on exam block. They are to come to school in their correct uniform for all exams. A section of the Library will be set aside for any students who wish to complete some quiet study. Year 11 students do not have to attend school once their exams are completed. If absent for an exam students should contact the Learning and Teaching Office on 3865 0165.

Years 8 to 10 students will also be completing assessment next week. Please keep in mind that there will be exams for most boys up until Thursday 26 November. Friday will then be the last day of school.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas full of the wonderment and joy of the season and a New Year full of peace and blessings.

Mr David Johnston Dean of Learning and Teaching

ST JOSEPH’S NUDGEE COLLEGE NEWSLETTER 7

Student FormationMr Paul BeggDean of StudentsTonight we farewell the Seniors with their Graduation Mass and Valedictory Dinner here at the College. It is of course the culmination of, for most, 13 years of school. It is certainly hoped that each boy has cherished his time at Nudgee College and enjoyed the experiences, friendships and learning that have occurred. There are many to thank for such an experience; teachers, parents, relatives and friends, as all journeys of growth require a team of participants. We wish each boy well and look forward to stories of success, joy and fulfilment at the Old Boys gatherings in the future.

A great deal of work has gone into the event this evening and none more so than from my PA Ms Vicki Askin. Vicki has done a tremendous job and put in countless hours ensuring the night goes well, graduation rings are ordered and arrived, the graduation packs are complete and accurate. Her service and dedication to the boys of the College is outstanding and very much appreciated.

Arrangements for final day of school

This year the academic year concludes for students on Friday 27 November. For forward planning I outline below the order of the day:

Reminder to all boys and parents

Farewell

As this is my final newsletter article I would like to farewell the College community with great gratitude. While being Dean of Students, even in the most difficult of decisions, my priority and that of the Student Formation team is always centered on your son, his growth and his best interests, even if that sometimes means making a tough call.

There are many highlights and memories that will forever be in my heart. From grandstands to graduations where amazing things have happened, and young boys have transitioned to Signum Fidei gentlemen. Nudgee College has given me the opportunity to meet some incredible young men and their families, and I thank you for sharing yours and your son’s lives with us.

Finally to the amazing team of House Deans, Heads of Boarding Houses, administrative staff in the Student Office and Directors that have served and assisted me since 2008. I cannot thank this group of people enough for their tireless efforts in creating and sustaining the Nudgee College community. Their keenness to bring people together, make them feel welcome and nurture the spirit in the boys and their families has always been inspiring. They have truly lived each day following the message of Edmund Rice; “have courage, the good seed will grow in their hearts later on”. Their commitment and tenacity to challenge the boys to be the best that they can be and to think creatively about what their future may hold is a wonderful gift and a strength to be cherished. Live Jesus in your hearts. Forever!

Upgrade Pathways

Upgrading means doing something that will give you a better tertiary entrance score to help you gain entry into your preferred course, hopefully in the following year. Some of these pathways can be built into your current list of QTAC preferences (e.g. the ‘foot-in-the-door’ courses). QTAC has information on upgrading pathways at www.qtac.edu.au/applications/application-resources/upgrading-pathways.

 When choosing an upgrade pathway, you need to consider the following:

•• Does the university to which I wish to gain entry accept this pathway?

•• Will this pathway give me a good enough score to get into the course I want?

•• Will this pathway give me credit into the course in which I wish to gain entry?

•• Does this pathway match my learning style (i.e. will I be successful in it)?

•• How much does this pathway cost?

•• How long will this pathway take me to upgrade sufficiently to gain entry to the course I want?

•• Will this pathway give me the prerequisite subjects I need to gain entry to the course I want if I don’t already have them?

Visit pages 32 and 39 of the QTAC Guide for a list of preparatory, bridging and pathway programs.

New York University Abu Dhabi

Only two schools in Australia (which St Joseph’s Nudgee College was one) were invited to attend a professional development event for educators at New York University’s (NYU) Abu Dhabi campus last week, to learn more about the global opportunities provided by them. I learnt about NYU Abu Dhabi’s rigorous academics, cutting-edge undergraduate research opportunities, thriving student life, selective admissions process and alumni accomplishments. Throughout the weekend, I interacted with NYU Abu Dhabi faculty, visited the NYU Abu Dhabi campus and residence hall, and got a taste of the culture of the United Arab Emirates.

In addition I met with representatives from the NYU Abu Dhabi senior leadership team and current NYU Abu Dhabi students. This was also a chance to meet and network with fellow educators and counsellors from other top schools around the world.

The city of Abu Dhabi is fast becoming the next great idea capital and a centre for international learning and culture with campuses in New York, Abu Dhabi and Shanghai. No matter which of the three campuses a student chooses as an entry point into the global network, they will have the opportunity to study at NYU’s other campuses or global academic centres, including Accra, Ghana; Berlin, Germany; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Florence, Italy; London, England; Madrid, Spain; Paris, France; Prague, Czech Republic; Sydney, Australia; Tel Aviv, Israel; and Washington DC, United States.

NYU Abu Dhabi is quickly gaining a global reputation for its high-achieving students and an innovative liberal arts, science, and engineering curriculum, including a strong emphasis on undergraduate research and internships. With financial support available regardless of citizenship, the Abu Dhabi campus offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree programs in areas including the arts and humanities (such as film and new media, history, music, philosophy, and theatre), social sciences (such as economics, political science, and social research and public policy), and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (such as biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, and psychology).

St Joseph’s Nudgee College will be hosting an NYU Abu Dhabi forum in March, 2016, so that NYU Abu Dhabi can present course programs and scholarship opportunities to our students and parents. It will be a great opportunity for our students to think and act as global citizens.

Junior SchoolMr Chris CawleyDirector of Junior SchoolThis week we celebrated our final award winners of 2015. To receive the Principal’s Award students need to display persistence in their efforts to achieve to the best of their ability, act on an awareness of the strategies to produce their best work, demonstrate a consistent engagement in the subject and embrace every opportunity to improve their knowledge of the subject. The Macrossan Award is achieved by demonstrating the Habits of Minds; Persisting, Managing Impulsivity, and Taking Responsible Risks. We congratulate the following recipients for Semester 2:

As this is my final newsletter for 2015, I would like to thank and farewell a number of groups. To our parent body of the Junior School, I thank you for the positive way you have engaged with us to assist your son’s education throughout the year. On numerous occasions we have raised our concerns with you and you with us, on each occasion we have been able to work together to ensure a positive outcome for your son.

To the student body, well done on another great year. There have been so many highlights, and as I look at our television screen in the Junior School this week showing over 500 slides of what has occurred this year, I am amazed at how much has been accomplished. In general, our students have shown respect for one another, their teachers and the O’Neill precinct. I wish our Year 6 students all the best as they formally enter high school. Be assured we always keep an eye on your growth as you journey through Nudgee College. To those boys leaving the College, all the best for future years in whatever school you may be embarking upon in 2016.

To the many staff that make up our Junior School team, my sincerest gratitude. I repeat, as I have many times this year, that I am fortunate to lead such a committed group of professionals who always have your sons at the heart of every action and decision they take. We sadly farewell Mrs Kris Clancy and Ms Teisha Dunn who have been on contract this year. Their contribution to both the academic and co-curricular life of the College is very much appreciated. We wish both all the best in the future, and to Teisha who is moving with her family to the United Kingdom next year, safe travels. Ms Michelle Greive is the glue that bonds all facets of the Junior School together. Her communication with staff, parents and students is second to none. Thank you Michelle for all that you have done for me personally, but also the wider Junior School community.

As Mr Paul Begg leaves the College this year, my appreciation is extended for the role he has played in the Junior School. As Dean of Students Paul’s role, in conjunction with House Deans and myself, is the pastoral care and development of all students. Paul has always shown a keen interest in Years 5 and 6, and has been a great pillar of support for me personally. I thank Paul for his professional approach to his role through his many interactions with Junior School over the years, and wish him all the best in his new role of Head of Campus, at Southern Cross College.

I wish all families, staff and students a very happy and Holy Christmas season. I look forward to 2016 with great energy, to do it all again.

BoardingMr John CrossHead of Cotter Boarding HouseFarewell from next year’s boarding Seniors

This year’s Seniors were a talented group whose enthusiasm is something for future year levels to aspire to. Whether it was sports training or cheering, Big Brekky or Big BBQ, or their application to their studies; the class of 2015 always led from the front. Though leaving school, especially from a place as special as Nudgee College, is scary at the time, I’m sure they’ll learn to cope. After all there are only bigger and better things to look forward to in the world out there. Their absence will be felt and their presence will be missed. From myself and the rest of the boarding community - farewell and good luck to the 2015 Senior boarders.

Joe Herbert 2016 College Vice Captain

Senior Boarders Farewell Dinner

On Wednesday night we celebrated the journey of our graduating Senior boarders with a farewell dinner in Ryan Hall. An excellent meal, good humour, entertainment and plenty of memories were shared over the course of the evening. A special part of the night was the recognition of the Senior boarder of the year awards, which were presented to the following young men:

The O’Reilly Family Shield: Spirit of Nudgee Boarding, went to the following Murphy boarders:

• Callan Daley - a boarder since Year 8 who has been a consistent achiever academically over five years and involved in many College activities. Significant leadership shown as House Prefect and Senior boarding leader.

• Tom Nugent - started at Nudgee College in Year 6 and came to board in Year 11. Proxime accessit and outstanding contributor to College life. A role model for any Nudgee College boy.

The Spirit of Cotter went to Royden Skeet, whose dedication to study, sport, and social justice made him a role model for the younger members of Cotter Boarding House. Royden has proven to be a very loyal and reliable member of Cotter and was a deserving winner of this inaugural award.

The Treacy Shield for Leadership and Service was awarded to Hodda student Jack Donovan who was an excellent role model through events, such as leading the Great Wheelbarrow Race. He demonstrated consistency in leadership in the academic and sporting fields.

A special thanks must go to the House Mothers for their work in setting the hall up for such a memorable occasion.

Farewell Mr Bruce Barlow

Bruce has been a dedicated and long serving member of the Nudgee College boarding community, who is retiring at the end of this year. Everybody who knows Bruce will tell you about his incredible work ethic and dedication to those boys in his care. His popularity with the boys was clearly evident by the standing ovation he received at the Seniors’ final Assembly. Bruce will be greatly missed by the entire Nudgee College community and we wish him all the very best for the future.

End of Term Travel

As we approach the end of Term could you please discuss your son’s travel plans with him and ensure his vacation leave is approved in REACH by next Monday at the latest, so boarding staff can make arrangements for staffing, meals etc. Please include any specific details in the notes, such as flight details. Year 11s will be on exam block next week, and classes will conclude at 12.00pm on 27 November for Years 5 to 10. We will provide the usual buses to the airport on the last day of school.
