Confirmations & Receipts We do not automatically mail confirmations. Your receipt is your canceled check or credit card charge. Unless notified, classes will run as scheduled. If you would like a confirmation, please send a self-addressed, stamped envelope. If you register online, confirmations can be printed from our web page and saved as a receipt.

Class Cancellation (due to weather) Middletown: Whenever the Middletown Public Schools are closed due to bad weather, Adult Education classes do not meet. Listen to radio stations WTIC AM 1080, WMRD AM 1050, Channel 8 (WTNH), or Channel 30 (WVIT). Should snow or inclement weather develop during the day, class cancellations are announced by late afternoon. Canceled classes will be made up by adding an additional session. Cancellations will be listed on our website: www.maect.org.

SENIOR FEES Seniors (ages 62 and older) residing in certain towns are eligible to pay a special rate because of agreements with their Boards of Education. This reduced rate is called the SENIOR FEE. Seniors from the following towns are eligible for this special fee: Middletown, Cromwell, Durham, East Haddam, Middlefield, Moodus, Rockfall, East Hampton, Portland, Haddam, Higganum, Killingworth, Cobalt, Haddam Neck, Middle Haddam, Deep River, Chester, Essex, Ivoryton, and Centerbook. All other Senior Citizens pay the non-resident fee listed with the course description. Sorry, but there are no senior rates for bus trips.

Use paper and paint to create unique beauti-ful artwork. Learn how to layer paper, paint on your own paper, collage, using acrylic matte medium and cutting and tearing thus bringing to life the most wonderful scenes and abstracts. Create a beautiful unique painting of any subject from found papers, painted papers, newspapers, book pages, magazines and hand-made or machine milled paper. Beginning Acrylic PaintingPIERRE SYLVAIN

Explore painting techniques with exercises in specific fundamentals, using acrylics, with examples from art history. We will include realist painting, with observation of still life and landscape, and experiment with ex-pressive, abstract and imaginative styles. All levels welcome. Although appropriate for beginning painters with no previous experi-ence, this is not strictly a traditional begin-ning painting course. You will start painting right away with few preliminary exercises. Following is list of supplies you need to get before first class. You have learned the principles of drawing and now you can move on to COLOR. Explore through colored pencil drawing on tinted paper and move on to pastels (pure color pigment). Zentangle FOLLOWING CLASSES TAUGHT BE KELLEY KELLY CZT

What is Zentangle?Zentangle is relaxing and fun, and increases creativity and focus. It provides artistic satis-faction along with a personal sense of well be-ing. It benefits the experienced artist as well as the novice, and can be done by anyone. It is a way to create beautiful art images using repetitive patterns. The Zentangle motto is: Anything is possible one stroke at a time.

Intro. to ZentangleThis is a 2-class series for people just begin-ning to explore the world of Zentangle, a pattern based art form that has been com-pared to yoga and meditation. We’ll explore 4-5 basic tangles per class as well as the his-tory, theory, and benefits of Zentangle in a low-stress, welcoming environment. This hands-on photography basics tech-niques and practice class covers the use of any type of digital camera and related acces-sories. The following will be covered: how to take control of your camera, including us-ing flash, exposure composition, ISO, white balance, composition and lighting, so you can consistently achieve high quality photo-graphs as well as downloading, backing-up photos, basic image editing, printing and sharing photos. This course will introduce you to your com-puter using handouts and activities that teach you everyday computer skills. We will review the parts of a computer and many basic vo-cabulary terms which will help you as you learn to use Microsoft’s Windows OS. Step-by-step instructions have been designed to help you save, retrieve, edit and print files that you’ll create using popular Microsoft Office tools. Strategies are covered for working with your documents including storing, retrieving, printing and e-mailing. Felted ClutchDiscover the ancient art of wet felting with a modern twist by creating a glamorous evening clutch. In this workshop you will explore how to transform merino wool using a resist into a seamless pouch. In addition to wool, other fibers such as silk will be incorporated to create an intricate design on the surface of the clutch – a technique called nuno felting. Different options to finish your piece will be demon-strated, such as adding a handle and closure. If you have a glass wash board in your possession feel free to bring it to the class. Wooly Oven Mitt (wet felting workshop)This is a begin-ner friendly class. Explore the tech-nique of wet felt-ing and create a stylish oven mitt and unique design. You will learn how to use the technique of wet felting around resist to create a seamless hollow mitt shape. In addition, you will learn how to apply a de-sign using pre felt and other wool materials. Barbed needle will be available to needle felt the finishing touches onto your design. Wool is an ideal choice material for an oven mitt thanks to its properties such as flame resis-tance and natural temperature regulation as well as durability. Quilting 101:Building BlocksBY DEBBIE SIERPINSKI

In this class you will learn the introduction to the basics of machine quilting. Some sewing skills are helpful. There will be 3 easy patterns to choose from. You will learn how to choose the right fabric (color and designs) for your quilt. You will then rotary cut, strip piece and machine piece blocks together to complete the top portion of the quilt. Finally you will learn the finishing touches: adding borders, back-ing the quilt, machine quilting the three layers together, and adding binding. This is a hands on class, so when the class is completed, you will be a proud owner of a beautiful finished lap size quilt. There will also be projects for the intermediate and advanced quilters such as Bargello quilts or building complex blocks, which are fat quarter friendly.

The Metropolitan Opera (AIDA)

Enjoy the day at the Opera! All the ingredients for Grand Opera. Radames, a young Egyptian army officer is in love with AIDA, an Ethopian princess who is now the slave of Paraoh’s daugh-ter, Amneris. Unfortunately, Amneris is also in love with Radames, and when he is named to lead the Egyptian army into battle against the Ethiopians, it sets up a fatal conflict between love and duty. Opera runs about 3 and ¾ hrs. (There will be 2 intermissions). Tickets are for the Orchestra Rear. After the show you will spend time in the Lincoln Center area to grab a bite to eat before departing for home. There will be a brief coffee stop on the way to New York.

GED® (GENERAL EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT) STATE OF CONNECTICUT HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA This program prepares adult learners to pass the 4-part, computer-based GED® exam to earn a State of Connecticut High School diploma. Students receive instruction in each of four subject areas-science, social studies, math and language arts, plus basic computer skills to take the exam. Instructors will also review the official website, ged.com where students can access related exam information and exam registration procedures. Students must be at least 17 years old and officially withdrawn from school to enroll in the GED® preparation classes listed here. To be able to register for the GED® exam, students must be at least 17 years old and officially withdrawn from school for 6 months, and 17 year-olds must submit a withdrawal form with a parent or guardian signature. Individuals who are 18 years of age may submit, in lieu of a withdrawal form, a letter from their last high school that the class with which they entered ninth grade (or would have entered if never enrolled in high school) has already graduated. Students can begin the GED® registration process online at ged.com and complete the process in person at Middletown Adult Education, 398 Main Street, Middletown, CT.

The GED® preparation program is designed for people who have not completed their high school education. You can prepare to take the GED® exam through our free classes. If you are ready to earn your State of Connecticut High School

diploma through the GED® exam, call (860) 343-6048 to begin intake and registration today! You will not be able to combine your previous GED® scores from prior tests with the new GED® 2014 test.
