NBCF NEWSLETTER MAY 2018

NBCF NEWS NEW BRUNSWICK YOUTH CHOIR 2018 The 2018 New Brunswick Youth Choir was a weekend of matching high artistry with deep emotion. The 20 young singers explored Songs of Love and Death | Chansons d’amour et de mort as presented by composers ancient and contemporary, in idioms from folk music to Renaissance. The Université de Moncton cam-pus was a beautiful setting for the weekend, and the Département de musique were wel-coming and accommodating hosts for the singers. Conductor François Ouimet brought all of his curiosity, wisdom and creativity to bear over the weekend, encouraging the singers in their exploration of the theme and meaning of the music, in order to make it as deep and mean-ingful for themselves and for the audience as possible. Trois beaux oiseaux du paradis by Maurice Ravel was a particular treat. Ravel is not typical-ly known as a choral composer and he did not write a great deal of music for choir. The

singers seized this rare opportunity to explore this challenging and beautiful work. Another highlight was M. Ouimet’s arrangement of Ra-diohead’s Exit Music for a Film, a stark and powerful work drawn from the Romeo and Juliet story. Sadly, illness and other issues prevented sev-eral registered singers from attending. A very strong choir was formed even so—in part thanks to pianist Sébastien Leclerc helping out in the a cappella pieces.

The singers had high praise for Sébastien, who supported the singers all weekend with sensi-tivity and skill, and performed with flair in the concert on Sunday. Special kudos to him for helping fill out the bass section!

NBYC replies on the generous financial sup-port and volunteer efforts of many choirs, insti-tutions and individuals, the many voice teach-ers and choir directors who take the time and effort to recommend and coach their singers,
