Natural Disasters –
What We Learnt From It !
INTRODUCTION
Disasters happen in a fallen world, and we can’t do anything to prevent them.
In 2011 there was the deadly tsunami in Japan that triggered the meltdown of a nuclear reactor.
Theoretically it is the consequences of the combination of a natural hazard such as volcanic eruptions, typhoons, earth quake, tsunami including the flood what we experienced a severe damage in our district a few weeks back and also due to human activities.
Natural Disasters?
Volcanic eruption

Natural Disasters?
“Simply anything that causes damages to the livelihood and the nature takes whole responsibility for that.”
Vulnerability of Today’s Mankind:Today more people
than ever are vulnerable to natural disasters.
Global climate change now threatens to increase these number significantly in the 21st Century.
EVERY CAUSE HAS AN EFFECT
Our attitude towards Mother Nature will determine Mother Nature’s attitude towards us.
For every cause there is an effect. Nature treats the same way we are treating her.
We can’t force things, we can’t force nature and we can’t force anything in life, we only THINK we can.
NON RESISTANCE
When disasters like the Sandy storm happen, we are taught a very important life lesson, and that is to let go of our expectations.
LET GO OF EXPECTATIONS
Let go of expectations and live the life you’re destined for.
Peace comes only when we are true to our soul’s nature.
FORGIVE AND FORGET
Forgive everyone and forget all their faults because there is more to life that.
The only way out of the labyrinth of suffering is to forgive.
You can’t resist and you can’t fight against the forces of nature, you can only pray and wait for the storm to pass, patiently.
PATIENCE
Do you have the patience to wait till your mud settles and the water is clear? Can you remain unmoving till the right action arises by itself?
LOVE & COMPASSION
Whether you are directly involved and affected by a natural disaster or not, whether is storm Sandy or some other natural disaster, you can’t help but feel compassionate towards every living being affected by the fury ofMother Nature, realizing once again that we are all ONE.
Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries.Without them humanity cannot survive. - Dalai lama
Nothing is ours to keep, not our big and expensive villas, not our beautiful and luxurious cars, not thelives of our families and friends and not our own lives.
LET GO OF ATTACHMENTS
In life, there’s many things that we have to learn to let go.We have to let go of situations, things, memories, people and even ourselves.
BUILD YOUR CASTLES IN THE SKY
If you built castles in the sky ; your
work need not be lost ;
that is where they should
be.
Now put the foundations under them.
If you built castles in the sky ; your work need not be lost ; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.
WE ARE ALL EQUAL
Storm Sandy and all the world’s natural disasters don’t just hit and affect those who are poor, but thosewho are wealthy as well
One love, one heart, one destiny.
WHAT REALLY MATTERS IN LIFE
It’s not about the money, it’s not about the looks, it’s not about the many things we think it is.
What really matters in life is to love yourself, love those around you and to allow them to love you back.
Planet Earth is our home, not just yours and not just mine.
Pre-Historical Disasters :
A volcanic eruption on Toba 74,000 years ago left the Earth in a volcanic winter that lasted 6-10 years.
This created a genetic bottleneck because there was only between 1,000 and 10,000 people left on
Earth and the event made us who we are today.
38,000 years ago a giant volcano in the Vesuvius region erupted, forcing the first European Homo
Pre-Historical Disasters :
8,200 years ago the entire Western coast of Jutland in Denmark was transformed by a giant tsunami
that flooded large parts of Scotland.
In 1883 Krakatau blew up with a force equivalent to 13,000 Hiroshima bombs.
All of these events had societal consequences that can be traced in archaeological and historical
sources.
THE HUMANITIES MAKE NATURAL DISASTERS MORE TANGIBLE
Climate reports and disaster reports describe in great detail how various factors are intertwined scientifically but they often don't give evidence-based descriptions of what it will all mean for the affected societies.
“PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE”
Now at this time I remember once a statement said by Benjamin Franklin and that’s “Death and taxesare the only two certainties in life, he neglected to add natural catastrophes to the list”.
