adapting the watchstanding schedule to the actual activity (with shifts from one half to one third, to one quarter…)

giving « Sunday » day at sea (only « on duty » work)

avoiding specific tasks (helicopter, refueling…) during resting periods

maintaining good mood

Le 6 juin 1971, à 4h00 du matin, le Surcouf alors qu'il naviguait en escadre est abordé par le pétrolier sovietique Général

Boucharov au large de Carthagène, collision ou la responsabilité du Surcouf était entière…

Bernard P. A.(64 ans, Lieutenant de vaisseau)

Quelques précisions : le Surcouf a été abordé le 6-6-1971 à 0409(LT) par le pétrolier soviétique Général Boucharov à 60 milles au Sud de Carthagène (Espagne). L'avant à coulé 4 heures après l'abordage, ce qui à permis à l'équipage de se sauver sans mal (9 disparus et un blessé grave décédé plus tard). L'étrave du pétrolier est entrée profondément dans le Surcouf, lui cassant la quille (ce qui ne pardonne pas). L'avant ne tenant que par le bordé babord et frétillant gentiment à chaque coup de roulis. Heureusement il faisait un temps de curé, car autrement cela aurait été autrement plus grave .Le mat avant à tenu bon, mais il a été coupé à Carthagène pour plus de sécurité. Effectivement, l'étrave du pétrolier à frôlé les 2 chaudières avant sans les toucher, un vrai miracle, car autrement c'était l'explosion..Je l'ai vu rentrer à Toulon le 2-7-1971 vers 2230 à Toulon, puis par la suite je suis allé le voir au

bassin. Très impressionnant.....

D'après ce que je me souviens du rapport d'accident, c'est que le chef de quart dormait à la passerelle, parce qu'il avait passé sa journée dans différent exercices.

Bien sur il n'était pas seul à faire le quart, mais aucun garde fou n'a fonctionné.

One of the main reason is probably because there is many levels of control

in both operational and maintenance activities

…one of the main chalenge of crew reduction…
