The collection alsocontains papers from a wide variety of other American Indian organizations.

Historical Note
Native American Educational Service (NAES) was established in 1974 as a post-secondaryeducation program for American Indian students through a bi-lateral agreement with AntiochCollege. NAES aimed to cultivate leaders for Native American communities to ensure that tribalknowledge, traditions, and values were present in the higher education of Native students.
NAES became a candidate for accreditation in 1978 and was fully accredited in 1984under authorization of the State of Illinois Board of Higher Education, the MinnesotaHigher Education Coordinating Board, the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes, andthe Menominee Nation. The school offered coursework leading to the Bachelor of Arts inCommunity Studies, which focused on Native American tribal and community knowledge,community development, and community leadership. The main NAES campus was located

in Chicago, IL and there were permanent study sites in Minneapolis, MN, on the MenomineeReservation (WI), and on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation and Fort Peck Reservation (MT).
NAES’ Chicago campus ceased operation in 2007. The collection contains papers found in theNAES library archives, including papers from other American Indian organizations.
Scope Note
This collection is organized into five series.
Series I contains papers related to the Native American Educational Service and its variouscampuses. The series is divided into six subseries.
Series II contains papers related to the American Indian Center of Chicago. The series is dividedinto five subseries.
Series III contains papers from the NAES archives related to other American Indianorganizations. These organizations include the American Indian Business Association, theAmerican Indian Council of Illinois, the American Indian Economic Development Association,American Indian Health Service, the Anawim Center, the California Indian ManpowerConsortium, Inc., Chicago’s Native American Urban Indian Retreat, the Indian Council Fire,the Indian Treaty Rights Committee, the Native American Committee, Inc., and additionalorganizations. This series is divided into 11 subseries.
Series IV contains oversize material such as NAES event posters and artwork.
Series V contains three restricted folders with evaluative, medical, and financial information.

Series I: Native American Educational Service

Series I is divided into six subseries.
Subseries 1 contains administrative material pertaining to NAES. This material includes reports,minutes, notes, self-studies, organizational charts, histories, handbooks, and directories.
Subseries 2 contains material pertaining to classes and education, events, and conferences.The subseries contains papers related to the NAES Chicago campus, Twin Cities campus, andFt. Peck campus. This material contains college catalogs, course listings, course syllabi, eventcalendars, conference materials, and speeches. The subseries also includes material concerningan NAES partnership with Korean American Educational Service (KAES). This collectioncontains papers related to the operation of the Chicago Campus of NAES College. These includethe campus bookstore’s financial reports and staff records as well as Chicago Campus coursematerials and class schedules.
Subseries 3 contains correspondence. The correspondence in this subseries spans from the years1983-2000.
Subseries 4 contains financial documents. The material in this subseries includes budgets, grantannouncements, tax papers, and other fiscal statements.
Subseries 5 contains NAES-related articles and promotional material. The subseries containsphotos, brochures, flyers, news clippings, and an NAES t-shirt.
Subseries 6 contains a collection of publications by an assortment of American Indianorganizations. The collection includes informational newsletters, pamphlets, and more formalperiodicals.

Series II: American Indian Center
Series II contains papers from the American Indian Center of Chicago (AIC). The AIC wasfounded in 1953 and remains the oldest urban-based Native membership community center inthe United States. The AIC was formed to serve the needs of Chicago’s urban American Indiancommunity following the relocation of reservation communities to the city under the IndianRelocation program of the 1950s.The series contains material related to the founding of the AICand its development, struggles, and success as a cultural and community resource for Chicago’sAmerican Indian community. The series is divided into five subseries.

Subseries 1 contains administrative material pertaining to the AIC. The subseries includes reportsand minutes from the AIC Board of Directors and various AIC committees. The subseries alsocontains histories of the center and its by-laws.
Subseries 2 contains papers and records pertaining to AIC events. The subseries containscalendars and records of events and activities that the AIC hosted during the 1950s as well asmore recent records. Much of this material relates to the planning and promotion of an annualAIC powwow.
Subseries 3 contains correspondence. The correspondence in this subseries spans from yearspreceding the AIC’s founding through 1993.
Subseries 4 contains financial documents. The material in this subseries includes budgets, grantproposals, extensive audit reports, and other fiscal records.
Subseries 5 contains AIC-related articles and promotional material. The subseries contains anAIC coloring book, clip art, photos, posters, flyers, and many news clippings.

Series III: Related Organizations
Series III contains material from the NAES library archives that originated with other AmericanIndian organizations. The series is divided into 11 subseries.
Subseries 1 contains material from the American Indian Business Association (AIBA). The AIBAwas organized as a consortium of ten Illinois American Indian organizations with a purpose ofproviding integrated training and employment for American Indians in Illinois and Indiana.This subseries contains training material, financial reports, administrative material, and alsomaterial related to Department of Labor audits and sanctions.
Subseries 2 contains material from the American Indian Council of Illinois (AICI). The AICIwas founded in 1995 as a representative council of American Indian communities for thepurpose of promoting the political and social well-being of American Indian communities inIllinois through advocacy for inclusion, representation, and non-discrimination. Subseries 3contains various administrative and promotional material.
Subseries 3 contains material from the American Indian Economic Development Association(AIEDA). AIEDA was incorporated in 1985 in order to increase the self-sufficiency of theChicago American Indian community through job creation, improvement of job programs,increased access to credit, and the establishment of a system of economic developmentcompatible and consistent with the American Indian culture and community. The subseriescontains correspondence, financial material, articles, and flyers.
Subseries 4 contains material from the American Indian Health Service (AIHS). AIHS was anonprofit community health center organized in 1974. It was designed to meet the health careneeds of Native Americans in Chicago by providing health services with an emphasis on familyoriented care for patients of all ages. The subseries contains correspondence, administrativematerial, promotional materials, handbooks, and manuals.
Subseries 5 contains material from the Anawim Center. Founded in the early 1980s, the AnawimCenter was a spiritual center that combined Native American and Catholic spirituality. TheCatholic Archdiocese of Chicago began sponsoring the organization in 1987. The subseriescontains correspondence, event calendars and flyers, articles, and newsletters.
Subseries 6 contains material from the California Indian Manpower Consortium, Inc.(CIMC). The CIMC was created in 1978 as a nonprofit corporation with an aim to promotethe educational and economic advancement of American Indians. The primary purpose ofthe consortium is to offer training, employment, and other activities designed to meet theemployment and training needs of its client population and to build economically self-sufficientAmerican Indian communities in rural, reservation, and urban areas. The subseries containsadministrative material, training handbooks, and promotional flyers.
Subseries 7 contains material from Chicago’s Native American Urban Indian Retreat(CNAUIR). CNAUIR was founded as a spiritually-based, nonprofit organization in August,1994 with a mission to empower Urban Indians in Chicago to maintain their spiritual and

cultural identities, inter-tribal diversity, and communal lifestyle through education, spiritual andcommunity gatherings, and cultural events. This subseries contains material pertaining to classeson positive Indian parenting and storytelling, A.A. meetings, GED tutoring, talking circles, andmonthly potluck dinners. The founders of CNAUIR include members of Chicago’s inter-tribalcommunity. CNAUIR did not maintain a membership and raised money through governmentgrants, church assistance, private assistance, corporate foundation grants, and communityfundraising events. The subseries contains reports, newsletters, and various promotionalmaterials.
Subseries 8 contains material from the Indian Council Fire (ICF). Since 1933 the ICF haspresented the prestigious annual Indian Achievement Award to American Indian luminariessuch as Charles Eastman (1933), Henry Roe Cloud (1935), Ella C. Deloria (1945), EvelynYellowrobe Finkbeiner (1947),Vine Deloria Sr. (1954), Ben Reifel (1960), Vine Deloria, Jr.(1972), Juan de Jesus Romero (1974), Alfonso Ortiz (1982), Ada Deer (1984), John Echohawk(1987), and Wilma Mankiller (1988). The subseries contains biographical informational ofawardees and nominees, speeches and programs from award dinners, papers pertaining to thevoting and judging process, correspondence, publications, and administrative material.
Subseries 9 contains material from the Indian Treaty Rights Committee (ITRC). The ITRCworked to inform law and policy makers, organize within the Chicago Indian community, act asa liaison between the American Indian community and church and government bodies, and toeducate the general public, including religious communities, regarding legal, social, and historicalissues of American Indians. The ITRC was organized in 1987 by the Midwest Regional RacialJustice Working Group of the ecumenical National Council of Churches. The subseries containscorrespondence, administrative and promotional material, and documents concerning AmericanIndian advocacy in the states of Arizona, Illinois, Washington, and Wisconsin.
Subseries 10 contains material from the Native American Committee, Inc. (NAC). NAC wasincorporated in 1970 as a support group for American Indian rights actions throughout thenation. As a community-based and community-controlled not-for-profit, NAC supportedprograms that promoted the economic, social, cultural, and educational growth of AmericanIndian people. The subseries contains correspondence, administrative and promotional material,financial documents, and conference papers.
