The Workshop The purpose of the Workshop is to familiarize the participants with the Koha open source Integrated Library System (ILS) developed in 1999 by Katipo Communications, New Zealand. Koha is considered as a highly sophisticated web-based ILS, with a SQL database backend and accessible via Z39.50 or SRU. The user interface is very configurable and adaptable and has been translated into many languages. Koha has most of the features that would be expected in an ILS, including:

Web 2.0 facilities like tagging, comment, Social sharing and RSS feeds Union catalogue facility Customizable search Circulation and borrower management Full acquisitions system including budgets and pricing information Ability to cope with any number of branches, patrons, patron

categories, item categories, items, currencies and other data Reading lists for members UNICODE and library standards compliant Export/import and backup/restoration facilities

Objectives

To introduce the Linux operating system to the participants. To acquaint the participants with the installation of Koha on

server class machines. To provide extensive hands-on-training to the participants so as to

enable them to work independently. To equip the participants for managing Koha at institutions with

large collections Target Audience The Workshop will be of immense benefit to LIS professionals working in any type of library. The number of participants is restricted to 30 and admission will be strictly on a first-come-first-served basis. Extensive practical sessions/hands-on-training, enriched with interactive sessions will be the hallmark of the Workshop. Workshop Faculty The Workshop will be handled by experts with extensive practical experience in Linux and Koha. Registration The Workshop is designed with two courses. In the three-day first course hands-on-sessions on Koha Basic will be provided. In the two-day second course hands-on-sessions on Koha Advanced will be provided. The participants can register for both the courses or they can register any one of them. The registration fee is as follows:

The fee covers the cost of workshop kit, course materials, lunch and tea. The fee should be paid in the form of Demand Draft or local Cheque drawn in favour of the President / Secretary, Kerala Library Association Kozhikode Region, Department of Library and Information Science, University of Calicut, Calicut University P.O., PIN-673 535, Kerala. The participants can also pay the fee directly to the State Bank of Travancore Calicut University Branch (70200) Account No: 67271887878. Please note that the bank transmission fees have to be paid by the transmitter. Accommodation Accommodation can be arranged for the participants in the University Guest House with usual amenities on first come first serve basis. Room rent and other charges are to be paid by the participants directly. Besides accommodation in the Guest House, Hotels can also be arranged for the participants on request and confirmation.

Venue of the Workshop The Workshop will be held at the INFONET Centre of the C.H.M.K Library situated on the main campus of the University of Calicut. The campus is at Thenhipalam, a hilly village surrounded by green valleys. It is 23 kilometers south of Calicut, the capital city of erstwhile Zamorins, 12 kilometers from Karipur airport and 14 kilometers from Parappanangadi Railway Station. Calicut city is well connected with buses and trains from various parts of the country. After Workshop Technical Support The Kerala Library Association Kozhikode Region will be pleased to offer the technical support to libraries after the workshop for installation, maintenance, database migration, etc. You are welcome to write to us for details. Application The Application should be made in the format given along with this brochure. Detailed brochure and copies of the application can also be downloaded from the Calicut University website http://www.universityofcalicut.info/. The filled up application along with the DD/Cheque should reach to the Organizing Secretary on or before 10th May 2014.
