Most Considerate Site

Sainsbury’s BallymenaPresented to: The Site TeamContractor: McLaughlin & Harvey LtdClient: Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Ltd

Located in a busy retail park, this projectcalled for the refurbishment of aSainsbury’s supermarket which remainedoperational throughout the shortconstruction period.

Exceptional innovation, responsiveness tochallenge and constant attention to detailwere the hallmarks of the managementapproach. An MSc student was retained tostudy "virtual water" in constructionmaterial production to promotesustainability more widely. The impressiveresults will be used UK-wide by the clientand made available to other constructioncompanies. A further unique initiativeinvolved specially-developed ‘low carbon’

hoarding, which was both practical andattractive, and had less environmentalimpact from its production and placement.

First-class welfare facilities werecomplemented by a smoking cessationclub and operatives and staff wereincentivised in considerate performance.The team took part in leg waxing inpublic, in-store bag packing for ComicRelief and a celebrity chef healthy eatingcookery demonstration was held on site.Community initiatives included theproduction of a free, colourful‘Community Calendar’ containing photosof considerate initiatives, local bird-lifeenhancement, displays in the nearby Ecos centre and practical involvement inlocal schools and colleges.

With top scores across the spectrum ofconsiderate practices, the Scheme’sMonitor commented:

2012National Site AwardsThe National Site Awards recognisethe exceptional measures thatsites registered with theConsiderate Constructors Schemehave put in place to be moreconsiderate towards their localneighbourhoods, the public, their workforce and theenvironment. This year, over3000 guests attended 11 awardceremonies held across the UK where over 690 awards werepresented to the highest scoringregistered sites that completed in 2011.

The Scheme presented 371 Bronze, 232 Silver and 88 Gold Awards, with one GoldAward winning site given thecoveted title of UK’s MostConsiderate Site 2012 and afurther 20 Gold Award winningsites named as Most ConsiderateSite Runners-up.

From over 8500 eligible sites, onlythe highest scoring 7.5% werepresented with National SiteAwards. Registered sites aremonitored and scored on theirlevel of consideration by theScheme, and an independentpanel reviews all eligible sites todecide whether it has reachedthe standard required to win anaward and what level of award itshould receive.

It is only right that those who consider the impact onthe community and environment surrounding theirconstruction site, and go the extra mile to mitigateany impact, are recognised. The CCS awards set ahigh benchmark and really serve to encourage bestpractice across the industry. This year’s winners notonly get crowned the most considerate UK sites for2012, but importantly play a huge role in improvingthe image of the construction industry as a whole.

The National Site Awardsrecognise the considerable work undertaken by thecompanies and their staff and the fact that teamscome back year after year is testament to theirappetite for what the CCS stands for and thecollective commitment to showing the best face of the construction industry.
