The mission of Citizen Corps is to harness the power of every individual through education, training, and volunteer service to make communities safer, stronger, and better prepared to respond to the threats of terrorism, crime, public health issues, and disasters of all kinds.

Citizen Corps Councils

Responsibilities

• Build on community strengths to develop action plans to involve the whole community, including special needs groups

• Focus on public education, training, and volunteer opportunities for community and family safety

• Promote and oversee Citizen Corps programs

• Provide opportunities for special skills and interests

• Organize special projects/community events

• Capture smart practices and report accomplishments

• Strengthen Partnerships/Relationships within the Community

• Works to Prepare Citizens for All Hazards

• Activity to keep NW Groups Active/Involved

• Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) www.policevolunteers.org

• Community Emergency Response Training www.citizencorps.gov/cert

Volunteers in Police Service and Neighborhood Watch

• Volunteers can assist with NW program development for Law Enforcement Agencies– Conduct Presentations – Attend group meetings

• VIPS volunteer can be:– NW Coordinator– NW Block Caption

&

• Assist with training opportunities and work to recruit members.

• Explore opportunities with your local Fire Safety Campaign.

• Use of Facility for Community Meetings

&

• NW groups can be used to identify resources and members for MRC’s.

• MRC’s provided medical and public health resources to communities.

• Assist in community trainings such as First Aid.

CERT & Neighborhood Watch

• Strengthen Partnerships/Relationships• Prepare citizens for Disaster through

training• Activity to keep NW Groups Active

– CERT exercises supplement Watch meetings

• Builds Skills for Members
