National History Day Santa Clara National History Day (NHD) makes history come alive for students in grades 4 through 12 by engaging them in the discovery of the experiences of the past. NHD transforms teaching through project-based learning that is tied to the new History-Social Science Framework and Common Core State Standards. After selecting a topic that relates to an annual theme, students conduct extensive research by using libraries, archives, museums, and oral history interviews. Through historical inquiry, they analyze and interpret their findings, draw conclusions about their topics’ significance in history, and create final projects to present their work by creating a(n) exhibit, documentary, website, historical paper, performance, or poster. Students Benefit from NHD: • Cultivate Interest: Students have voice and choice when selecting a research topic and connecting it to the annual theme. • Develop Research Skills: Students work with primary sources to build historical context, as well as analyze and synthesize their conclusions. • Become Experts: Students connect with real world audiences through research, interviews, and competitions. Steps to implement NHD in your classroom or school: • Determine how your school will participate. Will it be a classroom assignment, extra-curricular activity, or a combination of the two? • Recruit other teachers at your school to join in. • Come up with a timeline and set student project deadlines. Go to www.nhdca.org/toolkit to view timelines and support materials. • Attend professional development to learn more about NHD. • Introduce NHD and the theme to your students and assist them in picking topics. • Assist students in researching and building their projects. • Register your school by emailing [email protected] • Consider having a school or district contest/showcase. • Provide feedback to students on how they can improve their projects. • Help students register for the county competition.
