“Thinking about different forms of government, which of the following statements do you agree with most?”
S O C I A L I S M H E A D TO H E A D
Some people say free market capitalism is the best form of government. They say that it’s not the government’s
job to pick winners and losers and that government intervention only leads to inefficiency. They say that
capitalism produces the greatest amount of personal and economic freedom for every individual and is ultimately results in the best economic outcome for society, even if
some people are left behind because they can’t compete.
Other people say that socialism is the best form of government. They say that corporations have too much
control and that the capitalist system is set up to favor the rich and powerful. They say that the only way to police
corporations and protect the citizens is for the government to take a larger role in managing the
economy to make sure that every individual has equal access to basic necessities and public goods, even if that means that some people have to transfer their wealth to
others.

As you may have heard, there are some in Congress who have proposed drastically changing the healthcare system
in this country to ensure that everyone, regardless of income, has the same access to healthcare. They suggest
doing away with private practices, private hospitals and private insurance plans and instead replacing them with a
government run system that would be funded through federal and state tax dollars. Would you favor or oppose
changing the current healthcare system to a government run system?

“Please tell me if you agree or disagree with the following statement. Most of the media in our country is controlled by corporations who
are more interested in profits than telling the truth. Before a corporate owned media entity covers a campus rally for racial
equality, they should first prove that they are not biased against the content of the rally.”

+43The Federal government should tax the rich and spread the
wealth around as it is good for everybody.
6127 +34Obamacare did not go far enough and we should now progress to the next step and create a single-payer healthcare system similar
to Canada and countries in Europe.
5629 +27The Federal government, not the private sector, is best equipped to run, regulate, and innovate the economy in order to help every
American and not just the rich and powerful.
5631 +25Government is more capable of managing certain industries and
sectors of the economy than private corporations.

5835 +23We should make tuition at public universities and colleges free for all students and will pay for it by raising taxes on private
investments.
5536 +19Colleges and universities should protect students from harmful language on campus.
5235 +17In some cases the government should take control of certain
industries such as airlines or health care to better manage them because they are too important to our whole society to leave up
the private businesses.
