It’s the second straight weekend the No. 1 team in the nation lost to the No. 3 team in NCHC play after DU swept then-No. 1 St. Cloud State last weekend. The Pioneers already now have three losses in conference play, matching their season total from last year when they won the Penrose Cup as NCHC regular-season champions. No. 15/14 Western Michigan improved to 6-1-1 at home this season with a 4-1 win over Omaha. The Broncos’ six home wins this season tie for second most in the country. The loss was Omaha’s first in a series opener this year, entering the game 4-0-0 in series openers this season. The Mavericks are 0-3-1 in series finales this season. Junior forward Colt Conrad scored the game-winning goal, giving him a team-leading eight goals on the season. He has a goal in eight of his 12 games this year, while his eight goals tie for eighth nationally. Sophomore forward Dawson DiPietro, who played in only one game last season and did not score a goal, also tallied Friday, giving him six goals this season. No. 12/14 Minnesota Duluth used two late goals to earn a 3-1 win at Miami. Senior forward Jared Thomas tallied two goals, including the game-winner, for his second career multi-goal game. His other multi-goal outing came back as a freshman on Oct. 18, 2014 at Minnesota State. Despite the loss, Miami outshot UMD, 29-19, marking only the second time this season the Bulldogs were outshot, with the 19 shots their fewest this season (was 28 shots Nov. 3 at St. Cloud State). No. 2/2 St. Cloud State put up a season-high-tying six goals in a 6-1 win over Colorado College (also Oct. 13 vs. Alaska) to stay perfect at home this year (7-0-0). The Huskies have scored five or more goals in six of 10 games this season and lead the country averaging 4.20 goals per game. Denver is second nationally, putting up 4.18 gpg. Freshman forward Easton Brodzinski scored the game’s first goal and added an assist for his first career multi-point game after entering the contest with only one point all season (a goal Nov. 3 vs. Minnesota Duluth). UND junior defenseman Christian Wolanin was the lone Fighting Hawk to record multiple points Friday with a goal and an assist in the win. His 12 points this year rank second among NCHC blue liners. Friday’s recaps

While three National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) teams limited their opponent to only one goal on Friday, the

top-3 tilt between No. 1/1 Denver and No. 3/3 North Dakota lived up to the hype as the teams combined for nine goals. UND erased a3-0deficitandusedalatethird-periodgoaltostuntop-rankedDenver, 5-4, at Magness Arena. Also earning a road win thanks to late goals was No. 14/15 Minnesota Duluth, which struck twice inthefinalsixminutesFridaytobreaka1-1tieandtopMiami,3-1 in Oxford. No. 15/14 Western Michigan jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead and never looked back, while nearly pitching a second straightshutoutina4-1winoverOmahatoremaininfirstplacein the NCHC. Second-ranked St. Cloud State also cruised to a win, thumping Colorado College, 6-1, to remain perfect at home this season.

In another thrilling battle between No. 1/1 Denver and No. 3/3 North Dakota, UND got the better of the Pioneers, erasing a three-goaldeficittopickupa5-4winFridayatMagnessArena.Denver (6-3-2, 2-3-0-0 NCHC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead using a power play goal and a short-handed goal, before UND (8-2-3, 3-1-1-1 NCHC) struck twice in less than two minutes late in the second period to bring the Fighting Hawks within one at 3-2. UND then grabbed the lead when sophomore defenseman Colton Poolman and junior blue liner Christian Wolanin, who set up Poolman’s marker, scored within 1:10 of each other, the latter coming on the powerplay.JuniorforwardTroyTerry,whoalsohadanassistinthe loss, answered with a power play goal of his own for DU to tie the game again at 4-4. But with 2:31 remaining, senior forward JohnnySimonsonredirectedashotfromthepointintothenetforthegame-winner.UNDfinishedwitha36-34edgeinshotsongoal,including24-13overthefinal40minutes.Thelong-timerivals wrap up their series Saturday at 7:05 p.m. MT.

Nearly recording a second straight shutout, No. 15/14 Western Michigan had to settle for a 4-1 win over Omaha Friday night at Lawson Ice Arena. The Broncos (7-4-1, 4-1-0-0 NCHC) stayed atoptheNCHCstandingswiththewin,strikingtwiceinthefirstframe,thefirstonthepowerplayandtheeventualgame-winnerfrom junior forward Colt Conrad, who netted his team-leading eighth tally of the year. WMU then tacked on one more marker each frame to grab a 4-0 lead, including one from sophomore for-wardHughMcGing,whoalsoassistedonthefirstgoalforatwo-point night. The Mavericks (4-4-1, 1-2-0-0 NCHC) broke up the shutout with 52 seconds remaining in the contest, after sophomore goalie Ben Blacker logged a shutout at Minnesota Duluth last Sat-urday.Blackerfinishedwith24savesinthewinasWMUoutshotOmaha, 33-25. The two teams wrap up their NCHC series Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. ET.

After being swept last weekend, No. 2/2 St. Cloud State wasted little time bouncing back, jumping out to a 3-0 first-periodleadandrollingtoa6-1win over Colorado College Friday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Six different Huskies scored a goal with freshman forward Easton Brodzinski opening the scoring 6:45 intothegame.JuniordefensemanWill

Borgen doubled the lead with the eventual game-winning goal sev-en minutes later, while both added assists, as well, for two-point nights.JuniorforwardRobbyJacksonmadeit5-0nothinginthefirstminuteofthefinalframe,beforetheTigers(7-6-0,3-4-0-0NCHC) broke up the shutout on the power play. SCSU outshot CC, 46-22,inthewin,whilejuniorJeffSmithmade21savesinthewin for the Huskies. The two teams complete their series Saturday at 7:07 p.m. CT.

Using a pair of late third-period goals, No. 14/15 Minnesota Du-luth broke a tie and pulled away for a 3-1 win at Miami Friday at Steve Cady Arena. The Bulldogs (6-5-2, 2-3-0-0 NCHC) struck twiceinthefinal5:09ofthethirdperiod,withseniorforwardJaredThomasscoringthegame-winneronthepowerplayforhissecondgoalofthenightandfirsttwogoalsoftheseason.Hisfirstgoalopenedthegame’sscoringinthefirstframe.Miami(4-6-1, 1-3-1-0 NCHC) tied the game early in the third period on the man advantage off the stick of sophomore forward Carson Meyer. Freshman defenseman Scott Perunovich capped the scoring with a blastfromthepointfortheBulldogs.TheRedHawksoutshotUMD,29-19, but sophomore goalie Hunter Shepard made 28 saves to earn the win in net. The two sides complete their series Saturday at 7:05 p.m. ET.
