President's Message

It was with a great deal of pride that. I. accepted. the.Bronze.AAA.Award of Excellence at the State Convention on behalf of our association. Once again, the hard work of our board- members, of our committee chairs, and all our members did not go unnoticed. Thank you all for your hard work, dedication and continued involvement this past year. It goes without saying that this would not have been possible with out any of you. We should also be proud of the fact that our local association had the highest per capita contribution to IFAPAC in the state ($170.00 per member) great job to all of you who contributed, specially, David Ion our PAC Chair. I would like to give a special THANKS to Kendra Kimlinger, our Immediate Past-President, who not only did a terrific job as our Program Chair this past year, but was always available to answer any and all of the many questions that I had about NAIFA. In addition to lining up our speakers, she also coordinated and planned the terrific Table Topics and CE Classes we alternated before each meeting. Thanks also to Rick Ireland, Connie Framberger, Adi Ringer and Mike Ables for being the “old guard” (more than 10 years of NAIFA experience each as well as all being past presidents) and providing invaluable experience and guidance. Thanks to Melinda Monteen for keeping our finances in order, To Frank Burrola for doing a great job with our Corporate Sponsors and for stepping up to the plate as President next year. Thanks To Jim Marshall for heading up the YAT, to Ralph Weber for his involvement with AHIA, Pam Ables for keeping us informed on legislative matters, Christine Jennings for making sure we always had a place to meet and to Martha Wilson and her call team for making sure we had people at the meetings. Thanks also to Jack Smith, not only for doing our awards this year but for the wonderful talk he gave at out May general meeting. Last, but definitely not least, I want to give thanks to Audrey Rollings for the excellent job she did as the Administrative Assistant for most of the year and to Monique Chenault for not only coming to our rescue at the last minute, but for doing so with such competence and professionalism. Thank you all!

As the summer approaches, the issue of healthcare and the uninsured has been getting increasing scrutiny. The media has been playing up the 16.4% that are uninsured “at any point during the year”, while ignoring the US Census Bureau statistics which indicate that 99.07% of Americans were insured during the year. The proponents of mandatory healthcare and the proponents of government run healthcare both point at their desire to cover all, including undocumented aliens.

Unfortunately most people have misdiagnosed the problem. The fact is that the uninsured generally have lower medical costs per capita than the insured do, and many of them are uninsured because they feel the premiums are too high.

This is where you, the trusted advisor, comes in. It’s your job to find a benefit package that fits the need of the client and helps them keep expenses within what they feel is a value-adding cost. There are many ways to do this using H.S.A’s, HRA’s stacked plans etc. Know your client, know the market.

Another thing to watch for is the movie “Sicko”. I have not seen the movie, but it is sure to be full of misrepresentations. Arming yourself with the true facts will allow you to answer your clients questions. Regina Hertzinger has just published a new book with has gotten good reviews, and Dave Racer and Greg Datillo have recently published a book called “Fact not fiction” which sells for only $1 a piece when you buy 25 copies. I have a small supply, or you can go to www.AHIA.net and.order.them.online.

The Single Payer bill, SB 840 is also making the rounds again. There is a campaign by its supporters to lobby Senator Abe Maldanado to support the bill. Abe is OUR Senator and he supports HSA’s and free market solutions, but he needs to hear from you. Please take a minute, go to www.NAIFACC.org and click on the local representatives link and write him a letter urging him to vote against it.

It’s Time To Support Your PACOur April meeting is also our local PAC meeting. You will receive phone calls and messages this month encouraging you to either contribute to the PAC or to raise your level of contributions. Please take the few minutes to talk with and help our association.

Your PAC Benefits Your Association 1) It gives us the opportunity to support candidates and elected legislators who support and understand our industry. 2) We get access to legislators, assembly people and senators who pass the laws. 3) It gives us political credibility.

Your Benefits

1) When an individual sends a contribution to a candidate they may not know why. When a PAC does be assured they know why they are receiving the contribution. We want an ear of the lawmaker to present our side to. 2) Expand our political interest. We may only know one or two Senators or Assembly people that we can talk to yet they are a small percentage of the overall vote. The PAC has the ear and access to the other people who can help our voice be heard. 3) The PAC promotes political awareness and you are more likely to vote or to volunteer to help a candidate.

Please bring a guest to our meeting and be prepared to share with them the importance of NAIFAPAC. If you are contributing and know a member who is not ask them how they want their voice heard in our State and Nation.

Your PAC deserves your strong support!

Please contact David Ion at 458-9022to make a contribution or ask a question.

June is the month of appropriations! All bills that need funding are in line. June is an important month in the capitol since a budget is suppose to be passed next month. NAIFA-California is watching all of the bills I have mentioned over the past several months.

Of particular interest are the health bills. The Governor, The Speaker and the Senate Leader all have proposals for consideration. And there are certain things about each bill that NAIFA-California will not stand for. One of the biggest is the “purchasing pool” described in each bill.

I am seeking volunteers! No I don’t need your time (although that is appreciated) but I do need your financial support. I would like to see each member of our local contribute 1% of their income to the PAC to support us in our State and National levels.

As we face the future it is up to each licensed professional in the securities and insurance business to open their wallets to promote and protect their business as well as to assist others starting today. As Jack Smith mentioned at our last meeting times have changed.

New agents are not supported financially and unfortunately many highly qualified individuals are forced out before the even have a chance to succeed. A great deal of this is due to legislation and greed.

Without your support to fight legislation which ads to the onus of being in business and by your keeping your checkbook and wallet closed why do we continue to ask about the next generation of agents. We need people to volunteer their resources and time to make our PAC, State and Locals strong again. Don’t delay, call me today.

This “pool” would create a health insurance policy that would be in direct competition with the private sector. In many instances the “pool” policy would be less expensive and more benefit rich than existing health insurance companies. If you are an employer or employee looking for health insurance, which do you choose? A less expensive (artificially lower cost) government written policy or a more expensive (but actuarially correct) policy written by a health insurance company?

Giving Back The NAIFA-CC Family Care Fund committee recently received 3 requests for funds to help out members of our community. We are glad to report that we were able to grant all of the requests: A family whose home burnt down, an ex-police officer who became paralyzed in the line of duty and a young man, who suffered a severe loss of use of his legs after an unfortunate fall (he might be able to recover after a long road of physical therapy).

Our Family Care Fund is off to a good start. We have been able to help families in need and we still have funds available to help others. With your help, we’ll be able to raise additional funds and hopefully to give back for many years.

If you know of someone, or hear or read a news report on a local family that had an unfortunate event take place, one that they could not have planned for, affecting their children or leaving them in severe hardship, let us know. You can request a submission form by calling me, Adi Ringer, at 474-6006 or by e-mail:[email protected]

Your Success is Our Bottom Line

Membership in NAIFA is all about your success. We give you the tools you need to grow your business and propel your career as an insurance or financial advisor. At NAIFA, we provide our more than 70,000 members with creative sales and marketing ideas, networking opportunities, first-rate sales and skills training, and the best legislative representation in the industry. And, with over 900 state and local NAIFA associations nationwide, you can attend regular meetings locally to network with your peers, share ideas, and form business alliances. Join NAIFA for less than $1 a day, and make a personal investment in your professional future!

May has been an exciting month for me. We did a Career Day presentation at the Cal Poly Financial Management Association on May 11th to a packed room. I was joined by Malcolm Pickett, Connie Framberger, Walt Heagy, Brian Skaggs, and Craig Darnell. We all talked about how we go into the business, the type of work we do, and provided information on perusing a career in the insurance and financial services industry. I received a letter the next day from John Vignocchi the FMA President to thank us and let us know that several students had stopped him on campus to tell him how much they enjoyed our presentation and wanted us to come back again next year. This is the second year we have done this and I plan to make it an annual thing from here on out. I feel it is our responsibility to encourage and inform students about career opportunities in our industry. I want to thank all of you that took time out of your busy schedules to participate the students really appreciate it.

Many of the students are looking for internships and I collected several resumes after the presentation. and. promised. the. members. that.I would get them out to our membership. Unfortunately the internship part of our website

Last I am really hoping to get a group together to start the LUTC program this year we need 5 or more dedicated people who want to obtain and LUTCF or other designations. There are many classes. to. choose. from.. The. process. can. take.a couple of years but it is well worth it. LUTC has been a foundation for many members in our association including myself. It is a lot of work but you will find the rewards amazing, just ask anyone who has been through the program I am sure they will agree. If you are interested please talk to myself or Malcolm Pickett so we can start planning for next year.

I hope everyone has a great summer.
