What Did He Do?

He led a rebellion against the Indians. Bacon got 400 – 500 men to attack the

Doeg and the Pamunkey tribes.

The rebellion started in 1674.

Which Colony??

He was a wealthy colonist from the Virginia colony.

He was know as the instigator for the Bacon’s Rebellion.

Bacon’s Early Life

Bacon arrived at the Virginia Colony, and the Governor, William Berkeley, appointed him to his council.

Also while there Bacon bought two pieces of land he used for parks.

Also, when he first moved into the colony the Governor appointed him some land grant, so he could build a house.

His Rebellion

He drove American Indians living on the frontier out of the land.

Citizens protested that the Indians be moved or killed away from the land.

The purpose of the rebellion was that. Late in 1674, a group of Virginia

Militiamen got together and raided their camps, killing 30 some Indians.

This is how the whole rebellion got started.

Nathaniel Bacon’s Famous Quote

Bacon’s Marriage

Bacon married a rich heiress, her name was Elizabeth Duke.

He married her without waiting for permission.

Elizabeth’s father was so unhappy he decided he would disown her.

Relatives

Bacon was related to the governor of Virginia, but only by marriage.

The governors wife was Nathaniel’s cousin.

Bacon had a wealthy uncle, his name was also Nathaniel Bacon.

Nathaniel’s parents names’ were Warren Otto Jones and Daisy Ruth Turton.

Important Dates.

The rebellion happened in 1674. In 1676 Bacon and his army issued a

Declaration for the People of Virginia. On October 26, 1676, Bacon died from

dysentery.

What happens in the End?

Governor Berkeley returns to his burned down village and his looted home in 1677, at the end of January.

He regains all of his power, by capturing several rebel men, and hanging 23 men.

Later Berkeley was recalled to England after a investigative committee had reported back to England.
