Narrandera High School Newsletter Narrandera High School Issue 7 Week 4 Term 2 Tuesday 21st May 2019 Term 2 continues to progress very positively at Narrandera High. NAPLAN testing was successfully conducted at our school last week, with students in Years 7 and 9 using the online testing platform with no significant technical difficulties reported. Thank you to all of our students who participated so positively and to the staff who led this testing. Our first Hands on High School night was held on Tuesday 7 May. The night was very well attended with approximately 100 people coming along to see what our fantas- tic school has to offer. We will have a second Hands on High School evening in Au- gust. We are now accepting enrolments for Year 7, 2020. All families are encouraged to return their completed enrolment packages as soon as possible. Timetable plan- ning has already commenced for next year and accurate Year 7 numbers will assist as we plan 2020 staffing. Works are continuing this term with the old Lab 1 being re-sheeted with floors and walls being replaced due to white ant damage. This room will become our STEM Centre and our old STEM Centre will be converted into our new Clontarf Room. The bigger Clontarf space will include a kitchen, leisure space (pool and table tennis ta- bles) and a study space. The old Clontarf Room (Drawing Rm) will be returned to general classroom use. We received some good news last week with the Aboriginal Directorate offering sig- nificant funding for the school to re-establish an Aboriginal Learning Centre for 12 months. This centre will work in collaboration with our existing Intervention Centre but will employ an additional teacher to work specifically with our Aboriginal students. The recruiting process for this position will commence soon. This is another positive initi- ative for our school. Stage 6 Reports are due to go home by the end of this week and Stage 6 Parent- Teacher Interviews have been scheduled for Thursday 6 June. This year we have moved to an online booking system for these interviews (SOBS). Parent Teacher Inter- views for Years 7-10 have been set down for Thursday 13 June and bookings will also be made electronically. Bookings for these interviews are now open. Instructions on how to book have been included as part of this newsletter. Parents and Carers are strongly encouraged to come along and discuss the progress of their children. Strong and positive communication between home and school is important to us. I will also be available to meet with families at both these evenings. If you would like to meet with me, please make a booking via SOBS. As the weather cools, some students are wearing jumpers to school that are not part of our uniform. Families are reminded that CHS and Riverina jumpers are only to be worn on a Wednesday (sport day). Students have been reminded on assembly of the assistance available to access school jumpers. Please encourage your children to see their Year Advisor, AEO or Miss Germantse if they need to access this support. Overall, students are wonderful at wearing their uniform and presenting themselves well. Kind Regards, Marni Milne Relieving Principal

    Issue 7 Week 4 Term 2 Tuesday 21st May 2019

Term 2 continues to progress very positively at Narrandera High. NAPLAN testing was

successfully conducted at our school last week, with students in Years 7 and 9 using

the online testing platform with no significant technical difficulties reported. Thank

you to all of our students who participated so positively and to the staff who led this

    testing.

Our first Hands on High School night was held on Tuesday 7 May. The night was very

well attended with approximately 100 people coming along to see what our fantas-

tic school has to offer. We will have a second Hands on High School evening in Au-

gust. We are now accepting enrolments for Year 7, 2020. All families are encouraged

to return their completed enrolment packages as soon as possible. Timetable plan-

ning has already commenced for next year and accurate Year 7 numbers will assist

    as we plan 2020 staffing.

Works are continuing this term with the old Lab 1 being re-sheeted with floors and

walls being replaced due to white ant damage. This room will become our STEM

Centre and our old STEM Centre will be converted into our new Clontarf Room. The

bigger Clontarf space will include a kitchen, leisure space (pool and table tennis ta-

bles) and a study space. The old Clontarf Room (Drawing Rm) will be returned to

    general classroom use.

We received some good news last week with the Aboriginal Directorate offering sig-

nificant funding for the school to re-establish an Aboriginal Learning Centre for 12

months. This centre will work in collaboration with our existing Intervention Centre but

will employ an additional teacher to work specifically with our Aboriginal students.

The recruiting process for this position will commence soon. This is another positive initi-

    ative for our school.

Stage 6 Reports are due to go home by the end of this week and Stage 6 Parent-

Teacher Interviews have been scheduled for Thursday 6 June. This year we have

moved to an online booking system for these interviews (SOBS). Parent Teacher Inter-

views for Years 7-10 have been set down for Thursday 13 June and bookings will also

be made electronically. Bookings for these interviews are now open. Instructions on

how to book have been included as part of this newsletter. Parents and Carers are

strongly encouraged to come along and discuss the progress of their children. Strong

and positive communication between home and school is important to us. I will also

be available to meet with families at both these evenings. If you would like to meet

with me, please make a booking via SOBS.

As the weather cools, some students are wearing jumpers to school that are not part

of our uniform. Families are reminded that CHS and Riverina jumpers are only to be

worn on a Wednesday (sport day). Students have been reminded on assembly of the

assistance available to access school jumpers. Please encourage your children to

see their Year Advisor, AEO or Miss Germantse if they need to access this support.

Overall, students are wonderful at wearing their uniform and presenting themselves

    well.

    CHESS

Our Narrandera High Chess team travelled to

Wagga on the 7th of May to play Saint Mary

Mackillop College in the second round of the

Riverina section of the Country Secondary

    Schools knockout.

Our team consisted of captain Ted Ostler, Jack-

son Mars, Bradley Cussans and Charlie Ireland.

Jackson won his match fairly quickly, followed

by Charlie losing his. Ted battled for nearly an

hour before emerging victorious in his match,

while Brad sweated it out for more that an hour

and a half before one wrong move cost him his

    game.

The match finished 2-2, so the tie-breaker rules

came in to play, which saw the board 4 result

discarded. This was Charlie's game which

meant overall we won the match and will now

move in to the third round of the main draw for

    the first time since 2011.

We will play Murrumbidgee Regional High

School - Griffith Campus in the third round, while

there are only 4 other teams still in the main

draw, Deniliquin Christion School, Kooringal HS,

Hennessy Catholic College and Saint Mary

    Mackillop College - Albury.

We wish the boys all the best in their next

    match.

    HSIE

The HSIE faculty recently received a class set of

fieldwork equipment from Darron Watt, the Prin-

cipal at the Environmental Education Centre in

Wagga Wagga, which we will be purchasing to

ensure our students have the opportunity to

    learn valuable skills.

This equipment will allow our Geography teach-

ers to take students outside of the classroom to

learn how to use some of the new technology

and gain valuable knowledge about the envi-

    ronment they live in.

Fieldwork is an integral and mandatory part of

the study of Geography. Fieldwork can en-

hance the learning of all students because it

caters for a variety of teaching and learning

approaches. The enjoyable experience of ac-

tive engagement in fieldwork helps to create

and nurture lifelong interest and enthusiasm for world the students live in.

Congratulations to Rebekah Beer of Year 9

who has gained state dance selection!

After a video dance audition comprising two

different dances, Rebekah has been select-

ed in the NSW Public School State Dance en-

semble. This is an elite dance program for

NSW secondary public school students in

Years 9-12. The program involves several two

and three day workshops in Sydney through-

out the year and performing at the NSW State

Dance Festival in September and the NSW

    Schools Spectacular in November.
