Narrandera High School
Issue 9 Week 8 Term 2 Tuesday 18th June 2019
Term 2 has so far been a very busy and successful one at Narrandera High. Our students
have engaged in a variety of academic, sporting and cultural endeavours and our
school continues to progress in a positive direction.
As you would be aware, Narrandera High has recently engaged in encouraging changes
in practice that have seen a significant reduction in negative student behaviour. It is even
more important for our school to ensure our classrooms are productive places where con-
temporary learning and a relentless priority on improvement are the expectation. This
year our professional learning agenda has focused on teachers working together in
teams through our teacher learning communities. You may have also noticed that stu-
dent assessment is becoming more varied and balanced with students given a variety of
different tasks, rather than just traditional tests and exams to demonstrate their achieve-
ment.
Moving forward, our school will continue to focus on formative assessment rather than just
assessing students at the end of a unit or topic. Formative assessment includes a range of
strategies used in the classroom on a daily basis designed to generate feedback on stu-
dent performance. This is done so teachers can make changes in teaching and learning
based on student need. It involves finding out what students know and do not know, and
continually monitoring student progress during learning. By using formative assessment,
teachers are able to recognise if a student requires additional help or if a student needs
extension. This information can be acquired on a daily basis in the classroom rather than
waiting till the traditional end of unit summative assessment to gain this information. It is
this minute by minute, fast feedback which keeps students engaged and focused on
their learning goals. Educational researchers such as Professors John Hattie and Dylan Wil-
liam have endorsed that the student gains in learning triggered by formative assessment
were amongst the largest ever reported for educational interventions.
Last Thursday we held a highly successful Term 2 Formal Assembly. It was wonderful to rec-
ognise a variety of students for their application and effort. Congratulations should also
be extended to our Choir and Band students for their excellent performance of our an-
them. It was also wonderful to hear Phoebe Romeo perform her own original song. One of
the priorities of our current school plan prioritises improving our participation in the arts
and creating a performance culture at Narrandera High.
Last week our school engaged in a positive VET (Vocational Education and Training) Au-
dit. This involved auditors coming into the school to examine our Stage 6 Hospitality and
Construction programs and compliance with course requirements. Congratulations to VET
Co-ordinator Brett Ireland and VET Teachers Scott Rowlings and Liz McLay for their hard
work and commitment not only towards this process but delivering these courses at our
school.
Our PBS Rewards focus has been highly effective this term. This Thursday, 20 June a signifi-
cant number of students will attend our Term 2 PBS Rewards trip to Wagga. Our major PBS
prize of a laptop computer will also be drawn at the end of this week. The weekly prizes of
an itunes or canteen voucher have also been well received. It is extremely important that
we continue to recognise students who consistently display our PBS values of respect, re-
sponsibility and learning.
Kind Regards,
Marni Milne

RFS CADETS
Every Wednesday in Term 2 The RFS (Rural Fire Service) have been coming to Narrandera High
School as part of the Cadets program. Students have been learning about basic first aid, haz-
ards in a fire, different types of fires and the roles of the different organisations during a fire.
Additionally, the students have been given the opportunity to be the fire crew in the firetruck
and respond to a fire in the STEM centre!!! (Just to let you know, it was pretend)
Date: 13/6/19
Time: 1115
Location: Narrandera High School STEM Centre
Crew: RFS CADETS 2700 (Co-Captains - Madeline Rainbird and Ella Vidler)
Description: The building was seen on fire at 1102. Brett Ireland and Lewis Saunders alerted au-
thorities when they saw the building on fire. At 1115 the firetruck arrived carrying some expert
Cadets, co-captained by Ms Rainbird and Ms Vidler. The co-captains contacted the director
back at the call centre to disconnect electricity from the building and get the Police to come
as crowd control was becoming a real issue. Two hoses were rolled out and connected to
the water pump so the fire could be attacked from all necessary directions.
Result: It was positive, the building attained minimal damage and it did not spread to nearby
buildings.

DRAMA
GIRLS GROUP
Relaxation is necessary for health. Yesterday the Girls Group learnt about the im-
portance of relaxation and identified individual relaxation techniques that are benefi-
cial to them. The girls dabbled in painting with water colours, drawing with pastels and
collaging glass jars with vibrant fabrics. Being creative is a powerful relaxation tool. The
girls have worked particularly well as a team over the past few weeks. Our Girls Group
is one of our new initiatives operating through our Intervention Centre every Wednes-
day.
Year 10 and Senior Drama students thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Griffith to watch the
community production of Legally Blonde. They enjoyed the musical aspect of the play
and are looking forward to incorporating some of the skills they saw into their own per-
formances next term.

A lot of our students reported that they really enjoyed the day!
SCOT GARDNER VISIT
Years 10, 11 and 12 ENGLISH classes were treated to Writing Workshops by visiting au-
thor Scot Gardner. His advice to our young writers was to “use the real world as your
inspiration and write what you are passionate about.”
“…our worlds are jam packed full of stories…” Scot told them…. “…to make lies
sound real, make them odd enough to be interesting but ordinary enough to be re-
al!” Everyone really enjoyed Scot’s Tips and Tricks for Writing …as you can see below
from our student feedback!
Scot Gardner is an Australian writer known for his young adult novels. He has worked as - a landscape gardener, waiter, masseur, home dad, truck driver and musician - plus counsellor and youth worker - before becoming a full-time novelist. Scot Gardner grew up in Greens-borough, a suburb of Melbourne, until his family moved out to the bush at Yinnar South, when he was thirteen

“I thought that it was pretty good. The guy was re-
ally funny and entertaining and I think he gave us
some good story tips.”
SCOT GARDNER VISIT
“Scot was a really nice bloke. He told me interesting ways in working out dif-
ferent problems he faced when writing. I am a bit of a story teller myself and
have shared my writing on ‘Watt Pad’. Scot said he knew of the site too. We
ended up talking about Writer’s Block, at lunchtime, and he said when he
gets in a muddle he goes for a walk and writes - which helps. This helped me
as I often ‘hit a wall’ when writing. He said when you do have a block to write
ideas down anyway and then edit them later or have someone else help you
edit. When describing the features of his characters he likes to leave it to the
imagination of the reader rather than writing a full, detailed description. He
often just tells you about their actions etc. and lets you imagine. So helpful! ”
Elizabeth
“He was a very funny guy. When we did tasks with Scot, he ex-
plained and helped people, who didn’t have a name for their char-
acter, really well. I liked his character. He simply just said what he
wanted to say and almost all of the things he said were funny!” Cy
“The author was hilarious and entertaining. I learnt a lot about
writing books and how he comes up with his ideas and creations.
I’m grateful that he decided to some here. THANK YOU Scot
Gardner!” Ella
“The author was very entertaining and useful. We have learnt a lot
about writing and how to process ideas into writing. We appreci-
ate Scot Gardner coming and teaching us new skills.” Hannah

STAGE 6 PDHPE
Stage 6 PDHPE students dissected
hearts with Mrs Lister. They really en-
joyed this activity where they were
able to see the chambers of the heart
and follow the direction of blood flow
through the heart. Last week Stage 6
PDHPE students also participated in a
practical lesson with Mr Chappell
where they applied the varying energy
systems and were able to identify the
transition from the Alactic energy sys-
tem, to the Glycolytic energy system
and then the Aerobic energy system.
