2 st Summary- Nanotechnology and Electron Microscopy Dr. Wilfredo Otaño February 12, 2015 During the Seminar of Nanotechnology and Electron Microscope we were introduced into the nano world which consists of the things that are within the radius of five hundred to ten nanometers scale. (Afterwards we were taken to a series of.stations in the nanotech field that complied of small processes like the creation of material through an equipment that could stain with a certain material in our example we used gold and through the conditions of temperature and pressure to see the results of the stained material. Once the material was stained it could add on some properties of the metal like boiling point, conductivity and others. In order to see the formation of fibers, we had to look through the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). We also learned other concepts on the nano scale like the behavior of particles in layers because the more inner the particles are their behavior with be different to those on the outer side. Dr. Otaño said that the particles that are in the surface will behave differently than those that are in the core of any material just because they have more superficial area. We also saw some allotropes of the carbon atom that could be in a graphite or diamond, but recently discovered from the graphite when a thin amount is taken. This thin layer of graphite can have many new purpose of conductivity of electricity in nano scale for future investigations. Nanotechnology can be complicated but interesting in the matter that the processes that take place in such scale are able to be studied and worked upon. Even though we successfully prepared our sample we weren’t able to see the filaments on the SEM. Word count 250
