OCTOBER  SPEAKER  -    Zeni  Maartman

Zeni  Maartman,  a  Chartered  Insurance  Professional,  is  part  of  the  management  team  at  BCAA,  where  she  enjoys  working  with  a  team  of  16  experienced  insurance  agents  providing  the  service  of  peace  of  mind,  with  a  variety  of  insurance  products,  including  travel  medical,  auto,  home,  and  life.  She  has  been  with  BCAA  for  Vifteen  years.

Prior  to  management  Zeni  was  a  Commercial  Insurance  Broker  for  Nanaimo  Credit  Union.

She  has  worked  in  the  insurance  industry  for  23  years.

Zeni  has  lived  most  of  her  life  here  on  Vancouver  Island,  growing  up  in  Errington  and  raising  her  two  children  in  Nanaimo.  Zeni’s  involvement  in  the  community  includes  past  School  Trustee  and  past  President  of  Tourism  Nanaimo.

Going  on  a  vacation,  you  want  the  peace  of  mind,  that  you  know  what  to  do,  who  to  call  and  what  to  expect  when  you  face  a  medical  emergency.

SEPTEMBER  SPEAKER  -    Trevor  D.  CradduckTrevor’s  former  career  was  as  a  Medical  Physicist  in  Nuclear  Medicine.  He  was  Professor  and  Chairman  of  the  department  at  what  is  now  Western  University  in  London,  Ontario.  Upon  “retiring”  from  that  position  he  oversaw  the  implementation  of  a  high  speed  digital  network  linking  the  four  hospital  campuses,  the  university  and  Fanshawe  College.  From  there  he  went  on  to  assist  the  management  team  at  ONet  which  at  that  time  provided  the  network  services  to  all  the  universities  and  colleges  in  Ontario.

In  1999  Trevor  was  invited  to  become  the  Director  of  Telehealth  for  the  Province  of  Alberta  when  an  injection  of  $21M  had  been  made  for  the  expansion  of  the  telehealth  network  in  that  province.  So,  over  the  span  of  the  next  three  years,  Trevor  saw  the  network  expand  from  25  sites  to  more  than  325.

From  2005  to  2009  Trevor  served  on  the  Research  and  Development  Advisory  Panel  to  the  Board  of  at  the  time,  Atomic  Energy  of  Canada  Limited.  It  was  during  that  period    the  decision  was  made  by  the  Board  to  halt  further  development  of  the  MAPLE  reactors  that  had  been  designed  to  produce  Mo-‐99  for  use  in  medical  imaging  on  a  commercial  scale.  It  was  shortly

after  Trevor  retired  from  the  panel  that  the  NRU  reactor  suffered  an  extended  shutdown  which  had  a  signiVicant  impact  on  the  delivery  of  Mo-‐99  generators  to  the  nuclear  medicine  community.

In  his  presentation  Trevor  will  describe  the  use  of  nuclear  reactors  to  produce  radioisotopes  for  use  in  medical  imaging  and  will  touch  on  some  of  the  background  behind  the  decision  to  cease  development  of  the  MAPLE  reactors  as  well  as  the  repair  of  the  NRU  reactor  in  2010.

NANOOSE  BAY  PROBUS  FRANCES  BARKLEY  EXCURSION  -  Judy  Miller  (with  Photos  by  Ron  Windrim  and  Ron  Bell)

Thrills  and  Chills  on  the  MV  Frances  Barkley!

Twenty-‐seven  Probians  cruised  the  waters  from  Port  Alberni  to  Ucluelet  and  return  on  the  MV  Frances  Barkley  on  Monday,  August  27th.    After  an  early  embarkation,  the  ship  cruised  down  the  inlet,  picking  its  way  through  the  salmon  Vishermen  who  proudly  displayed  their  bounty  for  all  to  see.    The  weather  was  cloudy  and  cool  in  the  early  part  of  the  day,  which  made  for  some  serious  “rockin’  and  ‘rollin”  en  route  (and  we  don’t  mean  Elvis…..)

During  the  trip,  the  group  was  treated  to  several  humpback  whale  sightings,  as  well  as  a  chance  to  watch  a  hungry  black  bear  enjoy  a  seafood  lunch  along  the  shores  near  Sechart  Lodge.

During  the  one  hour  stop  in  Ucluelet,  there  were  unconVirmed  reports  of  some  back  alley  drug  dealings  among  the  group  (with  “Gravol”  being  the  Vlavour  of  the  week.)    Fortunately,  the  one  RCMP  ofVicer  stationed  in  Ucluelet  was  on  coffee  break  at  the  time.    There  were  also  numerous  rumours  that  a  strip  poker  game  broke  out  on  the  lower  deck  of  the  ship,  although  no  photos  were  available  to  provide  conVirmation.

As  the  afternoon  progressed,  the  temperature  warmed  up,  the  sun  made  an  appearance  and

the  cruise  through  the  Broken  Island  Group  was  an  event  to  be  remembered.    At  the  end  of  the  day,  as  the  last  whale  tail  disappeared  below  the  surface,  this  trip  was  declared  another  Probian  success.

Many  thanks  to  Anne  Larson  for  organizing  such  a  great  day!

Tasting  #  7  of  the  2012  SeasonHosted  by  Lynn  and  Ross  Grifgiths  and  Jean  and  David  Russell

The  7th  Les  Wineaux  Tasting  of  the  2012  season  was  held  at  the  GrifViths’  home  on  the  8th  of  August.    Twenty  Vive  wine  “connoisseurs”??  were  present  to  celebrate  the  Summer  Wine  Tasting  Olympics.    The  evening  got  off  to  a  spectacular  start  with  the  arrival  of  “Her  Majesty  the  Queen”,  aka  Jean  Russell  wearing  a  very  sporty  pink  hat  and  matching  jacket  to  open  the  ceremonies.  After  a  lofty  speech  of  encouragement  to  the  competitors,  “The  Queen”  requested  007,  aka  David  Russell  to  begin  the  pyrotechnics  display.  This  was  then  accompanied  by  the  Les  Wineaux  Anthem  “Red,  Red  Wine”  from  hisvery  slick  iPad.  Everyone  agreed  this  number  had  more  glitz  than  the  more  costly  London  Opening  ceremonies!Six  countries  (Australia,  Canada,  France,  Italy,  Spain  and  Germany)  competed  for  Gold  and  a  position  on  the  Winner’s  Podium.  The  standings  were  as  follows:

White  Wine  Competition:A  2010  Chardonnay  from  Gray  Monk  in  the  Okanagan  Valley  with  a  price  tag  of  $16.99  was  the  winner  of  the  Bronze  Medal….How  come  the  Canucks  win  so  many  Bronzes?A  2011  Chardonnay  from  Banrock  Station  in  Southeastern  Australia  priced  at  $11.99  was  the  winner  of  the  Silver  Medal.A  2010  Chardonnay  from  Louis  Latour  in  Bourgogne,  France  priced  at  $20.99  was  the  winner  of  the  coveted  Gold  Medal.

Red  Wine  Competition:A  2011  Lambrusco  Di  Modena  from  the  Emilia-‐Romagna  Region  of  Northern  Italy  earned  the  Bronze  medal.  The  chilled  Vizzy  wine  was  a  big  hit  with  the  Gals,  but  less  so  with  the  Gents.  At  $9.99  a  bottle  it  seemed  like  an  excellent  value  for  the  summer  picnic  season.A  2001  Tempranillo  from  Spain,  matured  in  oak  barrels  for  a  minimum  of  24  months  and  released  10  years  following  vintage,  won  the  Silver  Medal.  The  price  tag  was  $15.99.A  2009  Pinot  Noir  from  the  Pfalz  Region  of  Germany  took  the  Gold  Medal  and  was  priced  at  $18.99.

Early  in  the  proceedings,  the  participants  were  given  a  Summer  Olympics  Quiz  on  host  cities  and  dates  of  past  Summer  Olympics  in  the  six  wine  countries  represented.  The  winners  were;  Borje  Fredriksson  (Gold),  John  Gibson  (Silver)  and  Janet  Gibson  (Bronze).  All  competitors  claimed  there  was  no  spousal  collaboration,  googling  or  use  of  I-‐phones!!!

Lynn  and  Jean  did  a  great  job  with  the  nibbles  which  rounded  out  yet  another  great  evening  of  fun  and  friendship  amongst  Les  Wineaux  Tasters.

INTERNET 101 :-) In  the  next  few  Probus  Newsletters,  you  will  Vind  useful  (interesting?  trivial?)  technology  tips  to  try  out  and  perhaps  incorporate  into  your  user  repertoire.    This  month,  here  are  some  tips  for  using  our  favorite  search  engine,  GOOGLE.

SOME “UNKNOWN” GOOGLE TIPS

1.    DEFINITIONS  -‐  pull  up  the  deVinition  of  a  word  by  typing  ‘deVine’  followed  by  the  word  you  want  deVined.    For  example,  typing  deJine  technology  would  bring  up  the  deVinition  of  that  word.

2.    FIND  WEATHER  and  MOVIES  -‐  Type  ‘weather’  or  ‘movies’  followed  by  the  city  and  province  or  a  postal  code  to  display  the  current  weather  conditions  or  movie  theaters  in  that  area.    For  example,  typing  weather  Calgary  Alberta    or  weather  T2W  2M9  gives  you  the  current  weather  conditions  for  Calgary.    Typing  movies  Calgary  Alberta  or  movies  T2W  2M9  gives  you  a  link  to  showtimes  for  movies  in  that  area.

3. FIND  PDF  RESULTS  ONLY  -‐  add  Vile  type  to  your  search  to  display  results  that  only  match  certain  Vile  types.    For  example,  if  you  were  looking  for  documents  related  to  a  particular  type  of  sailboat,  in  this  case  CS  Yachts  and  if  you  wanted  to  display  only  PDF  results,  type:  “CS  Yachts”  Viletype:pdf.    This  is  a  great  way  to  Vind  online  manuals.    Try  it  with  ‘doc’  Viles  too!

4. CALCULATOR  -‐  use  the  GOOGLE  search  engine  as  a  calculator  by  typing  a  math  problem  in  the  search.    For  example,  100  +  200  would  display  the  result  as  300

5. TRACK  FLIGHT  AND  PACKAGES  -‐  Enter  the  airline  and  Vlight  number  to  display  the  status  of  an  airline  Vlight  and  it’s  arrival  time.    For  example,  type:  Westjet  WS515  to  display  this  Vlight  information  (if  available).  Google  can  also  give  direct  link  to  package  tracking  information  if  you  enter  a  UPS,  FedEx,  or  USPS  tracking  number

ANOTHER  GOLF  OPPORTUNITYThe  members  of  Probus  Club  of  Nanoose  Bay  wish  to  thank-‐you,  Shelagh  and  Maurice,  for  your  many  hours  of

dedicated  service,  for  many  years,  to  our  club.    Your  smiling  faces  have  greeted  us  and  we  appreciate  the  commitment  of  time  and  energy  you  have  given.    All  the  best  in  your  new  home  and  we  look  forward  to  seeing  you  at  our  club  functions  anytime.
