Room 2

Happy New Year!

Brand New Water Bottle Water Fountain

Room 2 is excited about our new filtered water fountain that also fills water bottles!

The story starts back in September 2017, when Mrs. Gunn and Mrs. Catherine came to our class and asked, “What would make NBES an even better place for learning?”. Emily and Dallas suggested a better water fountain that could fill up our water bottles. We all know how important drinking water is for our learning brains so we wanted to have good tasting water, and be able to fill our water bottles quickly. We approached PAC with our idea, and they agreed that it would make NBES an even better place for all kids. So we got to work fundraising. We raised funds by volunteering at the school bottle drive and volunteering at the Nanoose Pumpkin Walk. With our actions we raised money to help pay for the water fountain which was installed over the Winter Break! Now the whole school will be able to enjoy clean, filtered water while they learn and play!

The Provincial Satisfaction Survey is unique in its scope, size and usefulness to schools. It gathers information from parents, teachers and students on topics related to school environment, safety, and achievement. The information is used for planning in individual schools and provides a district and provincial perspective.

The 2018 Satisfaction Survey will be administered to students in grades 4 and 7, their parents, and all school staff. We encourage parents to participate in this survey, as the results are important in identifying and celebrating current strengths, as well as determining where the school needs to focus improvement. The surveys contain standard questions for the Province – in addition, questions from the school and/or district that focus on local conditions or issues may be included. Please stop by the office to get your system access number.

The survey can be completed electronically and can be accessed on the Internet at http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/sat_survey/access.htm until April 27, 2018. Any computer with an internet connection can be used, and access to the e-survey is simple and secure. All that is required is a logon number that the school will provide to participants. Provincial, District and School Reports for previous years can be viewed at the same site, without a logon number.

Use of Technology

We value the use of technology as an integral part of teaching and learning. Our handheld devices have become part of our daily routines and give us access to a wide variety of tools, including photographing our students doing all sorts of activities at school. We have noticed that some photos of our students have appeared on social media – we understand that people taking and sharing photos during school sanctioned activities are doing so with good intentions. What people may not realize is that we have a number of students who have media restrictions in place and parents have indicated they do not want their child’s photo to appear publicly. In order to respect the privacy of our students, we ask that you do NOT download, copy, or distribute any pictures or other personal information through social media that contain images of students and/or student work other than your child’s.

Students are expected to follow the Code of

Conduct on the way to and from school, in all areas of the school and in all play areas at the school. This includes our work around safe use of electronics. As stated in our planners: If electronics are brought to school they must stay in backpacks unless the classroom teacher has asked for devices to be used. This includes connecting with families about after school arrangements – students are welcome to use the office phone if needed.

We have had a number of families express concern about technology devices being used on school grounds, at busses or at bus stops – again – taking photographs and distributing photographs of other children is not safe and we encourage you to talk with your children about respecting the

Rain ~ Wind ~ Snow

With the heavy rain and wind we ask that you send your child with appropriate outdoor clothing for recess and lunch. Smaller children should have a change of clothes left at

school. Thank you!

STUDENT SAFETY

If you are coming to school on a bike, scooter or any wheeled transportation you must wear a helmet. None of these are to be ridden on school property.

Just a reminder that if there are no parking spaces please park on the road in front of the school or in the Nanoose Place parking lot and walk through the back of the school. Please note that there is no parking along Northwest Bay Road.

This is for the safety of all of our children. Thank you for respecting this request!

Please do not park on the sidewalk near the handicapped parking. The sidewalks are for students walking with parents to their vehicles. Thank you!

Criminal Record Checks

If you have not completed a Criminal Record Check and are wanting to volunteer in a situation where you might find yourself alone with a child you must have one on file. A letter and forms are available at the office. Thank you! Of late we have had a number of requests for same day service or next day service and often the parents are disappointed when we can't complete them in that time frame.
