Birthday Chemistry

Every day, scientists do investigations and make observations in chemistry. These scientists are called chemists. Chemists work out why materials have certain properties. They find out how materials change in chemical reactions. They create new materials, with perfect proper- ties for particular purposes.

What to do

Go to this website: http://www.rsc.org.uk/learn-chemistry/collections/chemistry- calendar

Click on your birthday. Fill in the form to show others in your new class why your birthday is important in

chemistry.Hints; Fill in the form in your own words. If there is a word you don’t understand, ask someone for help, or look it up in a

dictionary or on the Internet. You can draw a picture or find one on the Internet, print it out, and stick it on the

form.

Why is my birthday important in chemistry?

3)Food and Nutrition

DrawingPractice Always Makes Perfect!

A skills you will need in every D&T area is draw- ing. Show us your amazing skills a show us some examples of your best drawings. If you’re stuck: Why not look at tutorials on YouTube? Draw objects from around your home. Take pictures and try tracing them to get used to

the shapes.

MakingGet Creative!

In D&T we LOVE making things. Are you doing anything over the summer holidays?Do you have a family member that is doing some- thing you can help with?Take pictures of you on your own or helping out to build and create something. This can simply be a toilet roll project to building a new shed.

TextilesTry out a few life

skills!

We also LOVE life skills in D&t. Part of that is learning sewing techniques. BUT we also know that lots of people do textiles crafting as a hobby— especially during a long time off.Take some pictures (or bring in examples) of some textiles crafting that you have done over the summer holidays. We really want to see what you can do! (even if it is just sewing a button on!)

CookingBecause … Yum!

Who doesn’t love food? Well, part of what we learn in D&T is how to cook and the importance of nutrition.Over the holidays, why not show off your skills and photograph some of the food you have made (or helped with) over the summer holidays? This can be from a simple beans on toast to a full on din- ner for the family! Bonus points if you can turn these photographs into a diary of how you cook it—imagine you’re Jamie Oliver!

Task 2

What is a family Crest? - A family crest can also be known as a Coat of Arms or Shield of Arms. Think of a crest like a trademark or custom stamp for your family. Colour schemes and patterns also contribute to each crest's unique design. Even the shield's overall shape --from round to square and all other variations --holds meaning. There is usually a motto stamped or engraved prominently on thecrest. Each of these elements represent character traits that the family is known for, such as strength, wisdom, leadership, agility and resilience. We want you to research your family crest or design a new one for your family. Below is an exam- ple of a family crest, in fact, here are some of our

Task 3

As a young historian you must understand that everything has a meaning. De- scribe why you used certain colours, symbols etc. on your family crest? What do they mean?.

Finally, will you be our next Young Historian? See you in September!
