Struggling to afford a suitable space in Sunderland to develop your artistic practice?

MBC Arts Wellbeing CIC partnered with Norfolk Street Arts, and all are delighted to offer two emerging practitioners the chance to develop their practice in generous large studio space.
This project has been made possible through Arts Council England funding and is supported by a range of City wide stakeholder such as Sunderland City Council, Sunderland BID and the University of Sunderland and Enterprise.
This project is supported with funding from Arts Council England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, through the Unlock strand of Sunderland Culture’s Great Place programme.
The creatives chosen will be independently selected from staff from Sunderland Culture, University of Sunderland, Enterprise and Sunderland Business Improvement District.
This is a great opportunity to integrate with emerging and professional artists as well as benefiting from the networking and support provided MBC Arts Wellbeing CIC and 31 Norfolk Street.
There are two residencies available with two different themes. The creative practitioner applying will need to propose activity surrounding Sunderland’s industrial heritage of either;
1) Glass and visual communication 2) Maritime commerce & exchange
There are large studio spaces will be available from the beginning of August.

Spacious light, secure studio space for creative practitioners (business premises only, not to be considered as living accommodation)
A kitchen area Toilets and washroom facilities Hours of Studio access: 8am -8pm to be negotiated with MBC if otherwise Access during office hours including kiln room Access to the community room for projects and meetings (to be booked out
with MBC, Terms apply please ask for further information) Ceramic & flatbed glass kilns
Mission & activities of the residency
The mission of this project is to support two emerging artists who aim to develop their careers in the creative sector in Sunderland. This residency aims to support emerging creative entrepreneurs who are dedicated to becoming a creative self-sustainable sole traders or other businesses.Vincent Todd (Director of Norfolk Street Arts) will lead on the curation, administration and management of this residency.The selection team will be a comprised of a panel of specialists from supporting partners (Sunderland Culture, Sunderland BID, University of Sunderland and Enterprise)
What this residency offers are; - A large studio space paid for 12 months (inclusive of bills, rates and service
fees)- Access to a wider artistic emerging cultural hub - Development conversations & grant application support with Norfolk Street
Arts - Opportunities to test workshops though MBC Arts Wellbeing’s ‘brew sessions’
- Access to partnership networks and professional links - An artist’s fee of £1250.00 per practitioners. ( £12.50 per hour- 100 hours)
The practitioner will be required to; Utilise the studio and develop a body of work and completing 100 hours
towards the residency project. Use the studio to create and deliver other projects of their own. Take part in open studios events when scheduled (one is required by the
funder but other events may be arranged) Engage with the support provided by the partners and build their practice to
be sustainable. Complete the residency with a body of work culminating in an exhibition
supported by Sunderland Culture. Participate in the artist’s talks programme at The University of Sunderland. Please note some works may be selected to be retained with the building of
31 Norfolk street to keep a log and archive of the residency. Write their own grants to sustain their practice and maximise the potential for
this project and others in Sunderland. (Support will be given)
