Session 1 – What is Family?

Objective: define what is meant by family

Mind-map the different words, ideas and feelings you link to the word ‘family’.

In the most basic definition, a group of people who share a legal bond or a blood bond is a family:

• Legal Bonds: Families are legally bound through marriages, adoptions, and guardianships, including the rights, duties, and obligations of those legal contracts. Legal bonds can be changed, expanded, or dissolved to change the composition of a family.

• Blood Bonds: Individuals who are directly related through a common ancestor are part of a family. This includes both close and distant relatives such as siblings, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Researching a family tree or genealogical records can reveal familial blood bonds.

Session 2 – My Family Tree

Objective: describe the make-up of your own family

While the direct legal and genetic relationships you share with others can help you create your definition of family, there is more to family relationships than these basic concepts.

Task: Using the model family tree from the Simpsons, create your own family tree on the next page. Think about where the blood and legal bonds are in your family tree.

Session 3: How are there different types of family?

Objective: explain the different types of family

There are many different types of families, each of which is equally viable as a supportive, caring unit. Many families can be classified as more than one specific type, and every family has its unique characteristics that make it special and comforting to its members.

Task: Match the definition to its key term.

Nuclear Family

This a family where two people of the same sex live together and have a civil partnership or marriage. They may or may not have children.

Extended Family

This is the parents and their children living in the same residence or sharing the closest bonds.

Complex Family

This type of family includes all relatives in close proximity, such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. In a family household that is extended, these relatives typically live together and all share daily household duties.

Step Family This type of extended family has three or more adults plus their children. This type of family may be formed through divorce and remarriage.

Adopted Family

This type of family shares legal bonds but not genetic ones. Two parents may adopt a child to whom they share no blood relationship, or one parent may adopt the child of the other parent.

Single-sex family

This is a family where the adults have divorced and remarried, bringing children from other unions together to form a new nuclear family.

Oxytocin

• There is a very important chemical in the human body called oxytocin.

• When it is released in the brain, it causes us to feel a desire to connect with other people and create a loving bond.

• The love drug is very important, because without it there can be serious consequences.

What would life be like if you didn’t have any social or physical contact with other humans?

Watch the Castaway clip and think of some ideas:

Session 7: How do I deal with grieve?

Objective: explain the 5 stages of grief

The stages of mourning and grief are universal and are experienced by people from all walks of life. Mourning occurs in response to an individual’s own terminal illness, the loss of a close relationship, or to the death of a valued being, human or animal. There are five stages of normal grief:

Page | 17 Wellbeing Study Booklet: Modern Family

Task: Read through the 4 scenarios below. Which stage of grief are they in? How would you help a friend in this situation?

Scenario 1 Julia’s grandfather died a few days ago. Julia used to be very active in the Netball Club at school, but lately she has stopped participating. Instead of staying after school with the rest of the group, she goes home and watches television. She cries a lot and has lost interest in things she used to do.

Scenario 2 Anna’s cousin has been seriously injured in a car accident and is not expected to survive. Anna prays and promises that if her cousin lives, she will spend lots of time with her and give her the choice of activities.

Scenario 3 Debbie’s favourite uncle died last night after being ill with colon cancer. Debbie was very sad when she first heard about the cancer, but she had said goodbye and told her uncle how much she loved him. When she learned he had died, she went to a lake with a friend and told her friend stories her uncle used to tell her.

Scenario 4 Billy and Eric have been best friends since playing football on the same pee-wee team in primary school. Billy has been diagnosed with a rare, life-threatening form of cancer. Eric has been very nervous since the diagnosis. He recently shouted at Billy that they “had been through so much together. How could you die and leave me? It isn’t fair.”
