Welcome!

Welcome to the first ever Health and Wellbeing Week at London MetropolitanUniversity.

This exciting week of events has been organised by London Metroplitan Univer-sity Students’ Union,The Counselling & Wellbeing Service and the Student De-velopment & Activities Service. The aim of the week is to enhance yourawareness and knowledge of issues related to physical and mental health and torun some innovative workshops and stalls.

There is a diverse range of stalls and workshops, with facilitators from both in-side and outside the University. You may fancy a health test; advice on safer sex;a refreshing session of yoga; advice on how to manage your finances or greattips on how to do well at interviews; personal development through art; gain asense of freedom and strength to stop smoking; enjoy a spiritual clean up; relax-ation and meditation; a chance to know your body and reduce your stress levelsthrough bio-feedback; or finding out about the effects of cancer.

We hope the event can inspire you to discover something empowering in theprogramme and in your life. Please let us know your thoughts on the week, bycompleting the many questionnaires which will be available during the week.

Hi everyone!

My name is John Forrest and I am the Welfare Facilitator in the InterimStudents’ Union Team. Health and wellbeing is one of the most impor-tant subjects there is especially for students!

The aim of the Health and Wellbeing week is to raise awareness of a variety of health issuewhich can effect you as students. For this reason we have arranged a series of Health Fairs andworkshops across both campuses of our University. Subjects covered include sexual health, men-tal health, drug awareness , health living and more. We will also have information and stallslooking at staying safe e.g. looking after yourself and others on nights out as well as loads more!

We hope you find the whole process useful and informative.

It is certainly . Counselling is an opportunity for you to think and talk, in confidence,about any personal or emotional issues that may be concerning you. It is a chance to examine,clarify and understand your concerns and to explore more effective ways of dealing with them.University counsellors deal with a variety of issues, including: problems with studies and exams,personal relationships, identity, loneliness, anxiety, depression, suicidal feelings, homesickness,family problems, sex and sexuality, cultural issues, life changes, bereavement and loss, eatingdifficulties, drug or alcohol problems, life crises, mental health issues, experiences of abuse ordiscrimination, personal growth and development.

Matilda Buckley (Advice & Information Officer)

Maximise your income, budget effectively and manage your bills tominimise stress and enjoy your time at University.  This workshop willfocus on making your money last, getting extra money and helping toavoid and manage debt.

Suddhaka (North London Buddhist Centre)

Mindfulness is a state of present moment attention where you can clearlyperceive thoughts sensations and emotions at the moment they occur withoutreacting in automatic or habitual ways. By developing mindful awareness wecan learn to maintain calmness, clarity of mind and wellbeing, even in themiddle of life's most difficult circumstances. In this workshop we will be lookingat how we might be using the practice of mindfulness to address the symptomsand underlying causes of stress and depression.

Fitz Douglas (Counsellor in Counselling & Wellbeing Service)

This introduction workshop on ‘quitting smoking’, based on clinical trials,aims to help you become aware of your smoking triggers and adopt newstrategies to effectively deal with your nicotine cravings and addiction.

Leo Thomson (Yoga Teacher and Author)

Vinyasa Krama means art and flow. The practice is a flowing sequence ofyoga postures synchronized with the rhythm of your breathing. Your body,breath and mind move as one. Vinyasa Krama gives you peace and vitality.Yoga energises and rejuvenates your whole system, giving you a toned,healthy body and an alert and peaceful mind. It can be practised byanyone. Whatever your age, level of fitness and yoga experience, the jour-ney begins where you are. You work with what is possible for you, graduallycoaxing your body to release old tensions and open to the flow of life. Pleaseleave an hour after eating before coming to the session.

Do you seem to spend all your time rushing from one thing to thenext? Does your timetable rule your life? When was the last timeyou looked up from your studies, opened your eyes and went Wow?Come to a session that will help you get in touch with how to re-bal-ance your life. We will not tell you what you should be or that youneed a Christian/Buddhist/ Muslim/Jewish  faith etc. What we willdo is give you some basic tools to help you find your spiritual path,which will help you work towards an inner calm.

Sexual Health - The tests will highlight Chlamydia in particular. We hopeto be able to hand out FREE test kits for under 25s. Advice on sexual healthclinics and safe sex in general. Stop Smoking - We aim to ‘smokealyse’ youand measure your lung age. Advise you on the NHS Stop Smoking Service,available from pharmacies.

An interactive audiovisual introduction to managing pain, stress, anxi-ety, hypertension and other physiological disorders using respiration,skin temperature, skin conductance, heart rate variability and surfaceEMG biofeedback tools.

Ben Gatty, Meshach Mills and Eve McDougall (Metamorphoses Project)

The workshop will make use of a variety of methods to explore issues related to drug use – ourdesire to avoid difficult feelings and to feel good; precon-ceptions about drug use; how drug use can become a prob-lem. The session will draw upon neuroscience to give youan understanding of the reasons people become drug de-pendant.  Reference will be made to attachment theoryand spiritual ideas on addiction. Meshach and Eve will talkabout their experience of drugs and their experience ofworking with people with addiction issues. Their talk willrefer to forms of support / recovery approaches - 12 step,counselling, rehab, alternative therapies and volunteering.There will be a hand-out summarising things and also one with suggested further reading/weblinks and places to go for support.

This workshop will explore the relationship between alcohol, drugs and sexu-al behaviour within the context of University life. It will highlight potentialrisk and offer strategies to deal with some of the most common issues thatstudents face with regards to safer sex.

Severe anxiety and panic attacks can cause a great deal of personal dis-tress and can have a negative impact on the choices we make, the activitieswe engage in and our confidence in general.  The aim of this workshop isto help you understand, manage or overcome severe anxiety and/or panicattacks. It will look specifically at the affects anxiety has on mood, thought,

our bodies and behaviour. It will also explore several different treatments that are available:what they involve and where to get them.

Hugh Clarke (Counsellor in Counselling & Wellbeing Service)

The session will make use of various practic-es (yoga, meditation, body scanning) to helpyou increase your awareness and bring still-ness and quiet into your body and your life.Please come wearing loose clothing and donot eat or drink for at least 1 hour before thesession.

This workshop will explore the relationship between alcohol, drugsand sexual behaviour within the context of University life. It willhighlight potential risk and offer strategies to deal with some of themost common issues that students face with regards to safer sex.

Thursday 12th March

Mathew Harris (Teenage Cancer Trust)

The session will cover the work of the Teenage Cancer Trust, theproblems currently faced by young people in the NHS from diag-nosis to insufficient and unsuitable treatment, how we addressthis as a charity, coping when someone you know is diagnosedwith cancer and general advice on the subject. It will take theform of a talk which is interjected with anecdotes and kept aslight as is possible.
