They had many visiwrs in their home and overn ight guestS a good part of Ihe time. The children were very active in Church and the Fa mily life centered around events that had to do with theiT Church. Peter Eckley Jr.

Peter speaks in his diary of working on the roads with neighbor men and thei r teams of horses to keep the roads in co ndition for travel. H is laSt diary entry was the 17th of August · 1902, and he passed away August 28th , 1902, bu rial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery. He was active until a week before he died. C harles Hen ry Ell iott, the yo ungest child of C harles Severance and Mary Urmson Elliott, was born April 11 , 1877 near Alpha, Henry County, Illinois.

H is father, Charles Elliott died in 1881. His mother, Mary EllioH, then operated a hotel and restaurant in Alpha. In 1884, she married George Porter, a harness maker in Alpha.

As a young man , Henry learned the trades of broom mak~ ing and gardening at businesses in Alpha.

He married Phoebe Hendricks June 26, 1907 in Galesburg, Illinois. Phoebe was born October II , 1875 in Birchwood. TenneSSC(:, the daughter of Nathan and Mary Campbell Hendricks. Afrer the death of her fathe r in 1901, Phoebe and h('~ "'lomer had moved to Alpha, Illinois to be near relatives.

[n 1907, Mr. Elliott joined Mr. Everman in Sigourney Broom Works business. He also started his own frui t and gar~ den business at his home on the O ld Delta Road in southwest Sigourney. On December 30, 1908, Mr. Everman and Mr. Ellion dissolved partnership. Mr. Elliott then started his own broom shop at his home and operated this business fo r fifty years.

Henry and Phoebe became the parents of two daughters. Bernice married Ernest Martin and Martha married Joh nston Green .

Phoebe died August 12, 1920 and is buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Henry married Carrie Thompson May 20, [922 in Ottumwa, Iowa. She was born November 28, [896 near Floris, Davis County, Iowa, and the daughter of Charles A. and Myna McVey Thompson.

Carrie had a daughter, Donha who married O.J. "Joe" Dewberry.

Henry and Carrie became the parents of six children. Lucile married Lee Rogers, Margery marr ied Charles VanPatten, Charles married Alice Courtney, James married Laurel Eastburn, David married Mary Robinson and Marion .married Shirley Pierce, later Frances Greene.

In [934 , Mr. And Mrs. ElIio([ added a greenhouse to their business, raising spring vegetable and flower plants.

The Elliott family attended the Sigourney Baptist Chu rch. Mr. Ettiort was a 50~ year member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and borh he and his wife, Carrie, were members of the Rebekah Lodge. Carrie was also a member of the Royal Neighbors Lodge and the Sigourney Garden Club.

Carrie died December 17. 1949 and is buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Henry lived at his home until his death June 5, 196 [. He is bu ried on the fam ily plot in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Many people in Sigourney remember earning thei r first spending money as young people picking strawberries. In the 1930's Mr. Eltion paid pickers 2 cents a quart. He sold Straw­berries for 10 cents a quart o r $1.50 for a sixteen quart crat­ed. These were dep ression years.

Many farmers near Sigourney raised broomco rn . They would take it to Mr. Elliott 's broom shop and in return received a share of the finished brooms.

Hendricks Co., IN. George married his first wife, Mary Ann Hampton on 29 October 1839 in Hendricks Co .• Indiana, and six ch ildren were born; Phoebe Jane who marri ed 1 Sf

Reuben Y. Foster, 2nd George P. Overfeh. Andrew Lewis who married Emma Carpenter, Mary Frances who married C harles L McAdams, Isabelle who married John S. Kelvey, W ill iam Wallace who married Josephine Hogin, and George Paris Jr. who married Ceci lia A. Baker.

In 1852, George and Mary Ann Ellis & family moved to Lee Co., Iowa where they resided for 5 years, then moved to Keokuk County, settling first in Van Buren Township. On 14 May 1862, Mary Ann Ellis died and was buried in the Humes Cemetery.

On 15 February 1863, in Springfield, Iowa, George mar-. ried his second wife, Francis Amelia Linvill. daughter of Solomon Linvill & Mary Louisa Passmore. Six children wert born to George and Francis, Margaret who died in infancy, Solomon Linvill Ellis who married Anna Luella Morgareidge, twins Davis P. dying in infancy, and Avis Amelia who married William John Bourke, Roben Theodore who married Flora Sageser, and Mabell Estell who married Fred Jarvis Deuel.

Francis has been previously married to Docto r john Patterson Wilson on 4 February 1855 in Champaign COUnty. Ohio. Four children were born to that couple, Leonidas Grear who married Marcia Alice Smith , Llewellyn Augustus who married Mary Gruber, Lorenzo Linvill who married Anna Luella Morgareidge Ellis (widow of his half-brother, S. L. Ellis) and Mary Anna Louisa who was unmarried.

Dr. JOhn Wilson died 26 November 1861 in Keokuk County, and is buried in the Rice Cemetery where his parents are buried also.

George Paris Ellis died 3 1 January 1890 in Springfield. Iowa and is buried in the Humes Cemetel}' beside his first wife. During his life, he practiced law off and on, was a Notary Republic for 20 years, was elected Representative for the Cou nty in 1859, and served as Justice of the Peace for 20 years.

George's widow, Francis then moved on to Sioux County. Nebraska to be near some of her children. She spent the rest of her life on her son's ranch nor far from Harrison , Nebraska. Francis died on 22 july 1910 and is buried in the Harrison
