Thomas Albert Morgan, born 25 Aug 1805 and John Morgan, born 26 Aug 1811 brothers were born in Wheeling West Virginia and settled in Indiana in 1826 at Fredericksburg, IN Johns son (K) Gimble and Volney were the first to settle in Daviess Co. IN.

His parents moved to Fredericksburg in the Spring of 1841, opening an general store and harness shop in the old building recently torn down to give place to Julians new building. At that time Washington Street was the State road. A brick hotet that stood near the wall on that street, the brick building now occupied by Thomas Richards and a few cabins constituted the town. Mr Morgans father (John) soon errected an old fashioned English inn, where H.L. Siegs residence now stands. It was a very large building, containing more than twenty rooms, had great double porches and was built with a view to the convienience and comfort of the traveling public. It was destroyed by fire about 1855.1

John B. Morgan Sr. was born in Virginia, presumably in the Shenandoah Valley. In 1815 his, parents moved to Floyd County Indiana, in 1815, where he was raised and educated. He entered the saddle and harness trade with his borther Thomas in 1825 in Fredericksburg, IN. and the business proved profitable. The 1850 centus indicated that he had $2,000 to his name, which was quite a bit for that period. 4

"History of Daviess County, Indiana" 1915 pg 422 the maternal grandparents of Mr. Loughmiller were John and Margaret A. (Bright) Morgan, natives of Louisville, Kentucky, and pioneers in Washinton county, where he died, his wife afterward coming to Daviess county with her children. She died in this county at the age of ninety years. They had eight children, Richard, Lizzie, John, William, Sarah, David K., Valentine E. and Lida. These children had one half-sister, Nettie. The grandmother married a second time, her last husband being a Mr. Brown.

Uncle Dick has resided here all these years excepting two years spent in the Lone Star state and a lke period in Pike County, IN where he met and wedded Miss Hester Russell, September 20, 1863. To this union were born six chldren, three of whom are living. His wife died in april 1879, and for a quarter of a century he has planted flowers on her grave and these roses of that love is still blooming in his breast. He was in the service for Uncle Sam for a short time during the vivil war, but his health was so poor that he could not be sent to the front and was help in Indianapolis until discharged. He is here 68 years of age is active in mind, reasonably robust and bids___ to live many years yet.1

Hester Russel Morgan gave birth to her third child, Callaway County Missouri Morgan. His was a premature birth brought about when one of the wagon wheels became detached. The jolt induced the labor. Hester gave birth in a bedroom that happened to be on the county line, hence his name --Callaway County Missouri Morgan.8

Callaway was born in a bed room that happened to be on the county line hence his name. Two years after Callaways birth him mother Hester died. Richard Morgan his father felt that Callaway needed motherly attention. He sent Callasay to live with his sister Lydia Morgan Loughmiller back in Indiana. It wasnt until Callaway started school that he found out that he was a Morgan. After he had found out, he still reffered to the Soughmillers as Ma and Pa. His children thought of them as grandparents. The Loughmillers were made his legal guardian until he reach the age of 21.8

He was captured at Battle of Storm River. He was at the Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee October 15, 1863. Wounded in battle Chickamauga September 19, 1866. Prisoner of War Records show G. W. Tolson, Co. H, 6th Regiment Indiana Volunteers captured at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, December 31, 1862. Surgeon's Certificate for Furlough - Army of the United States, Dept. of the Mississippi, dated May 14, 1862, states that George W. Tolson suffers from Flux. Norma Madge Burges passed away peacefully on Monday Oct 11, 2004. She was born on June 12 1916 to Bertha Edith allison and george Arkes Ark in Washington, Ind. Norma was only 8 years old when she lost her mother. she came out to Oregon by train when she was 21, following her sister Marjorie Witham. She married wilmer george west on Dec 1 1940, and had three children, William Bill West who died in 1978, James W. West and margaret A. Rekow. Norma was a wonderful homemaker and seamstress, and spent many hours working with the Boy Scouts, 4-H Youth, and PTA. She lover her church and grew in her Christian faith. After Wilmer passed away, she met John William Burgess through a pinochle group. They were married on June 25, 1996. Norma gained tow step sons John and Dan Burgess. She retired from her job as a clerk for the Multnomah County Property Tax Division and was then able to fully enjoy camping and fishing trips time with grandchildren, shopping, reading, crocheting, flower gardening, volunteering at her church, and playing pinochle with family and friends. The obit for Volney Valentine Edgar Morgan....Valentine Morgan grew to manhood in Fredricksburg, IN. He was left an orphan when he was a mere child and had to make his way however he could. As a result he was not able to obtain so much as a grade school education. He could not read a book or write a letter. But he did pick up a surpisingly good practical education in his own experience. However the lack of education seriously limited him all through his life and this, together with much bereavement he experience, caused him to be very quiet and reserved. In the years 1895 he came to Dawson County (NE) and he has resided here ever since. .....While he himself belonged to no church , so far as is known, ....He himself attended worship in the


Methodist church of Lexington until he was no longer able to do so. ....In 1871 Mr. Morgan married Elizabeth Bruner in Fredericksburg, IN. To this union 2 daughters and a son were born. These survive their father. They are Mrs. Bertha Lee, Forrest Park, IL. Mrs Henry Miles, North Platte, NE and Mr Edward Morgan of Oshkosh NE. The mother of these three passed away in about 1885. In April, three years later, Mr. Morgan married Mary Miles in Washington IN. To this union 10 children were born. One daughter, Nettie passed away in 1893 at the age of 3 years. This Mrs. Morgan passed away in 1910. The 9 children who survive their parents are, Joseph W. Morgan and Mrs Mary Dunlap of Lexington, William A. Morgan, San Diego CA. Oscar J. Morgan Fr. Collins CO. Andrew and Frank Morgan Cheyenne WY, Mrs Marjorie Sieoff, Ainsworth, NE, Mrs Bea Humpal, Ravenna NE and Dr. Harry Morgan, Ship Surgeon on the USS Grant___at sea. Then years after Mrs. Morgans death Mr. Morgan married Julia Fox in Lexington NE. This was in April 1920. Two years later Mr Morgan was again bereaved of his wife. Five years later in 1927, Mr Morgan married Junetta Gullick in Lexington. Mrs Gullick-Morgan survives her husband.

When Volney married his first wife Christina Bruner he used the name Volney Morgan in 1877. Then when he married Mary Ann Miles he used the name Valentine Morgan in 1888. His son Thomas Edgar Morgan said his fathers name was Volney, so that is what I use. (Barbara McTygue Scanlon) 15

An Oral Tradition handed down in the family.... Volney Morgan was a young man living in Indiana when a knock came at the door. He opened the door and a woman handed him a baby and said, Here is your daughter! She turned and walked away. This daughter was Florence Isabelle Morgan. I have no idea who her real mother was, so she is listed as the oldest daughter of Volney and Christina Morgan. Mrs. Henry Miles Dies in Hospital Following Illness Mrs. Florence Isabelle Miles 75, 720 East 5th street died in a local hospital at 6 pm Friday following a lingering ilness of two years and 10 months. Mrs. Miles was born February 19, 1875 at Washington, Ind., and came to Lexington in 1884. The family then moved to Logan county near Gandy and came to the North Platte in 1913, where they have since made their home. The Miles whould have celebrathed their 60th wedding anniversary on Nov 4 of this year. Mrs. Miles was a member of St Patricks Catholic church and was active in church work until she was hospitalized nearly three years ago. She is survivied by her husband, Henry J. Miles of North Platte, five daughters, Mrs. B. W. Beckius of Oakland CA., Mrs Edward OKeefe of Chicago, Mrs. John s. Manion of Gothenburg, Mrs. R.V. McDill of San Franncisco and Mrs. Albert Interholzinger of North Platte. Four sons, Leo J. of North Platte; Ernest A. of Kitteridge Co., Austin H. of spokane WAS, and the Rev. The Rev. Reymond Miles, 49, pastor of st. James catholic Catholic Church, has been named as a Domestic Prelate of the Catholic Church with the title of Right Reverened Monsignor, by Pope John XXIII. The announcement of the Papal honor beestowed upon Msgr. Miles was made Friday by the Most Rev. John L. Pashang, bishop of the Grand Island diocese. Msgr. Miles was appointed pastor of St. James Parish on Feb 1, 1957. Before coming to Kearney he served as pastor of St. Patricks Church at chadron for nine years. Since assuming the pastorship here, Msgr. Miles has supervised the enlargement of the parish grade school and has acquired site for a parish high school, plans for which now are being formulated. Msgr. Ed Morgan, who was a homesteader in Nebraska, marks 94th birthday....Take from a newspaper story in Washington IN

..... Ed Morgan was 11 years old in 1895 when his family left their farm east of Washington IN and traveled to Nebraska . It was easier to get on out there, he said. More room and good farmland. They went by train with their household goods and horses and milk cows loaded in a box car. They rented a farm for seven years, came back to Indiana and promptly went west again. It was quite a change back here. Our fields out there were half a mile long, and here they were 40 rods. After 1902 the young Ed worked for his uncle (Kim Morgan) a while and on a ranch and in 1911 homest5eaded in the sand hills of Nebraska. His house there was part wood and part sod, but he had built and lived in several sod houses. The only trees in that country were ones the farmers set out in a grove, he explained. Sod houses were not only easier to come by, but were cool in summer and warm in winter with walls two feet thick. The Morgan photograph album has a picture of Ed -plowing with a six house span and he remembers the first late model threshing machine he used threshing 1,000 bushels in half a day. In 1916 he traded a pair of horses for a model T Ford, but when his children by his first marriage went to school he remembers that they drove the three-and-a-half miles in a buggy. The Old West wasnt like the picture shows, he said They show cowboys out chasing cattle on the run. Ive worked with men but I never saw them running. And in all my time there I only saw two fellows carrying guns. They just had rifles on their saddles in case of coyotes going after the calves. In 1937 Ed came back and married Ethel Prosser, a childhood neighbor. The two of them had gone to school together in the Wathen school north of Billings crossroad, the neighborhood where Ethel grew up. She had been a member of Bethany Church. They farmed here until 20 years ago when they sold the place and moved to town. Their furnishings include an elaborately carved settee and other pieces from Mrs. Morgans family that are over 100 years old. Both of the Morgan are more interested in the thing they have planned for the coming months than in the way thing were long ago, but the memories are there. I gave up chewing tobacco when I was 18, Ed said. The young fellows all chewed tobacco out in Nebraska because if a snake bit you, you could smear your chaw on the bite. But one time I started in on a double wad and it5 made me sick. I never chewed again. Its been 73 years since I smoked a cigar and I never smoked a cigarette. When I was in the Platt River Valley near Lexington, Nebraska, the migrating geese came through in the spring.


When we sowed grain it had to be disced in before night or youd come out the next morning and the geese would be there eating all the seed. Before there were trucks to haul away your grain or livestock for sale, I lived 30 miles from the railroad. To get there meant an overnight stop on the way with the teams and wagons. Mrs. Morgan who whizzes through a daily schedule that many women half her age couldnt manage, laughs when she remembers how sickly she was as a child. When I was three years old, the family never thought Id make it and they got a burial dress ready for me. The little white dress dress, stiff with elaborate embroidery that nay museum would love to have, is among her belongings. She turned out not to be sickly after all.

Ethel was the childhood sweetheart of Grandpa Morgan. He returned to Washington IN to marry her after raising his family in NE.

Esther & Lewis were near and dear to the hearts of my siblings and I. They had a beautiful home on Mt. Tabor in Portland. It was so large that in my mind as a child I was sure they were quite wealthy. They lived in only a portion of the main floor of their house. The upstairs and basement were converted into separate apartment units. I think Lewis' mother lived in one of those units for a number of years. There was a large parlor on the main floor that was normally closed off. I remember being in it only once and marveling that a room so grand stood quiet, unused, throughout the year. It was at their house that I first saw color TV and a "radar range" (microwave). One of the things we liked best about their home was Lewis's horse collection. He had horses lined up all along the walls of more than one room of the house - bronze, wooden, ceramic, you name it! If it was good quality and western in theme, he had it. I particularly remember a bronze stagecoach with riders and its teams of horses. I think that piece was a lamp on an end table.

Lewis loved to do stained glass. The house in which they lived in Portland still has several stained glass windows that he made. I lived on Mt. Tabor just three or four blocks from the house for three years (about 3 yrs ago now). I enjoyed walking past the house and looking at it. I never knocked on the door, though. My memories of the interior are so connected to those beautiful horses and my aunt & uncle that it just wouldn't be the same.

Lewis also loved to collect rocks. He collected thunder eggs and a wide variety of agates, jasper, gneiss, and other stones. He cut slabs of the rock (slices about 1/4 inch thick) and had beautiful tables constructed to display them embedded in and covered by a clear layer of plastic. The tables were supposed to go to his granddaughters, but my parents have them. I don't know whether the girls didn't want them, but Don put them in the estate auction. Nobody


bid on them. My parents ended up casting uncontested bids and getting them for perhaps $5-10 each.

During the early 70's, Mt. Tabor attracted quite a few hippies. There's a beautiful, forested park at the top of the mountain. It attracted quite a few of them. Esther & Lewis's house was just a short distance from the park. Some of the free spirits decided to take up residence under the front porch of their house. It's on a hill, so they had a fair amount of clearance. The front door leads into the parlor which they never used. As a result, Esther & Lewis had no idea that they were living there. One day, a neighbor asked Lewis why he was letting all those people live under his porch. He opened the door to the area under his porch and found numerous sleeping bags, campstoves, etc. He hauled it all out onto the lawn and posted a notice saying something like "Come get your things, no questions asked." No one came to claim their equipment.

Barbara, The Morgan house was very beautiful. 6733 SE Morrison. Mt. Tabor is also very beautiful. Darlene Morgan had a friend by the name of Gayle Johnson who, at that time, was with "young life". Gayle and I always played tennis on Mt. Tabor. The house had 33 rooms. Aunt Sadie lived upstairs. After she died, Esther had a friend from Janzen living in the house and she smoked. Early in the morning the smoke filtered its way clear to the basement where Lewis and I had built my room. A one car garage went down into the basement and Darlene parked her car down in the garage. Although Darlene was very crippled with polio, she and I would have some very interesting ping-pong games. You can tell that I have very fond memories of that house as well. Darlene nicknamed me "Agnes" as she thought Shirley sounded too much like a girl.
