2017– 2018 Belfast Rotary President,

Dorothy Havey

December is here! It doesn’t seem possible that we

are passing the halfway mark of my term as Rotary

President. It is an honor to serve in this capacity

and I’d encourage any Rotarian to consider serving

on the board with the ultimate goal of being Club

President. And, as we heard this past week from

ADG Doug Curtis, to consider the position of the

Assistant District Governor!

This month is all about the 100 Fund as our holiday

project. The elves at Santa’s workshop have been

busy collecting and sorting gifts for over 130 chil-

dren across Waldo County. From boots and warm

clothes, to coloring books and crayons, and of

course, toys, the club’s generosity will ensure the

families have a wonderful holiday. The wrap-

ping party begins at 1:30 on Wednesday, De-

cember 13th at the Waldo County Hospital class-

room and the Santas and their elves will deliver

Saturday, December 16th! While the Belfast

Rotary Club does many things for our communi-

ty, this is my personal favorite. It warms my

heart to know that we are helping children who

might not have much for the holiday if it weren’t

for our efforts! A special thank you to Lee Wood-

ward and Marjorie Crowley for their hard work

and all the volunteers who help make this hap-

pen.

So as we approach the holiday season, let us be

thankful for all that we have and be mindful of

ways to continue to help others in our communi-

ty. Thank you, my fellow Rotarians, for all you

do.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

Yours in Service,

Dorothy

New Member Community Volunteer of

the Year

We welcomed another new member in November.

Kim Yesis joined the club. She was sponsored by

Mickey Sirota and is the business manager at Belfast

Dental Care.

Welcome Kim!

Congratulations to Mary Mortier, who was named by

the Belfast Chamber of Commerce as this year's

Community Volunteer of the Year.

Mary is a tireless worker in our club - organizing three

pancake breakfasts a year, coordinating the annual

awards dinner, serving on the Harborfest committee

and so much more. She is a past president, a Rotari-

an of the Year recipient and a Paul Harris Fellow. And

that's just what she does for Rotary! She serves on

the City Council, organizes Belfast by the Bay New

Year's Eve event and keeps the downtown flowers

watered and weeded. We are sure there is more that

she does that we don't know about.

As Lee Woodward put it at our meeting - what took so

long for Mary to be recognized? Congratulations

Mary!

We are very proud of member Cody Keithan and his

building partner Bruno Borzoni for setting a world rec-

ord time at the National Boat Building Contest held in

South Carolina. They were recognized at our club

meeting and presented with the golden gun award for

their achievement. Congratulations!

Remembering Rotary

‘TIS THE SEASON

By Sherrie Wight

No matter what one’s faith, winter is a special time rife with celebrations and remembrances. With

the eternal cycle of life nearing its annual end before bursting forth anew in the Spring, nearly every-

one calls to mind the passing year, loved ones gone, blessings bestowed, friends, family, those less

fortunate, and the promise of new life just a few short months away.

Personally, I’m a fan of that Santa Claus guy. If it weren’t for Dave’s insistence that he can’t live like

that, my house would be decorated for the holiday year-round. Because frankly, the spirit that enve-

lopes this season is the most peace filled and happy one I know. I live for it.

When I was asked to write an article for the December newsletter, I tried to think of how to embrace

our Rotary family in that spirit and was at a loss. I was getting worried. How do you approach a family

of people with such a broad and varied background as well as numerous religious affiliations, beliefs,

and customs and give them a big holiday hug without risking insult to anyone? Suddenly a spirit of

another kind offered me a helping hand. It was a literal blast from the past, a message from years ago

that has been etched into the historical fabric of our beloved organization. I could say many things

but, no one can say it better to Rotarians than the big man himself – no not Santa Claus – the big man

of Rotary. The title of his message says it’s a “Christmas” message but truly it reaches well beyond

that to the very heart of the season. Whether you celebrate Kwanzaa or Christmas, Hanukkah or Yule,

or you just like Santa and his elves, may the spirit of the season bring you happiness and peace.

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE 1930

As my lassie Jean and I were strolling around the yard one summer afternoon, our minds reverted to

the blessings which were ours. We listed our home, perched on the hill top midst friendly oaks and

with evergreens in plenty to give impression of warmth when cold winds blow; we also listed books

and household goods, sacred accumulations of years and representing many sacrifices.

An impulse suggested the question: Would life be worth living without these things? It did not take

long to answer, Yes, life is even more sacred.

Then came another: Is there anything more valuable than life? We thought of the touch of vanished

hands and the sound of voices stilled and realized that there are things without which life would be so

sterile that it might well end. If there were no such things as fellowship with friends and communion

with loved ones, life would be darker than a starless night.

Friendship can hurdle national boundary lines, religious and political differences; and with love all

things are possible.

Christmas is a day plucked from the calendar of the Millennium, love’s own day. That its spirit may illu-

mine your pathway to the last stop of the journey and that every day may be Christmas throughout the

world, by and by, is the fervent wish of JEAN AND PAUL HARRIS.
