Our NAIDOC Week Celebrations commenced with a full school assembly on Tuesday, 7 August 2018. Our parents and families, Elders, school community and community partners were invited to attend this special event. Uncle Lenny Waters commenced the celebrations with a smoking ceremony, cleansing the area and blessing the land as our guests arrived at the assembly. The assembly was opened by Giaan White and Shauny Kaluza.

The Acknowledgement to Country was performed by Kooriana Boney and Zane Ninness in Gamilaraay and English languages. Giaan spoke on this year’s theme ‘Because of her, we can!’ and acknowledged the invaluable contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made, and continue to make to our communities, our families, our rich history and to our nation. This lead into hearing from our special guests, Elder and 2018 NSW Woman of year recipient, Aunty Yvonne Kent and former Tamworth High Student and Vice Captain, Paris Knox who shared their inspiring experiences on Because of her, we can!

Danielle Fogg performed a touching solo, From Paradise written by Archie Roach. After Danielle’s performance, William Fraser and Kiani Haines presented gifts to our Elders and community members; Aunty Yvonne Kent, Aunty Marjorie Treweek, Uncle Neville Sampson, Uncle Lenny Waters and Uncle Buddy Knox. Kiani thanked them for the contributions they have made to improving our students and our school culture. Our talented musician’s Kooriana Boney, Danielle and Patrick Fogg, Jaqueline

Murphy and Tyson Palmer performed Mother’s Eyes, written by Dennis Colon. Our musicians sang the chorus in Gamilaraay language in perfect harmony.

Following this performance, Tyson Palmer accompanied by Aaron Jones (SLSO) sang Solid Rock by Goanna. This Year’s 2018 NAIDOC Deadly Awards recipients were Maddison Banks, Tyson Palmer, Amber Robinson, Simone Robinson, Kooriana Boney, Danielle Fogg, Giaan White, Faith Howarth, William Fraser, Tia Cook, Dakotah Barnett-Suey, Tamia Haines and Bailey Honeysett-Partridge receiving awards for their participation and achievements, cultural involvement and individual personal growth.

Our amazing Aboriginal Dance Group consisted of Patrick Fogg, Tyson Palmer, Carlandra Livermore, Iesha Welsh, Joash Boney, Kiesha Nolan and Maddison Banks accompanied by Brad Flanders from Gomeroi Dance Company performed Dhurrli and the Nymipah Welcome Dance.

Following the assembly our guests were invited to share in morning tea and the cutting of the NAIDOC cake, sharing stories about our wonderful culture.

Girl's League TagOn Friday 3 August 2018 we had an Open Girls team represent Tamworth High School in the League Tag Gala Day. This is an NRL version of Oz Tag which incorporates some varying rules from Rugby League and Oz Tag.

With the increase in popularity of League Tag there was two pool groups on the day. Tamworth High School was in Pool B along with Quirindi Yellow, Oxley and McCarthy White. The first game was against Oxley, with Tamworth High winning that game 4-2. Tries to Kayla Muscat, Dakota Barnett- Suey, pocket rocket, Jade Stark and Elizabeth Woods.

The second game was going to be a much tougher encounter with a very experienced McCarthy side taking to the field. The game started well with a fantastic intercept try to Kayla Muscat. The rest of the game was a close struggle with some excellent defence provided by Kayla Daley and Elizabeth Woods. The final score was a 2-1 loss.

The third game against O’Conner High School from Armidale didn’t count for any points due to them being in the other draw. This enabled the girls to have a bit of fun and throw the ball around a bit. Some new additions to the team such as Mikayla Gross and Molly Beare handled the transition to this new sport well and even providing some excellent runs from dummy half. The final score was a 1 all draw with the try score going to Jade Stark. The fourth game for the day saw the girls up against Quirindi High. That was another competitive match with Georgia White and Lara Follington making

some excellent tags in defence and Dakota Barnett Suey, Kayla Muscatt and Georgia Holcome-Nancarrow running in some well-constructed tries to win the match 3-1. Following this win, it then placed the team into the final to play against McCarthy Blue.

This was always going to be a struggle to back up the efforts of the morning again in the afternoon. A number of rep players grace the McCarthy team yet our girls were not intimidated by what lay ahead. They tagged everything in sight with Georgia Holcome-Nancarrow diving through the air to stop the defence. Unfortunately our girls ran out of steam and McCarthy took the win 4-0.

It was a fantastic day and the girls represented Tamworth High School with distinction. In addition I would like to thank Georgia White and Lara Follington on their final representation for Tamworth High in League Tag. They have been terrific role models and have shown leadership and sportsmanship throughout their representative time at school. It will be a big loss to the team and we will miss them next year.

I would also like to thank the rest of the girls for the day, it makes it enjoyable to coach such a polite and respectful bunch of young ladies.

An update from. . .It has been an interesting transition for your new P&C committee this year. The outgoing executive all stood down leaving every position to be filled.

Fortunately the old committee have been helpful with the handover and your new team are working very hard to continue the great work of your past representatives. As your new P&C President, I would like to officially welcome our current executive Alison Hoffman (Secretary), Amy Frazer (Treasurer) and Kerrin Dominick (Vice-President). I also thank our regular parents and associates for attending the meetings. Everyone’s input is valuable as we endeavour to help make our school the best it can be for all students.

I would also like to acknowledge the total dedication and outstanding support Daniel Wilson (Principal) and Megan Marshall (Deputy Principal) continually deliver at the monthly P&C meetings.

Daniel and Megan’s personal attendance at our meetings and sharing of internal knowledge brings transparency to the schooling system. Their presentations are informative and comprehensive. I believe this information is helpful to all parents wishing to be actively involved or simply understand more about their child’s education.

Camp Tamworth High is the major annual fundraiser and therefore, the primary focus of your P&C. A sub-committee runs this Tamworth Country Music Festival Event.

We would love to meet YOU at the next meeting, Tuesday 21st August, 6:30pm in the Cafeteria. Our special guest is SUE WARDEN - Student Support Officer. Below Sue has given us a brief description of her presentation:

“In my presentation to the P&C I will provide an outline of my job as Student Support Officer, explaining how the role supports students within the school, and most importantly, my availability to parents and carers over concerns they may have about bullying and harassment, the leadership program or general wellbeing issues. I will also provide some wellbeing tips and some helpful apps. I look forward to meeting with you and sharing my passion for my role at THS.”

We encourage as many parents as possible to attend and take advantage of learning more about the operations of the school.

Success StoryCrystal MutchWhile I was visiting my dad in hospital, I came across Crystal Mutch training to be a nurse. She was very proud to have just finished a sponge bath for my dad.

She was a former Tamworth High School Alternative Curriculum Program (ACP) student from 2 years ago and said that it was the ACP Links to Learning Program that opened her eyes to pursue a career of her choice.

I am so proud of her and her professional and caring manner towards the patients she was helping.

About Tamworth High School

THS officially opened on the 25th March 1919 at the East Tamworth site, where ‘Tamworth Public School’ is today. There were 175 students and 30 staff. It was NSW’s 23rd High School. Prior to the establishment of the school, secondary students attended the Tamworth District School, generally staying to about the end of 2nd Form (now Year 8) before leaving at the age of 14 to join the work force around Tamworth largely supplied by the Australian Agricultural Company at Goonoo Goonoo Station and Bective Station.

As student numbers grew over the next 30 years, it became evident that a new school had to be built. It was built in South Tamworth on the present site with ABlock, the school Canteen and toilets and the long B, H and C Blocks and the Industrial Arts Block built first with students being progressively moved from the old site to the present site, initially for classes involving woodwork, secretarial studies, metalwork, needlework and cooking and then for english, mathematics and science classes as the buildings were completed. D Block was then constructed and this completed the ring of buildings around the main quadrangle. By this time student’s numbers had swelled to nearly 1800 students with over 90 staff teaching the whole range of classes in the curriculum.

The present school was completed prior to the Queen’s visit to the school in 1984 with the building of a separate school library. Up until then the school library

was housed upstairs in G Block where the current Staff Common Room now is.

The need for larger grounds or additional buildings as Tamworth’s population grew meant that the school either had to expand further or a new school in Tamworth would be built. The decision was taken to build a second school in Tamworth in Piper Street, North Tamworth and Oxley High School opened, initially with classes housed in A Block at Tamworth High and then as additional classes were formed into the new school in Piper Street. Since that date, student numbers at Tamworth High have steadily declined and further declined with the opening of Peel High and the expansion of Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School to current numbers in excess of 650 students.

The school will celebrate its centenary on 25 March 2019 and a full week of activities have been planned by a very industrious committee for this important milestone in the life of the school.

Please take some time to like us on our special centenary Facebook page - THS Centenary 2019.
