This year’s NAIDOC Week theme, ‘Songlines: The Living Narrative of Our Nation’, encourages us to learn about the Dreamtime – when ancestral spiritual beings shaped our rivers, lakes, plants, land formations and living creatures.

NAIDOC Week is a great opportunity to recognise and celebrate our Indigenous cultural fabric – something we do every day at the City of Sydney. In preparing Sustainable Sydney 2030, the strategic plan that guides everything we do, our community told us that better recognition of Indigenous identity and community is incredibly important. So we created The Eora Journey, a plan that includes public art, support for major events, an economic development plan and a knowledge and cultural centre.

I hope you enjoy this diverse program for NAIDOC Week and take the chance to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across the country.

Jessie Lloyd 11.50am Originally from the tropics of North Queensland, Jessie Lloyd is an award-winning composer, performer and cultural practitioner of Indigenous music and song.

Radical Son 12.30pm With music and stories guided by his Indigenous heritage from the Kamilaroi nation of Australia and the South Pacific nation of Tonga, Radical Son has a unique ability to deliver as a soul singer, rapper and spoken word artist.

Green Hand Band 1.30pm Drawing musical influences from soul, reggae and desert rock genres, Redfern-based Green Hand Band raises awareness of issues such as recovering from addiction, spiritual empowerment and love.

Mi-kaisha 2.30pm Mi-kaisha Masella’s mother is from the Dharumbal people of Central Queensland and her father is Tongan. She started learning piano at the age of five and was a featured artist on ‘The Sapphires’ soundtrack at the age of 11. At 13, Mi-kaisha competed in ‘The Voice Kids’ being part of Team Madden’s top 10.

Opening Ceremony 11am Commencing with a Welcome to Country by Uncle Chicka Madden, accompanied by a traditional smoking ceremony to cleanse the space by Matthew Doyle.

Jax and Daz from Muggera Dancers 11.10am Two of our community’s best, bringing a fusion of hip hop and culture.

Earth Oven Food Stalls Available 11am – 3pm Tuck into a feast from the two earth oven pits dug in Hyde Park. Earth ovens are a traditional method of cooking underground using hot rocks and natural materials to seal in the heat and slow cook food for hours. The food is marinated overnight in traditional sauces and rubs, then steamed, roasted and barbecued all at once in the earth ovens. Sample mouth-watering bites such as bush burgers, kangaroo shawarma, crocodile sausages, corn on the cob and damper.

Earth Oven at NAIDOC in the City

Mark Olive, aka ‘The Black Olive’, one of Australia’s most acclaimed Aboriginal chefs will be sharing his signature infusions of contemporary outback flavours at a series of free cooking demonstrations.

A Bundjalung man born in Wollongong, Mark became interested in cooking as a child, watching his mother and aunts prepare meals. He trained under a European chef and worked in a number of restaurants around the globe before establishing his own business in 2008.

Other activities Basket Weaving with the Billinudgel Weavers 11am – 3pm Come along and learn traditional weaving techniques to create your own piece of art.

Murra Murra Weaving Demonstration 11am – 3pm Master weaver, Nadeena Dixon, of the Wiradjuri, Dharug and Yuin nations, holds Master of Fine Arts from the University of NSW and is an artist educator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Indigenous Programs.

Taronga Zoo 11am – 3pm Cuddle up to a critter when the Zoomobile from Taronga Zoo arrives with some of their animals. Taronga staff will also be on hand to tell you more about the wonderful creatures visiting Hyde Park for the day.

City of Sydney Libraries Program 11am – 3pm Books from the City of Sydney’s Koori Collection will be on display to read and enjoy.

Illustration workshop with artist Dub Leffler 11am – 12pmJoin artist and author of Once There was A Boy for a fun illustration workshop. Participate in a range of games and learn to create some funny characters in this workshop. Most suited to ages 4-8.

Tent programStorytelling with Dr Anita Heiss 11.15am and 1.15pm Award winning Aboriginal author Dr Anita Heiss presents a storytelling session that kids are sure to enjoy, followed by a book signing.

Dancestry with NAISDA 11.45am and 2.40pm The team from NAISDA will teach traditional Aboriginal dance on our Dancestry Circle.

Culture Workshops with Matt Doyle 12.05pm – 12.35pm Cultural educator Matt Doyle will bring his unique storytelling ability, cultural knowledge and dance to the Kids’ Culture area.

Bush Tucker Session 12.40pm – 1.10pm Learn about bush tucker from Jess Sinnott.

Dancestry with Jax and Daz from Muggera Dancers 1.45pm – 2pm After learning a dance routine of hip hop moves on the Main Stage, kids are invited to take part in a cultural dance lesson in the Dancestry Circle.

Language Workshop 2.05pm – 2.35pm Deb Lennis will teach the National Anthem, some common words and a children’s song in the Dharawal language.

Art Workshops 11am – 3pm Torres Strait Islander artist, dancer and choreographer Gail Mabo shares her painting talents with the kids in the Kids’ Art and Games area.

NRL Clinic 11am – 3pm The NRL One Community team will be running drills in the Kids’ Art and Games area, including skills workshops and pass the ball competition.

AFL Clinic 11am – 3pm Come and join the AFL for our NAIDOC Kick to Kick and learn more about our Indigenous game.

Soccer Clinic 11am – 3pm Sydney FC will bring their MiniRoos program to teach soccer skills and tricks to kids of all ages.

Sydney Kings 11am – 3pm Test your shooting skills on the Sydney Kings’ inflatable basketball hoop.

Australian Rugby Union 11am – 3pm Come and meet Olympic 7s rugby players and learn first hand rugby skills including pass the ball competition.

Bonza Bike Tours Get pedalling and explore Sydney’s rich Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander past in this popular tour. Part of NAIDOC Week celebrations, this 90 minute guided ride will feature sights of cultural interest throughout the city and take you on a journey steeped in history.
