FROM ZERMATT WITH LOVE
ZERMATT.
UNPLUGGED.
ZERMATT. The Valais four–thousanders are enthroned around and in the mid-dle of it all are picturesque Walser houses lined next to each other. The sun shines down from above, more often here than elsewhere, and guests come up from below to enjoy it and the snow, the mountains, the village. Here you drive up to go down. Here you switch off to recharge.
UNPLUGGED. Here the music plays – during 5 days, on 17 stages and at over 100 concerts, unamplified and real. Here the audience and artists are closer than rarely otherwise – connected by music and connected to nature. With concerts that play outside and against a breathtaking backdrop – sometimes up in the mountains, sometimes in the middle of the village. With a line-up as varied and first rate, and with musical highlights – from Dido to Gérard Depar-dieu. From grilled cervelat to savory Gommer pastry with a truffle scent: Good food is considered good form. And where local gastronomy meets warm hospi-tality, good taste sets the precedent.

«Everybody will remember me» – singt sie in ihrem gleichnamigen Song.
Zermatt in drei Worten?Friedlich. Schön. Toblerone.
«I don’t know of a woman who doesn’t have to renegotiate her place in the world every day.» The musician from Geneva brings a breath of fresh air to the Swiss music scene and the Valais mountains. Her music – a blend of reg-gae, soul, hip-hop and R'n'B – has already garnered her many awards: Best Act Roman-die of the Swiss Music Award 2018, Artist to Watch from SRF Virus, Best Talent from SRF 3. But it doesn't come out of nowhere – it's work coupled with a passion for music, ambi-tion and a whole lot of self-discipline.
The music of Danitsa is fresh, powerful, strong and above all positive. Through her mother, with roots in Chad and Congo, and her father of Serbian-Spanish descent, she came into contact with music early on. Also with the fact that the music business is tough and the market very competitive. But Danitsa remains true to herself and that makes her as a musi-
cian approachable, strong and real.
Danitsa is our 2020 campaign face. The hip-hop musician has never been heard un-plugged. For the festival she is bringing an acoustic set onstage for the first time, facing the challenges of unamplified performance in acoustic form. «Everybody will remember me» – she sings in her eponymous song. We are sure we will.
Danitsa Unplugged – how does that sound? I am happy to be able to perform at the festi-val, because it gives me the opportunity to share the songs of my next album exclusively with the audience and to perform on stage with a newly-formed live band.
How do your songs come about?I am like a sponge: I like to observe, I take in other people and what is happening around
me to express it through a melody, a text, a universe.
Soundtrack of your life? There’s my playlist «Vibes by D» on Spotify – tune in.
How do you assert yourself as a woman in the music world? How do men assert themselves in the music world?
Where do you feel at home?Geneva, Zurich and Paris.
Zermatt in three words?Peaceful. Beautiful. Toblerone.
THE WORLD NEEDS MORE STORY TELLERS, DREAMERS, CHANGE MAKERS & ACTION TAKERS.— MEHR VON IHR. DANITSA. UNSER GESICHT 2020.

«We love playing unplugged. We write a lot of the music acoustically, so it’s special for us when people
can hear the songs the way we first did. We’ve played across Switzerland since we first started, and we love our
fans here. We are excited to see some old friends as well as new faces.»
JACK SAVORETTI17. APRIL | 19.30 | EARLY @ THE ALEX
Was gefällt dir daran?
What does it mean to you to play unplugged? What is the special challenge?Zermatt Unplugged is one of the most unique and special festivals I have had the privilege to perform at. And it is one I hope to keep coming back to for many years in the future. Not only for the location, which is unlike any other, the hosts and people working at the festival that treat us so well but also for the audience. They are there for the music and because of all the reasons above the line-up is always spectacular. That means me, my band and crew have to play our best shows as the level is incredible.
You have been to Zermatt Unplugged several times before. What do you like about it? Yes, this will be the third time I play the festi-val and it feels like coming home now. The town is magical and during the festival it feels like it only exists for us. From the shows to the jam sessions the whole town becomes about music.
At the festival artists and audience are very close to each other. Do you like that? It is incredible to see such a music loving audi-ence. They come to listen to the songs, the music and musical perfection. That is what makes it so special and such a joy to play. You have to come prepared to do something dif-ferent and something they will not hear again. That is the reason for doing what we do.

«I like the setting in the mountains. It’s a very primal feeling mixed with fun. Zermatt is like Christmas without the Santa stuff but is cozy and intimate. And playing unplugged always makes me nervous as it’s so stripped back, all you have are the songs and the performance, it’s not somewhere you can hide. But I normally sing better when the pressure is on!»
«IT ALWAYS FEELS SPECIAL TO PLAY THE SONGS IN A MORE RAW FORM AS THAT IS HOW MOST OF THEM WERE WRITTEN IN THE FIRST PLACE – SO IT BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF HOW SOME SONGS STARTED.» — DIDO

«As a performer one is attempting to shorten the distance between the song and the listener. For some, intimacy is the very currency of their work, for others it's distance; some performers profess, some confess and some mumble vagaries into the hostile darkness. Playing acoustically strips a song back, tests its mettle, demands absolute engagement and concentration. Some songs are made for this, they shine brighter for it, other songs are conceived and imagined flamboyant and gregarious and so stripping them back can expose their frail and flimsy architecture or disingenuous emotional arc. I’m happy to play in the intimate environment of Zermatt Unplugged, I look forward to the mountain air.»
«I LOVE PLAYING WITH MY BAND, AS WELL, BUT THERE’S AN INTIMACY AND A CONNECTION I CAN CREATE IN A SOLO UNPLUGGED SHOW THAT’S VERY UNIQUE. IT’S LIKE THE AUDIENCE AND I ARE JUST HANGING OUT TOGETHER.»— RICHARD MARX

«If you play unplugged, the songs cannot simply be taken over 1 to 1 - that means you have to handle the songs so they also sound good unplugged. When you get that close to the audience, you feel a com-pletely different energy and you also get a completely different, much closer and more honest feedback. I look forward to a great evening and look forward to playing many of the songs unplugged, which you may not necessarily play on a large festival stage. Here, even the quiet tones surface.»

«Playing unplugged, actually I haven't done it so often. But I guess the sound will come a little bit closer to original songs, how they were written in the first place. I imagine it will feel like a very homely festival.»

Was gefällt dir daran?
What does it mean to you to play unplugged? What is the special challenge?Unplugged does not mean less music it means the rebirth of a song in the spirit of in-timacy. It is like rewriting songs in the pre-sence of thousands of people. You are still in-spired by the same things that inspired the first time you wrote the song, but you look for a new language or voice to tell the story.
You have been to Zermatt Unplugged several times before. What do you like about it? I’m a huge fan of the Zermatt Unplugged. The atmosphere in the village and in the venues is unique and I love it. The best thing I can de-scribe is the feeling of walking through the streets and hearing music come out of every bar and restaurant on the mountains and in the valley. Like any festival there are so many artists you want to see and hear and some-times you just follow the crowd on the street and see where it leads you.
At the festival artists and audience are very close to each other. Do you like that? I think the nearness to the audience is impor-tant, a normal concert is about the spectacle, the big lighting show, the abundance of sound is all feeding an energy that people expect and deserve. Unplugged is about creating an intimacy that you can nearly touch, and the audience play an even bigger role than usual. Their ability to listen and be a part of the mood is the key. I’m hoping that there will be magic in the room on that night!

«For me, playing unplugged means to re-member a part of my personal music career, back to the roots, so to speak. Unplugged concerts always have something very direct and the nearness to the audience at such gigs is great.»

«PLAYING UNPLUGGED FOR ME IS ALL ABOUT RAWNESS AND HAVING NO FILTERS. IT’S SCARY BUT YET I FOUND IT TO BE SO REAL. I LOVE TO PLAY UNPLUGGED WHEN-EVER I GET THE CHANCE!»— JAKE ISAAC
«If I had to choose I would always play unplugged. I think it’s the best opportunity for the performer to present their songs in their purest form, to put them out there naked and exposed. For the audience it’s a special experience to see a different side of the songs they love, when you strip away all the distractions and clever tricks of the band and production, the music becomes raw and, for me, more moving. Which is all I want from music, to be moved.»
«What you hear is what you get – there's no trickery, no effects, just the instruments and the voice as it is. It also allows me to really explore the space of a room, how far can I reach? How close can I bring people in? How intimate is too intimate? You get to push the boundaries a little and I like that a lot.»
«WHAT YOU HEAR IS WHAT YOU GET.»— JAMIE LAWSON

AT HOME WITH …
PHILIPP POISEL16. & 17. APRIL | 18.15 AT HOME WITH … | HEINZ JULEN LOFTPRESENTED BY BKW
A new chapter for the location with the exciting history: The loft was planned, designed and built in the mid-1990s in the context of the construction of «Into the Hotel» by the Zermatt artist Heinz Julen, who is now President of Friends of Zermatt Unplugged. In the first years the loft had already captivated numerous artists, such as Robbie Wil-liams, who wrote his album «Sing When You're Winning» there, or Jon Lord of Deep Purple, who enjoyed giving a private concert on the Steinway. From 2000 the loft was the home of Heinz Julen for 10 years. During this time the paths of Heinz Julen and Thomas Sterchi, founder of Zermatt Unplugged, crossed, and the loft did its part to in-spire the founding of the festival.
Since then the loft is open to new guests and, with its architecture and warm atmosphere, offers the perfect setting for intimate unplugged experiences by exciting musicians. As it is in April – the loft then be-comes the home of German pop-poet Philipp Poisel, who has been onstage for 10 years and is a true artist when it comes to captivating the audience live.

«We became involved about seven years ago. And we hustled our way in and decided that Zermatt Unplugged needed a little bit of jazz. We now play in the Mont Cervin Palace, a complete pop-up Ronnie Scott’s Club. They created it based on this one in London.
17 stages that couldn't be more different. The Zermatt Unplugged ad-venture leads from a tranquil village center at 1620 m up to a moun-tain range and stage panorama – with the best view of the Matter-horn, the glacier landscape and the parade of peaks of the Valais Alps.
At almost 4’000 meters above sea level, the Matterhorn ski paradise is the highest ski region in the Alps. Between the concerts, 360 kilo-meters of slopes lure with sun and snow – and then again the stages at the musical altitude with great views and atmosphere. A relaxed time under the Matterhorn sun. Enjoy, ride down, dive and soak in.

In Zermatt 17 restaurants have combined 242 Gault-Millau points and five Michelin stars. They set standards for 200 restaurants in the vil-lage and for gastronomy throughout Switzerland. Nowhere else can you find such a high concentration of top chefs. This also inspires Zer-matt Unplugged.
During the festival we celebrate a festival of culinary diversity. The Taste Village shows what makes for good food: Regional and sustain-ably produced products are prepared with sophistication. Fresh ideas awaken the appetite for more. Swiss tradition and international life-style form the perfect mix for alpine enjoyment in front of and in a beautiful festival setting.
Eat, drink and think different.
That’s what we thought too! Our new wine lounge with a wide range of regional and foreign, organic and biodynamic wines opens this year in the Foyer Marquee – for occasional drinkers and connoisseurs – the wine glass is ready. The team from Smith & Smith and the Swiss Hotel Management School Lucerne will be happy to help you find the right delight to fit the mood. A varied range of meals is also provided.

LANGJÄHRIGES VERTRAUEN
LONG STANDING TRUST
Die Raiffeisen Gruppe ist die führende Schweizer Retailbank und
seit 2010 Main Partner des Zermatt Unplugged – eine Dekade
also schon. Zusammen ist man gewachsen und geniesst gegenseitiges
Vertrauen.
The Raiffeisen Group is the leading Swiss retail bank and has been
a main partner of Zermatt Unplugged since 2010 – already a decade.
The partnership has grown together and enjoys mutual trust. With
Michael Mattle, Senior Marketing Manager, Concerts and Events,
we look back at the past few years.
Why are you a partner of Zermatt Unplugged? As part of Raiffeisen MemberPlus we offer our members concerts and events with up to 50 % discount. Our goal is to present a high-quality offering throughout Switzerland. Of course Zermatt Unplugged couldn’t be missing. The great cooperation with the local Raiffeisen-bank Mischabel-Matterhorn on site and the organizers of the festival also contribute to the long-term partnership.
Raiffeisen is one of the first partners of the festival – what are the success factors of a good partnership? In short: flexibility, reliability, mutual trust, inno-vation, further development and finding prag-matic solutions. These requirements are com-pletely covered by the organizers of the festival, to whom I would like to express a great thank you.
Raiffeisen has developed over the years – as has Zermatt Unplugged. How do you perceive this development?Further development as an organizer as well as a sponsor is imperative. Nevertheless, I would like to break a lance here to consciously preserve the good. In today's fast-paced world, a lot of new things are being tackled and the tried and tested is forgotten. Zermatt Un-plugged has found this balance, be it by main-taining the secondary stages with great ta-lents or by redesigning the Taste Village. When I look back, there are moments that remain un-forgettable. For example, when a midnight jam session with Ms. Lauryn Hill came up sponta-neously. Or to meet Katie Melua at the Verni-ssage by chance and have a casual chat with her. This is possible thanks to the ambience at Zermatt Unplugged.
How does the future look for Raiffeisen and Zermatt Unplugged?Raiffeisen has now been a partner of Zermatt Unplugged for 10 years. It is difficult to look into the future in the current environment. Show business is in constant change and is chang-ing faster than ever. We will face these challen-ges together with the organizer.
What are you most looking forward to at this festival edition?I have great expectations for the jazz sessions at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club. The sound in combination with the set-up in Soho style is exactly my taste.

HUBLOT LOVES ZERMATT
HUBLOT LOVES ZERMATT
«Be the first, be unique, be different».
Was ist dein Festival Ritual?
Magisch. Unbeschreiblich schön. Persönlich.
Hublot loves Zermatt – warum?
«Be the first, be unique, be different.» With this philosophy, Hublot has
established an excellent reputation in the highly competitive market
for high-quality timepieces in just a few decades. Hublot has been
supporting Zermatt Unplugged as a main partner since 2015. Hublot has been running a boutique in
Zermatt since 2016, where they also have artist receptions during the
festival. We spoke to Corinne Stöcklin, Sales and Marketing Manager
Switzerland, about her connection to Zermatt and the festival.
Patrick Chanton (Brand Director Switzerland &
Eastern Europe), Jessie J & Corinne Stöcklin
WIR SETZEN NICHT NUR AUF GUTE MUSIK, SONDERN AUCH AUF NACHHALTIGE ENERGIELÖSUNGEN
Why is Hublot a partner of Zermatt Unplugged?Hublot loves art! As the main sponsor of Zer-matt Unplugged, Hublot underscores the ex-isting close connection to music and Zermatt as destination. For us the festival combines the most diverse musical worlds with the wonderful atmosphere of the village in the middle of the Valais Alps.
What is your festival ritual? As soon as I arrive in Zermatt and set up for the festival week with great anticipation, I treat myself to a few quiet minutes and take the traditional Matterhorn photo. A magical moment every year; the Matterhorn and Zer-matt, dressed in a beautiful Unplugged vil-lage. Before I go to the Marquee Stage in the evening, I consciously enjoy the atmosphere in the Taste Village. With all the lights, the Un-plugged decoration and the music – a won-derful feeling of having arrived in a very spe-cial and magical world.
Describe the festival in three words?Magical. Indescribably beautiful. Personal.
Hublot loves Zermatt – why?Hublot has had a close relationship with the Valais mountain paradise of Zermatt for a long time. We are partners of the tourism bu-reaus and Zermatt Bergbahnen and have a chalet boutique on site. There is much to tell and many stories in the region. And with our Big Bang Zermatt we proudly make a contri-bution to this cultural asset.
Which artist do you remember well and why?Jack Savoretti! He came to our chalet bou-tique for the watch presentation. So persona-ble, down to earth, and you felt his pride in being part of Zermatt Unplugged.
Which artist were you most surprised by?Jessie J 2019! The atmosphere in the mar-quee was unique and she touched my heart telling of her stories.
Your unplugged highlight?Boy George & Culture Club last year. And the next day he was sitting incognito in front of us in Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in Mont Cervin and spontaneously sang a few songs. A «money can't buy» event and a sensation that I will never forget.
WE NOT ONLY STAND FOR GOOD MUSIC, BUT ALSO FOR SUSTAINABLE ENERGY SOLUTIONS
A large festival up in the mountains with thousands of visitors needs additional energy. But where should the electricity come from? How can energy efficiency be increased? BKW has been a main partner of the festival for four years: As a large and international energy and in-frastructure service provider, BKW is strongly committed to solutions in various business areas for a livable future.
The common goal is clear: to continually reduce the ecological foot-print. This is why Zermatt Unplugged obtains 100 percent clean elec-tricity from certified hydropower. Attention is also paid to waste sepa-ration in the visitor areas and recyclable tableware is used. BKW and Zermatt Unplugged want to «rethink, rework together.»

«OBWOHL DAS FESTIVAL NOCH JUNG IST, GEHÖRT ES SCHON FAST ZU UNS WIE DAS MATTERHORN.» — DANIEL LUGGEN | KURDIREKTOR ZERMATT
«ALTHOUGH THE FESTIVAL IS STILL YOUNG, IT ALMOST BELONGS TO US LIKE THE MATTERHORN.»
Ohne Zermatt, kein Zermatt Unplugged.
Without Zermatt, no Zermatt Unplugged. From the very beginning Zermatt – Matterhorn has supported the festival, is also a destination host, invites a musi-cal highlight annually to its home. What challenges this role presents – more on this in conversation with Daniel Luggen, Director of Tourism of Zermatt.
Why are you a partner of Zermatt Unplugged?Zermatt Unplugged contributes to influenc-ing the positive image of the destination, it in-creases awareness and helps to bring many guests to the Matterhorn village once more at the end of the season.
What does the festival mean for the destination? How does it feel to be a location host?We are proud to be able to put on such a great festival here with us. Although the festi-val is still young, it almost belongs to us like the Matterhorn.
Destination in times of change – what trends are emerging for and in Zermatt? Our guests appreciate the quality that is of-fered to them in Zermatt. In order to meet the high standards, we are constantly develop-ing. For example, we sense that our guests are increasingly relying on information digital-ly. Therefore, we have developed the «Mat-
terhorn» app, which offers a useful informa-tion platform, an online shop for tickets but also for table reservations and much more.
Where do you see Zermatt and the festival in 10 years?Just like our destination, the festival always proves to be innovative. Although it retains the tried and tested, it always comes up with new ideas. This strategy keeps a festival fresh and will continue to help Zermatt Un-plugged be successful in the future.
Your Unplugged highlight? The young, talented musicians on the stages on the mountain against the backdrop of our gigantic mountain landscape, plus the many happy people – that makes the skiing experi-ence perfect. There’s not a better way to end our winter season than these five days.
