PV Technical Sales Certification Requirements

I. General Eligibility Requirements for the PV Technical Sales Certification

InordertobeeligiblefortheNABCEPPVTechnicalSalesCertification,applicantsmustsatisfythefollowingrequirements:

• Beatleast18yearsofage;

• CompletetheOSHA10HourConstructionTrain-ingCourseClass(acertificateofcoursecomple-tionmustbesubmittedwithapplication);

• Satisfyatleastone(1)ofthequalifyingcertifica-tioneligibilitycategories(QualifyingCategories)identifiedbelow;

• CompletetheNABCEPPVTechnicalSalesCertificationExaminationApplication(printedoronlineapplication);

• AccepttheNABCEPCodeofEthics&StandardsofConduct;

• PayapplicableApplicationfees;and,

• AchieveapassingscoreontheNABCEPPVTechnicalSalesCertificationExamination.

II. PV Technical Sales Certification Eligibility Categories

TheNABCEPBoardofDirectorsandPVTechni-calSalesTechnicalCommitteehaveestablishedthefollowingseven(7)QualifyingCategoriesfortheNABCEPPVTechnicalSalesCertification.Applicantsmustsatisfyatleastone(1)ofthefollowingcategoriesinordertoqualifyforcertification.

A.Qualifying Category 1

• Atleastsixty(60)cumulativehoursoftrainingdirectlyrelatedtothesubjectsidentifiedintheNABCEPPVTechnicalSalesCertificationJobTaskAnalysis;

• Verifiablesalesexperience,includingthecomple-tionofatleastfour(4)solarPVsystemsalesproposalswithinthetwelve(12)monthperiod

priortoapplyingfortheNABCEPPVTechnicalSalesCertification;and,

• AchieveapassingscoreontheNABCEPPVEntryLevelExamination.

B.Qualifying Category 2

• Atleastthirty-two(32)cumulativehoursoftrain-ingdirectlyrelatedtothesubjectsidentifiedintheNABCEPPVTechnicalSalesJobTaskAnalysis;

• Verifiablesalesexperience,includingthecomple-tionofatleasteight(8)solarPVsystemsalespro-posalswithinthetwenty-four(24)monthperiodpriortoapplyingfortheNABCEPPVTechnicalSalesCertification;and,

• AchieveapassingscoreontheNABCEPPVEntryLevelExamination.

C.Qualifying Category 3

• AssociatesDegreefromanaccreditededucationalinstitutioninrenewableenergytechnologyorrelatedfieldofstudy;

• Verifiablesalesexperience,includingthecomple-tionofatleastfour(4)solarPVsystemsalespro-posalswithinthetwelve(12)monthperiodpriortoapplyingfortheNABCEPPVTechnicalSalesCertification;and,

• AchieveapassingscoreontheNABCEPPVEntryLevelExamination.

D.Qualifying Category 4

• BachelorsDegreefromanaccreditededucationalinstitution;and,

• Verifiablesalesexperience,includingthecomple-tionofatleastfour(4)solarPVsystemsalespro-posalswithinthetwelve(12)monthperiodpriortoapplyingfortheNABCEPPVTechnicalSalesCertification.

E.Qualifying Category 5

• CurrentlycredentialedasaNABCEPCertifiedSolarPVInstalleringoodstanding;or,

NOTE: A minimum of thirty (30) hours of additional train-ing in non-installation aspects of the PV Technical Sales Job Task Analysis is strongly recommended.

F.Qualifying Category 6

• CurrentlylicensedasanelectricianintheStateinwhichtheapplicantperformshis/heroccupation-alactivities;and,

• AchieveapassingscoreontheNABCEPPVEntryLevelExamination.

NOTE: A minimum of thirty (30) hours of additional train-ing in all aspects of the PV Technical Sales Job Task Analysis is strongly recommended.

G.Qualifying Category 7

• Verifiablesalesexperience,includingthecomple-tionofatleasttwenty(20)solarPVsystemsalesproposalswithinthesixty(60)monthperiodpriortoapplyingfortheNABCEPPVTechnicalSalesCertification;and,

• Atleastfive(5)yearsofcumulative,documentedsolarPVsystemssales-relatedexperience.

NOTE: A minimum of thirty (30) hours of additional train-ing in all aspects of the PV Technical Sales Job Task Analysis is strongly recommended.

III. Verifiable Sales Experience/ Definitions and Documentation Supporting Experience

A. Definitions

1.VerifiableSalesExperience

Verifiablesalesexperience=ActivelyengagedinsolarPVsystemssales-relatedactivities,includingthecompletionofthenumberofsolarPVsystempropos-alsrequiredbytheapplicant’sQualifyingCategory.See,SectionII.

Foreachofthefour(4)solarPVsystemproposalstobecompletedineachtwelve(12)monthperiodpriortoapplyingforNABCEPPVTechnicalSalesCertifica-tion,thefollowingrequirementsapply:

• Atleasttwo(2)musthaveresultedincompletedsalesandinstallation;

• Atleast2mustrelatetosystemslargerthan2kWDC(peak);

• Atleast1oftheinstallationsmustbeasystemthatisgridconnected;and,

• Nomorethan1proposalmaybesubmittedtoarelativeorsomeoneresidingattheapplicant’saddress.Thisproposalmusthaveresultedinacompletedsalesandinstallation.

Qualifying Category 7Applicantmustsubmitdocumentationshowingatleast20proposalscompletedina60-monthperiodpriortoapplyingforcertification,includingatleast:10resultingincompletedsalesandinstallation;10thatrelatetosystemslargerthan2kW(peak);and,5thataregridconnected.

2.SolarPVSystemsSales-RelatedActivities

Engaginginthesaleand/ordesignofsolarPVsys-tems,includingbutnotlimitedto,individualsem-ployedassalesmanagers,siteanalysts,systemdesign-ers,technicalsupportpersonnel,andprojectfinanceanalysts.

3.SolarPVSystemsSalesProposals

Salesproposalsmustincludethefollowinginforma-tion:proposedPVsystemsizeinkW;evidenceofashadeanalysis;theamountofkWhthePVsystemisexpectedtoproduceannually;therevenuethattheelectricitygeneratedwillproduce;thetotalcostofthesystem;anyincentiveortaxbenefitsthatmaybeappliedtothetotalcost.Additionalinformationmayincludetheinternalrateofreturn(IRR),paybackpe-riod,cashflowoverthelifeofthesystem,non-finan-cialbenefits,andanyincomethatwillbegainedfromrenewableenergycredits.

B. Documentation of Verifiable Sales Experience

1.ProposalDocumentation

ForeachoftheQualifyingCategoriesrequiringverifi-ablesalesexperience,anapplicantmustsubmittheidentifiednumberofsalesproposalsforsolarPVsys-tems,consistentwiththerequirementsofSectionIII.A.AllsolarPVsystemsclaimedmustbeaccompaniedbyacompleteandaccuratecopyoftheoriginalproposal.See,definitionof“proposal”inSectionIII.A.3.Iftheapplicant’snameisnotidentifiedonaproposal,then

thatproposalmustbeaccompaniedbyaletterfromtheapplicant’semployerorsupervisorstatingthattheapplicantwasthepersonwhoperformedaleadroleinthedevelopmentoftheproposal,orheldapositionofresponsibilityinreviewingandapprovingthepro-posaldevelopedbyothers.

2.PermitsandInspectionRecords

IfthesolarPVsystemidentifiedinaproposalhasbeeninstalled,theapplicantmustsubmitelectricalpermitsandinspectionrecords.Ifpermitsarenotavailable,anapplicantmaysubmit:

• AsignedletterfromthecustomerstatingthatthepurchasedsolarPVsystemmettheirexpectations;or,

• Asignedletterfromtheapplicant’semployerorsupervisordocumentingtheapplicant’srolesandresponsibilitiesinthesalesprocess,alongwiththeoutcomeofthesalesprocess.

Applicantsmayalsoattachphotographsoftheso-larPVsystemassupplementaldocumentation.Allproposalsandrelatedproprietaryinformationwillbetreatedasconfidential.

Whencompletingtheapplication,applicantswillbeaskedtodescribethescopeofworkhe/shewasresponsibleforoneachinstallation.NABCEPreservestherighttocontactsystemowners/operators,permit-tingauthorities,andresponsiblecontractorstoverifyworklistedintheApplication.TheNABCEPApplica-tionReviewCommitteewillmakedecisionsregardingapplicanteligibilitybasedontheApplicationinforma-tionanddocumentationsubmittedinsupportoftheApplication.

IV. Training Requirement for the PV Technical Sales Certification

ApplicantsapplyingthroughQualifyingCategories1and2mustsubmitdocumentationsupportingtherequiredcumulativehoursoftrainingdirectlyrelatedtothesubjectsidentifiedintheNABCEPPVTechnicalSalesJobTaskAnalysis.

A. Acceptable Training

NABCEPwillaccepttrainingthatmeetsthefollowingrequirements:

1.FormalTrainingFormat.Thetrainingprogrammusthaveaformaltrainingformat,whichincludesateach-er-studentstructure,i.e.,astudentandaninstructingsource.Acceptabletrainingformatsmayinclude:

a.In-person/classroomtrainingcoursesledbyaninstructorand/ordiscussionleader;or,

b.Activitiesinwhichastudentisengagedinaplannedlearningevent,receivesfeedbackconcerninghis/herprogress,andthestudent’sprogressismoni-tored.Insomecases,suchactivitiesmaybedistancelearning,i.e.,thestudentisseparatedfromfacultyandotherstudents.Examplesincludecomputer-assistedinstruction,interactivevideo/CD/DVD,and/orweb-sitelearning.

2.TrainingCoversPVTechnicalSalesJobTaskAnaly-sisSubjects

ThetrainingmustdirectlyrelatetothesubjectsidentifiedintheNABCEPPVTechnicalSalesJobTaskAnalysis.

B. Acceptable Training Providers

Acceptabletrainingprovidersinclude,butarenotlimitedto:

1.Aneducationalinstitutionaccreditedbyanaccredi-tationorganizationrecognizedbytheU.S.DepartmentofEducation(e.g.,universitiesandcommunitycol-leges)orasimilarCanadiangovernmentagency;

2.Independentrenewableenergytrainingprograms.NOTE:NABCEPrecommendsthatapplicantsconsid-ertrainingcoursesaccreditedbyIRECundertheISPQStandard,ortaughtbyinstructorscertifiedbyIREC.Pleasevisitwww.IRECusa.orgforfullcourselistings;

3.ApprenticeshiptrainingprogramsrecognizedbytheU.S.DepartmentofLabororequivalentprograms,orthoserecognizedbyaCanadiangovernmentagency;

4.TrainingprogramsapprovedbyStateorProvincialContractorLicensingBoards;and,

5.Vocationaltechnicaltrainingprograms.

AlthoughadditionaltrainingisnotrequiredforQualifyingCategories3through7,NABCEPstronglyencouragestraininginallaspectsofthePVTechnicalSalesJobTaskAnalysis.Suchtrainingmayassistap-plicantsinachievingapassingscoreonthePVTechni-calSalesCertificationExamination.

VI. About the NABCEP PV Entry Level Examination Requirement

QualifyingCategories1,2,3,and6requireanapplicanttosuccessfullypasstheNABCEPPVEntryLevelEx-amination,whichdemonstratesabasicunderstandingofPVsystemdesignandinstallation.TheNABCEPPVEntryLevelExaminationisnotacertificationexam.

TrainingcoursesdirectlyrelatedtopreparationfortheNABCEPPVEntryLevelExaminationwillnotcounttowardstherequisitecumulativetraininghoursforQualifyingCategories1and2unlesssubjectsidenti-fiedinthePVTechnicalSalesJobTaskAnalysis(JTA)arecoveredbysuchcourses.InorderforsuchtrainingcourseworktobeacceptedbyNABCEP,theapplicantmustsubmitdocumentationsignedbythecoursein-structororprogramadministratordetailingthematerialcoveredandtimespentcoveringPVTechnicalSalesJTAsubjects.See,SectionV.A.
