Redefining TDR Technology

Time Domain Reflectometers (TDRs)have traditionally allowed servicetechnicians to perform basic lengthand fault measurements required forinstallation and maintenance.

Now, Agilent Technologies hasreinvented the TDR to simplify use,expand the range and reach ofapplications, and increase portability.The TDR module can be used with theService Advisor tablet or TelecomToolkit undercradle. Both platformsprovide one-touch software support,color graphs and plotting, andenhanced integration with relatedtesting functions.

The TDR module provides improvedperformance with any type of metalliccabling, including traditional twistedpair, CATV coax and Cat 5/6 LANwiring. Agilent’s unique TDR technol-ogy provides service personnel with asignificant distance measurementadvantage.

Intelligent TDR Testing

The Service Advisor Tablet and TDRplug-in module combination delivers aflexible, lightweight, battery-poweredsolution for cable testing. TheTelecom Toolkit/TDR moduleconfiguration allows organizations toprovide users of the Internet Advisornetwork analyzer with TDR testingcapabilities, and extends modulesharing and usage throughoutinstallation and maintenance staffs.

Test selection and set-up is easy,thanks to the tablet’s bright colortouchscreen. Tests and results can bestored and recalled with a touch of anon-screen button, and high-resolutiondisplay capabilities simplify visualanalysis of captured waveforms andcomparison profiles.

The TDR module speeds tasks, fromsimple measurement of cable spans,detection of open and short circuits,and detection of impedance changes,to measurement of bridge taps forDSL line qualification.

Up to 50 waveforms can be storedand recalled for comparison tocaptured test profiles. This recallfeature can also be used to evaluateperformance changes or degradationin the same span over time. Startingand ending ranges can be selectedindependently, allowing specificcable sections to be progressivelyselected for fault isolation. Themodule’s zoom feature permits usersto select and magnify onscreendisplay of a specific segment of acaptured waveform, to examineanomalies in detail. The TDRmodule’s expanded granularitysupports capture of up to 4,000 datapoints, providing a rich database fordiagnosing potential cabling prob-lems.

A built-in cable database allows theuser to automatically enter thevelocity of propagation (VoP) valueappropriate for the cable beingtested. This database may be editedor expanded to include specific typesand brands of cabling.

Movable on-screen cursors can beplaced at waveform peaks toprecisely calculate absolute andrelative distances between events, aswell as time between events.

Finally, the TDR module alsosupports crosstalk measurements,return loss and reflection coefficientsto assist telco and LAN technicians inevaluating potential service interfer-ence between cables bundled withinbinder groups.
