Reading

In the pack this week there is an extract of the BFG and an extract from a non-fiction book about homes. Children should read the text and answer the question using the text to support their answer. A further extract is given in this pack also to encourage the love of reading.

Writing

This week pupils will need to write a biography about one of the famous people provided in the pack. In the pack there is an example of a biography and a success criteria that children should use to support their writing of the biography. Further research to gather more information to support their writing should be done.

Maths

This week is a new maths unit of measure. Children will be reading scales to say how much roughly the mass of an item is. Children will be measuring in g, kg, mm and litres. Children will order items from heaviest to lightest using the scale and answering one step word problems about measure. Try and take no more than 30 minutes on the arithmetic test to maintain your fluency in maths.

Spelling Children should practise the words using the look, cover, say method. Choose two words from the list and find their definition and then place these new words in a sentence.

The wider Curriculum

This week children will need to complete session 4 in the science booklet. Session 4- how do skeletons vary between animals? Children will be looking at different types of skeletons in animals and discussing the advantages of each type. In topic this week children need to complete session 4 and 5 in the workbook. Session 4- where have people chosen to settle in the UK? And session 5- what are the countries in the UK? Children will be looking at the specific characteristics of each area that make it good for settling. PSE- this week children are encourage to think about change. How change can be good and hard and the feelings change can produce.

Writing This week you will be writing a biography about either Thomas Edison the scientist, Mae Jemison the astronaut or Katherine Johnson the mathematician.

A biography is an account of someone’s life written by someone else. So, for this task you will be writing about your chosen person’s life using information provided and

further information of your own research (using the websites suggested on the learning log).

Your biography should include:

Written in the past tense Went, wrote, wanted, saw, tired Written using third person pronouns He, she, they, himself, their, them, it Start with an opening statement to introduce who you are writing about. Say why they are famous/ important, one major event. Write about significant events in the persons lives in chronological order. Where and when were they born, schooling/ family, first jobs, inspiration, first major achievements.

Each paragraph should be about one part of their lives.

Closing statement saying how the person will be remembered.

He/ She/ They will always be known as ….

Sentence starters to use in your biography

At the age of As a child When he/she A few years later Sadly In January 1988 Unfortunately During Whilst this was happening As he/she grew From the time Even though Eventually Many months later Soon afterwards He/ She will be most remembered for Years passed before Her/ his dedication to In her/his final years After he/ she retired/ died

Example biography

Usain Bolt Usain St.Leo Bolt once said, ‘When I was young, I didn’t really think about anything other than sports.’ Whilst at secondary school, Usain focused on sprinting, which led him to win his first high school championships medal. Since then he has set new world records, overcome injuries, won many medals and become a hero in his home country of Jamaica.

Usain was born on 21st August 1986, in Jamaica. As a child, he really enjoyed playing football and cricket.

Bolt took part in his first track whilst at primary school, however, at that time he preferred playing cricket. In an interview, he once said that if he hadn’t become a sprinter, he would have loved to be a fast bowler like his cricketing hero, Waqar Younis.

At high school, Usain focused on sprinting and won his first silver medal in the 2001 high school championships. His talent caught the eye of former Jamaican Olympic sprinter Pablo McNeil, who went to become his coach. Pablo would sometimes get frustrated with Bolt as he did not always take his training seriously and liked to play practical jokes.

The 2001 world youth championships were Usain’s first appearance on the world stage. He did not win any medals, but he did set a new personal best in the 200m race. The world junior championships came next and it was here that Bolt became the youngest world junior gold medalist.

In 2004, Usain became the first junior sprinter to run 200m in under 20 seconds. It was then that he turned professional and was given a place on the Jamaican Olympic team. He went to the Olympic games in Athens in 2004 but a leg injury stopped him from winning any medals.

As the years passed by, Usain took his sport more seriously and began to train harder to win events. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics games, he broke more world records and won gold in the 100m, 200m and relay events. This was followed by the world championships in Berlin, where he improved his record times.

Bolt competed in the 100m, 200m and relay at the London 2012 Olympic games and won gold in all three events. After the races, a fellow runner said, ‘There is no doubt he is the greatest sprinter of all time.’

During the 2016 Rio Olympics, Bolt yet again won gold in all three races and was also awarded the ‘triple-triple’ meaning he has won gold in 3 events in 3 Olympics games. However, this amazing achievement didn’t last long as in 2017, Bolt and his team mates were striped of the fold medals from the 100m relay in the Beijing games due to one of his teammates being disqualified.

In 2017, at the world athletics champions, Bolt’s success didn’t continue. He won a bronze medal in one event and in another, he collapsed on the track with a hamstring injury and had to be helped across the finish line by his teammates. This was Bolt’s final ever race.

Usain nickname is ‘Lightning Bolt’ and continues to be widely regarded as being the fastest sprinter of all time.

Use the plan below to help as you gather your information and to structure your biography before you begin to write it.

Introduction Who are you writing about? Why are they famous?

Childhood Who are their parents? Did they have any siblings? Where were they born? Did they go to school? What was their favourite subject at school?

Achievement What was their first achievement in their field? What failure did they have to overcome? How many times did they hear no? Did anyone coach/ teach them? Did they win any awards? Where they the first at anything?

What will this person be remembered for? Have they inspired you? What are they doing now if they are alive?

Mae Jemison facts for kids

Mae Carol Jemison (born October 17, 1956) is an American physician and NASA astronaut. She became the first African-American woman to enter space when she served on the crew of the Space Shuttle Endeavor in September 1992. Jemison was born in Decatur, Alabama. She moved to Chicago at age three. Her brother and sisters are Charlie, Dorothy, Ada, and Charles Jemison. She graduated high school at the age of 16. She studied at Stanford University on a scholarship. There she got a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering in 1977. As she had been in high school, Jemison was very involved in extracurricular activities at Stanford. These included dance and theater productions. She was also the head of the Black Student union. After graduating from medical school (Cornell University, 1981), Jemison joined the Peace Corps. She served as its area medical officer from 1983 to 1985 in the West African countries of Sierra Leone and Liberia. Jemison worked at NASA from 1987 to 1993. She later founded The Jemison Group, Inc., which developed ALAFIYA, a satellite-based telecommunications system. This system was to be used to improve healthcare delivery in developing nations. She also was a professor in the Environmental Studies Program at Dartmouth College. There she directed the Jemison Institute for Advancing Technology in Developing Countries. She has studied astronomy, zoology, archaeology, and many other studies.

• Mae Jamison has a fear of heights but she did not let that stop her from going into space.

• After working in the Peace Corps, she applied to NASA’s astronaut program and in 1987 she was one of 15 people who got selected.

• She flew into space with six other astronauts aboard the Endeavouron mission STS47 on September 12, 1992.

• Mae Jamison returned on September 20, 1992 after more than 190 hours in space. She left NASA in March 1993.

• After retiring from NASA Jamison accepted a teaching fellowship at Dartmouth College.

• She also served on the board of directors of the World Sickle Cell Foundation from 1990 to 1992.

• Jamison is also a trained dancer and opened a dance studio in her home.

• In 1993, she made a guest appearance on an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

• She established The Dorothy Jemison Foundation for Excellence, named after her mother.

Katherine Johnson

Katherine Johnson was an American mathematician. She made important contributions to the United States space program during her career at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Her work helped send astronauts to the Moon.

Katherine Coleman was born on August 26, 1918, in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Her intelligence

and skill with numbers became obvious when she was a child. She was in high school by the time she was

10 years old. Katherine graduated from West Virginia State College in 1937 with highest honors and then

took a teaching job in Virginia.

In 1939 Katherine was selected to be one of the first three African American students to enroll in a

graduate program at West Virginia University. She studied math but soon left to take care of her family.

She had married James Goble that year. He died in 1956. (She later married James Johnson.

In 1953 Johnson began work at the West Area Computing unit of the National Advisory Committee for

Aeronautics (NACA). The West Computers, as they were known, were a group of African American women.

They studied data from tests and provided mathematical computations that were essential to the success

of the U.S. space program.

The West Computers were segregated from white workers. They were forced to use separate bathrooms

and dining facilities. That changed when NACA became NASA in 1958.

At NASA Johnson was a member of the Space Task Group. She calculated the flight path for the spacecraft

that put the first U.S astronaut in space in 1961. The year before she had coauthored a paper with an

engineer. It was the first time a woman in her division received credit as an author of a research report.

She authored or coauthored 26 research reports during her career.

Page 7: n the pack his weekthere is a extract of the BFG and n extract … 3 Pack... · 2020-07-08 · I n the pack his weekthere is a extract of the BFG and n extract from a non-fiction

In 1962 John Glenn became the first American to orbit Earth. However, before he left the ground, he

wanted to make sure the electronic computer had planned the flight correctly. He asked to have Johnson

double check the computer’s calculations. Johnson was also part of the team that calculated where and

when the rocket would be launched that would send the first three men to the Moon. Johnson also

worked on the space shuttle program. She retired from NASA in 1986. Johnson died on February 24, 2020.

Johnson received many awards and honors. In 2015 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. NASA honored her in 2016 by naming a building, the Katherine G. Johnson Computational Research Facility, after her. That year the book Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race was published. It tells the story of the West Computers, including Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson. A motion picture based on the book was also released in 2016.

Thomas Edison

• His middle name was Alva and his family called him Al.• His first two kids had the nicknames Dot and Dash.• He set up his first lab in his parent's basement at the age of 10.• He was partially deaf.• His first invention was an electric vote recorder.• His 1093 patents are the most on record.• He said the words to "Mary had a little lamb" as the first recorded voice on the phonograph.• Edison acquired 1093 patents (something that gives someone the ownership of an invention so that

no one else can make it and sell it) for his inventions – this is the record number of patents that oneperson has ever had.

• Edison’s best known inventions are the electric light system, the phonograph (a machine thatrecords and replays sound) and motion pictures (movies).

• Edison wasn’t a great pupil school and only lasted three months! His mum taught him at home.• Edison was known by his middle name, Al, as a boy, rather than being called Thomas.• Edison lost most of his hearing when he was 12 years old. He wasn’t completely deaf, but said that

he liked being able to not hear as it meant he could concentrate on his experiments and inventions.• When he was 15 years old, Edison started printing a newspaper on board the train he then worked

on.• Edison would often spend 18 hours a day working – and about 4 hours sleeping!• When he was a telegraph operator, Edison often asked for night shifts so that he could spend some

of his time sneaking in some experiments while he was working.• At one point in his life, Edison was called ‘The Wizard of Menlo Park’. Menlo Park was the name of

the village one of his earlier factories was located in.• In 1881 Edison received the French Legion of Honour for his electric power system.

Maths – Measures

In this unit of Measures, we will be working learning how to read measurements from weighing scales. We use different types of measurements to weigh different types of items.

When we weigh items, it is normal practise to round the measurement to the nearest interval.

For example

I would round the weight of this jam jar to 500g. The needle is closer to 500g than it is to 600g. The needle is before the middle mark of 550g so therefore I would round down to the nearest interval to 500g.

Task 1.1- round the mass of these items in grams to the nearest interval.

A)_________________________ B)______________ C)__________ D)____________

e all go through changes. Small changes like taking a new

route home or big

change like a new sibling, m

oving home or having to start hom

e are more difficult. But just because a change

is hard does not mean it cannot be good. And just because a change is good does not m

ean it is not hard.

1-Think of some changes that you have gone through this year so far. W

rite them on sm

all pieces of paper.

2-Take you change and place it in the Venn diagram below

Art

Chris Ofili

This week as we continue to learn about the artist Chris Ofili we are going to focus on this piece, Afrodizzia. When I looks at this piece I see vibrant colours, movement and different shapes. I see something that celebrates what others may see as mistakes, going out of the line.

I want you this week to try and recreate this painting with whatever art supplies you have at home. Paint, chalk, colouring pencils, felt tips. Show an explosion of colour and shape on the page and enjoy expressing yourselves without restrictions of lines.
