CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL
The Catholic Ministries Appeal is replacing the Fruitful Harvest Appeal and will begin in our parish September 19-20, 2020. Prior
to this weekend, you will receive an envelope in the mail from Bishop Doherty with a brochure, pledge card and return
envelope for mailing.
The reason for the change is to focus on the many ministries that are supported through this appeal and to increase the
transparency of how the funds raised from this appeal are utilized to support the works of Christ directly through the diocese,
as well as through the ministries that support each of our local parishes.

MESSAGE FROM FR. DEKEYSER
You may be wondering why the priests assigned to this pastorate did not have the weekend Masses this past
weekend. On Friday, I found out that a parishioner with whom I had had regular contact during my first week here tested
positive for COVID-19. I had spent Thursday night in Rochester with Fr. Shine, which means that if I had contracted the virus,
then he was exposed also. On Saturday morning, I went for a COVID-19 screening and found out that I would not know the
results until Monday. I made the decision late Saturday morning to get Mass coverage for all of our Masses since we could
have risked exposing all of our parishioners to the virus. On Monday, I found out that my COVID-19 test came back negative,
so both Fr. Shine and myself are fine. However, I still think we made the right decision to protect our people rather than ri sk
exposure. Please pray for our parishioners and all people who have contracted the virus.
Many people have been asking me about the parishes in our Pastorate that do not have regularly scheduled Masses
in their church buildings. Are these parishes closed? If not, what is their status?
These parishes are NOT closed. They have been listed as potential closures by the Uniting in Heart 2030 Plan. They may
be closed at some time in the future, but right not, I do not have immediate plans for their closure.
Concerning their status, these parishes still have their own church buildings, bank accounts, finance councils, and
parishioners. In fact, envelopes that are placed in the collection basket in any of the parishes in our Pastorate will be placed in
the appropriate account, based on which parish that family is registered at. The church buildings in these parishes may still be
used for Baptisms, Weddings, and Funerals. In addition, we may have special Masses there from time to time, such as on the
Feast Day of their Patron Saint. I am open to having these churches opened for regular or occasional prayer gatherings, such
as the Rosary, Litanies, Novenas, private prayer, etc. Also, the parish halls may still be used for parish gatherings, community
events, bible studies, coffee & donut time, etc. Because of this, the buildings and grounds will still need to be maintained.
Each parish in our Pastorate will be financially responsible for maintaining its own building and grounds. The
administrative overhead of running the Pastorate will be shared among all of the parishes in our Pastorate in an equitable
fashion. I will write to you again with more details about that after I have had the chance to meet with all six parish finance
councils and get their input on the matter.
I hope this clarifies the status of these parishes and I hope it assures each of you that these parishes are not closed.
Please feel free to contact me if you have additional questions about any of this. I know that all of us are experiencing some
disruptions due to the changes that are taking place right now. But, I really believe that the way that each of us approaches
the changes that are happening will affect the success or failure of the changes. If we all work together, I believe that we can
create a change that will build our Pastorate into something even greater than what we had before. I hope that each of you
will choose to join me in this great endeavor.

Quizás se pregunte por qué los sacerdotes asignados a este pastorado no tuvieron misas de fin de semana el pasado
fin de semana. El viernes, me enteré de que un feligrés con el que había tenido contacto regular durante mi primera semana
aquí dio positivo por COVID-19. Había pasado la noche del jueves en Rochester con el P. Shine, lo que significa que si yo

Cada parroquia de nuestro Pastorado será económicamente responsable de mantener su propio edificio y terrenos.
Los gastos administrativos de funcionamiento de la Pastorada se compartirán entre todas las parroquias de nuestra
Pastorada de manera equitativa. Le escribiré de nuevo con más detalles al respecto después de haber tenido la

ALTAR & ROSARY SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP
The Altar & Rosary Society of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rochester would like to offer three $100 scholarships this year. The
following guidelines must be met.
1. Student must attend St. Joseph Church in Rochester and be in good standing with the church.
2. Student must be actively serving in the church in some capacity. Serving, greeting, reading, etc.
3. Student must be attending college or trade school in the fall of 2020.
4. Student must show proof of enrollment in college or trade school.
5. Please list your name, address, school attending, goals for the future, and what church activities you have or are currently
participating in.
