Review of design basis note of Cauvery Bridge on South Western Railway.

Fatigue life estimation of steel girder of Bridge No. 586 on East Coast Railway was done and a residual fatigue life of 74 years was estimated based on results of instrumentation. Thus, the steel girders of this bridge can be retained for. Report BS 107 was issued in this regard.

Proof checking of underslung open web girder design of 30.5m span 25t loading for N.W. Railway.

Consultancy was provided for new Bridge No. 152 on Jaipur Bandikui Section for removal of speed restriction of 30 kmph imposed by CRS.

Consultancy was also rendered to Northern Railway for long life painting system on Chenab Bridge in Udhampur Srinagar Project.

B&S Directorate is having a well furnished laboratory with following facilities.

Impact load and static load testing facility for full scale newly developed FRP/Composite sleeper are being done as required by nodal Directorate.

In recent past following testing and inspection works were carried out.

NDT testing of Road Over Bridge (ROB), Ring Road near Manak Nagar Railway Station and cube testing in B&S/Lab Lucknow.

NDT testing of Bridge No.116 on Chambal river, codes. This work has been completed and the thJhansi Division, North Central Railway. outcome discussed in the 78 BSC. The implications

of the provisions have been worked out and the results were discussed in CBEs Seminar held in November,

th09. The item was again discussed in 79 BSC in March, 10 and approved finally. Correction Slip No. 18 has been incorporated in IRS Bridge Code after approval from Railway Board.

Mathematical models of two bridges have been created by which static analysis can be performed for self weight, dead loads, pre-stressing forces and live loads. The module can be used to compute natural frequencies and mode-shapes. Field measurements indicated that:

Displacement of bridge at a location cannot be obtained reliably by numerical integration of acceleration measured.

Measured frequencies cannot be used for updating model reliably due to large spatial variation and uncertainties in material properties.

Thus it has been concluded that the traditional vibration measurements and signature analysis techniques may result in significant errors when applied for condition assessment. The experimental work and analysis of field observations has led to the conclusion that it is not feasible to deploy this technology for condition monitoring of concrete bridges at present. Railway Board has approved closure of the project.

The provision of seismic design are very old and after the major earthquake of Bhuj, need was felt for re-looking the existing provisions of seismic design NDT testing of concrete sleeper supplied by for the design of new bridges considering the Director, QA/Civil by extracting cores.developments in BIS and other international B&S Directorate has vetted 146 speed standards. certificate and 15 different trail of various types
