GLASS & GLAZING

There are few people in the glass and glazing sector that have not heard of Nick Dutton. Formerly involved with Synseal and Door-Stop, he explains to Editor Michael Gannon about his career and life at locksmith supplier, Brisant.

eDiTOr: BefOre we LOOk aT yOur LaTeST VenTure, giVe uS an iDea Of yOur exPerience in THe feneSTraTiOn SecTOr?

Dutton: Long! It started selling trade frames in 1991. In 1993 I was running our conservatory department (buying in from Ultraframe). When this business was sold in 1995 I moved to the extrusions’ operation. This, in turn, resulted in selling profile, patio kits, hardware, gaskets, and then we designed our own conservatory systems which was great fun. In 2008 I left to set up Door-Stop International, which of course Masonite purchased from us in February this year.

eDiTOr: yOu MenTiOn SynSeaL anD THere’S nO DOuBT THaT iT waS an inTereSTing TiMe Back in THe earLy TO MiD-1990S wHen iT gOT quiTe a rePuTaTiOn fOr ruffLing feaTHerS. DO yOu THink iT waS DeSerVeD, Or THaT THe cOMPeTiTiOn HaD gOT TOO MucH Of an OLD PaLS’ acT?

Dutton: I’m not sure whether there was an old pals’ act or not, but there were many of our competitors who were very preoccupied looking inwards, rather than outwards. I think our businesses have succeeded by concentrating on identifying what the market wants, then delivering it.

eDiTOr: wHaT wOuLD yOu Say were yOur PrinciPaL acHieVeMenTS THere?

Dutton: If you were to ignore the headline fiscal performances, I would say that our principal achievements were in repeatedly spotting what people wanted to buy and then making it available to them. The launch of Shield started to change hearts and minds. But then when we launched

our Global conservatory system, at a time when no one had dared do this, we found a breathtaking demand.

eDiTOr: SOMe PeOPLe were SurPriSeD wHen yOu LefT fOr DOOr-STOP inTernaTiOnaL BecauSe THey Saw yOu aS a cOnSTanT facTOr aT SynSeaL. waS iT THaT yOu wanTeD TO Be yOur Own Man, a new cHaLLenge in a grOwing MarkeT, Or a BiT Of BOTH?

Dutton: To be honest, it’s much simpler than that. It was time to sell Synseal, but we were too young to retire. We did what we had done times before – we found a demand for a product that was not being satisfied. Only instead of incorporating it within Synseal, it was setup as a standalone facility. So, there was life after Synseal!

eDiTOr: again, wHaT wOuLD yOu Say were yOur MOST iMPOrTanT cOnTriBuTiOnS TO DOOr-STOP’S PrOgreSS in THe MarkeT?

Dutton: The development of the web systems made it possible for Door-Stop to make what seemed impossible really easy. The services and facilities that go on behind the scenes on the Door-Stop website are remarkable, and better still, they require hardly any intervention due to the automation. This made the development of bedrock principles like a three-day turnaround and ‘If it’s late, it’s free’ easy instead of impossible.

eDiTOr: aParT frOM THe OBViOuS anSwer THaT yOu were BOugHT OuT, wHy DiD yOu DeciDe TO LeaVe DOOr-STOP anD HOw LOng DiD iT Take fOr yOu TO THink Of anOTHer SecTOr?

Dutton: Door-Stop is a fantastic business and it was great fun getting it to where it got to. The business was in a great market position, in a great market, in an economy that was starting to turn. Masonite saw the opportunity that the next owner could enjoy – all in all making it the ideal time to both buy the business and to sell it.

eDiTOr: wHy BriSanT?

Dutton: It’s a young, dynamic business with some genuinely great selling points.

Steve Stewart (ex Managing Director of Avocet ABS), and Adrian Vicker (Ex Managing Director of Siegenia) have done a fantastic job in developing many great products and have an incredibly happy customer base. My involvement is to help more people see how Brisant can help develop their business.

eDiTOr: wHaT DOeS THiS SecTOr Offer in THe way Of cHaLLengeS?

Dutton There are jobs that we need to do, and collectively, we know how to do them. Brisant has got some exciting times looming. In many businesses, growth can result in a reduction in customer service but the logistics of this product and the infrastructure already in place, will avoid this.

eDiTOr: wHaT are yOu nOw Offering TO THe nexT STage Of DeVeLOPMenT fOr BriSanT?

Dutton: I’m helping with the launch of our flagship product, Ultion. We’re expecting it have both TS007 3* and the Sold Secure Diamond accreditation from the Master Locksmith Association.

Dutton: I have heard many conversations about the ‘characters’ not being in the industry anymore. Yes, granted, there were some really colourful people involved that aren’t anymore. I suspect those that consider how good the ‘good old days’ were, haven’t had the benefit of meeting the new characters. I’m doing the MADI Ball Rally* next year and with the exception of Paul Godwin [former PR of Synseal], there are some really great characters involved with that!*A sports rally from the heart of the UK to the Café de Paris Monte Carlo and back again.

GLASS & GLAZING

Last Friday the G-Awards in London saw due recognition of the best the glass and glazing sector has to offer. Well over 560 people attended the G-Awards, held at the London Hilton on Park Lane, hosted by comedian, Kevin Bridges. There were 12 categories up for grabs, plus Gary Morton who received the Derek Bonnard Award for Excellence for his work with the charity he founded and organises the GM Fundraising.

In his address, Tony Higgin, organiser of the G-Awards, spoke about this year’s winners calling them all “outstanding”. “After 11 years, the G-Awards are still going strong thanks to the continuously excellent standard of entries we receive. Each year I wonder how we can beat the previous one, but it happens every time. All our finalists should be extremely proud, and our winners represent everything to which we all aspire in terms of commitment, dedication and passion. This is what makes our industry great.”

THe g14 awarD winnerS are:

• Commercial Project of the Year: Pilkington UK for the Stonehenge Visitor Centre

• Component Supplier of the Year: ERA

• Conservatory Installer of the Year: T&K Home Improvements

• Customer Care Initiative of the Year: Emplas Window Systems Ltd

• Environmental Initiative of the Year: Glassolutions Saint-Gobain for Salford Energy House

• Fabricator of the Year: Polyframe

• Glass Company of the Year: Ravensby Glass

• Installer of the Year: The Window Company (Contracts)

• Training & Development Initiative of the Year: Quickslide for its in-house training & development programme

“I want to offer my thanks to everyone who entered, all our judges and everyone who attended the G14 Awards Presentation & Gala Dinner,” said Tony Higgin, closing the formal session. “My sincere congratulations go to all our winners. We will be here again on Friday 27 November 2015 for what I’m sure will be another year of outstanding results.”

Derek BOnnarD awarD fOr exceLLence

This award went to Gary Morton from GM Fundraising to recognise not just his contribution to the glazing industry, but also for his extraordinary leadership in raising over £1 million for Hope House Children’s Hospice.

Joe Hague, Managing Director of Award sponsor, Promac Group, commented: “Gary was the perfect choice for the Derek Bonnard Award this year. Promac was an early supporter of GM Fundraising and we have watched in

amazement at his energy and effort in raising such a huge amount of money for children with life-limiting illnesses. It is an astonishing achievement.”

Talking exclusively to MyTradeTV, Gary Morton said: “This isn’t just for me but for all the GM team who have worked tirelessly over the years since GM Fundraising started in 1995.”

Hope House provides palliative care for children with terminal conditions and support for their families, both on site and in their homes. It receives only nominal support from the government, with over 95% of its £4 million annual operating costs being met by charitable donations and GM Fundraising is proud to be its largest single donor.

“The team of motivated volunteers, that run GM Fundraising, give their time freely and are committed to delivering the highest quality events, while ensuring that every penny raised, reaches the children and families at Hope House,” explained Gary.

The next target for the GM team is to reach £1.5 million in donations and they appear well on their way to achieving it.

Synseal acquires trade and operating assets of the Litchfield Group’s UK window & trade extrusion and door businesses, trading as LB Plastics Ltd and Manse Masterdor Ltd.Bought for an undisclosed sum, the purchase comes as some surprise as more recent rumours had been centred around Eurocell and Synseal.

Based at Nether Heage in Derbyshire, LB Plastics was at the forefront with the use of PVC-U windows for the British market back in the 1970s and the company has been respected for its high performance thermoplastics for the UK building industry ever since.

Operating production facilities registered to ISO.14001, LB Plastics predominantly supplies lead-free extruded PVC-U products to approved fabricators and installers, along with custom designed extrusions to other building component

suppliers. Product sales are backed by extensive technical support and in-house design and testing services, including a dedicated team focused on delivery of house building projects.

In addition to Sheerframe PVC-U windows, doors and curtain walling, the Litchfield Group’s UK window and trade extrusion and door product portfolio includes a broad range of options that include Hometrim cellular cladding, roofline and trims, Sheerline fencing and decking products, Thermlock thermally enhanced window and door reinforcements and a range of Masterdor residential door sets and Suredor GRP composite doors.

“LB Plastics boasts a proud tradition having served the UK fenestration industry for more than 35 years, offering established and proven products that have stood the test of time,” explained David Leng, Chief Executive, Synseal’s Chief Executive. “This acquisition is a good fit to expand the scope of our business, as LB Plastics primarily

supplies commercial market sectors with a full range of specification products which complement our range for residential and home improvement market applications.”

Mr Leng insisted that Synseal will continue to invest in the Sheerframe and Masterdor brands as it had done when it bought K2 Conservatories in 2012. “We will fully support the current development of LB Plastics and Manse Masterdor product offerings and service logistics to strengthen these businesses for future success,” he concluded.

Origin, a UK based, award-winning manufacturer of bespoke aluminium bi-folding doors, windows and blinds, has reduced the lead time on its aluminium flush casement windows to just one week; a record lead time for a made-to-measure system within the glass and glazing industry. Available on Origin’s most popular RAL colours, the reduced lead time means that customers can have their bespoke windows manufactured and delivered within seven days of the order being placed.

As Origin design, manufacture and assemble all of their products in the Buckinghamshire based factory, it means that they have complete control over product quality, and this is further enhanced by the stringent quality checks that occur at each stage of the manufacturing process.

Origin already offers a unique ‘Your Lead Time, Not Ours’ zero lead time service on its doors, and aims to replicate this on the windows by 2015.

Neil Ginger, CEO at Origin, said: “Offering a ‘Your Lead Time, Not Ours’ zero lead time on the Origin Bi-fold Door is a pivotal

part of our offering to both trade and end customers, so it is important that the new Origin Window replicates this to help maintain the high levels of service that our customers have come to expect from us.

“Since launching the new window earlier this year, we’re proud to have halved the lead time on each bespoke system, and are continuing to improve our processes to offer the shortest lead times in the industry.”

The Origin Window is available from www.origin-global.com.

GLASS & GLAZING

A new integral blind system from Morley Glass & Glazing offers total control with one easy device.Mounted on the internal face of the glass unit, a cleverly designed magnetic slider allows total control and ease of use of the new SL20SV integral Uni-Blind(R), which utilises ScreenLine(R) technology.

The new cordless sliding integrated Venetian blind system (SL20SV) gives fabricators and installers the scope to provide windows and doors featuring a truly user-friendly operating control system. Only one device is used to raise and tilt the slats. The external slider "logically" moves in the same direction as the blind operating direction.

Like all Uni-Blinds(R), the SL20SV sliding system provides a low maintenance and contemporary feature for any double glazed window or door - and is available in 10 different colours, including the exclusive anthracite grey (S159).

The integral blinds are assembled and permanently sealed within the double glazing cavity which comes with a warm edge spacer bar as standard to offer optimum thermal insulation.

Once sealed in this totally dust-free environment, the blinds require no cleaning, always appear new and are protected from damage.

The SL20SV's external magnetic slider is also treated with the patented

Sanitized(R) anti-bacterial finish, which provides a long-lasting protective function ideal for domestic and commercial applications. The slider is so sleek and slim that it is also ideal for sliding doors.

The operational reliability of Uni-Blinds(R) has been proven in the market for more than 25 years which is backed by a five-year warranty.

Uni-Blinds(R) sealed units are supplied in the same way as standard sealed units

with just 10 day lead times from any Friday.

Uni-Blinds(R) are also backed by Morley Glass & Glazing's excellent after sales service, plus the UK's largest range of ScreenLine(R spares.

GLASS & GLAZING

When Premier DGU Ltd needed a second line to meet the growing demand for triple glazed sealed units, it chose Super Spacer from Edgetech UK, a Quanex company. A fully automated line with a Super Spacer application robot was designed by Hegla Bystronic as the shortest triple glazing IGU line in the UK, to fit the limited space at Premier DGU’s Exeter factory.

Barry Clarke, Director at Premier DGU Ltd says: “Triple glazing is the way the industry is going there’s no doubt about it. The demand from our customers has been growing for months now and we see it accounting for 40 to 50 per cent of the business within the next year and a half. We’ve been a customer of Edgetech for more than five years and already operate a fully occupied For.El Super Spacer line. The second line has been specifically designed to suit the space we have

available and deliver high throughput to manage increased demand.”

The new line will manufacture both double and triple glazed sealed units using Edgetech Super Spacer and Saint-Gobain Glass.

Craig Dodsworth, Head of Marketing at Saint-Gobain Glass adds: “Customers are looking to innovate more than ever across Double and Triple Glazing solutions. Saint-Gobain low-E solutions are optimised for both configurations. When used in Triple Glazing, impressive

glass centre pane thermal performance as low as 0.5wm2k can be achieved whilst maintaining neutral aesthetics.”

Alan Fielder, Director of Sales and Marketing at Edgetech adds: “Customers tell us that the ability to manufacture triple glazing efficiently is becoming more important. We’re really pleased to be working with Premier DGU as their IG solutions partner and supporting them with a cost effective solution to grow capacity.”

Steve Goble, Managing Director at Hegla Bystronic comments: “Factory space is often an issue for IGU manufacturers looking to future proof their business with an automated line that can handle triple glazed units. Using a Super Spacer applicator we were able to design a shorter line that solved this problem for Premier DGU.”

Thermobar Warm Edge Spacer, manufactured by Thermoseal Group, is officially at the top of the list of the most thermally efficient spacer systems as per figures published on the new Bundesverband Flachglas (BF) Data Sheet - 0.14W/mK.This value and the calculated Psi Values detailed in this latest data sheet means that according to the 2-box model, you can substitute Thermobar Warm Edge Spacer into any current Window Energy Rating (WER) Simulation… Including all rigid tubes and foam spacer systems!

Thermoseal Group proposes that substitution of spacer systems should take place when sightlines (including spacer height and accepted simulation measurement for sealant depth) are the same measurement or smaller AND the total box value (including thermal value of spacer and sealant) is equal or better. This will ensure that substitution can only positively affect the overall WER value.

Thermoseal Group's Sales Director Mark Hickox, comments: "WER calculations are derived from figures based on the 2-box model figures detailed on BF Data Sheet - including the spacer and the sealant. This makes sense as it gives an overall value for the whole sightline of the unit.

"We are manufacturers of both rigid and foam spacer systems so have no bias as to which option customers choose. However, if you look at the information as detailed below you can see the figures associated with Thermobar and those of a current foam spacer system. Note that foam systems require

a larger simulated sealant depth which negatively affects the 2-box model total. Resultantly, even if the 2-box model figure is re-calculated using lower spacer W/mK values than Thermobar, the 2-box value is likely to still be less thermally efficient than a comparable Thermobar sightline.

"On this basis, we propose that the BFRC adopt the 2-box model method of substitution and give manufacturers the opportunity to substitute the whole sightline of the unit as long as the overall 2-box value is the same or lower.

Thermobar with hot melt sealant currently offers the best 2-box value available."

Since their launch this summer, the greenteQ Monkey Tail espag handle and Dummy Casement Stay have proved to be real hits with VBH’s customers.VBH advise that the fact that the handle is designed specifically as an espagnolette handle, rather than being modified from an existing casement fastener is an important factor in the success.

VBH Marketing Manager Gary Gleeson advises ‘Our handle doesn’t have the unsightly machining marks associated with the modification of casement fasteners. The backplate is a bespoke precision cast component, which means it looks great and has the dimensional consistency necessary for modern window production lines. Since promoting Monkey Tail though MyTradeTV this summer we continue to receive good quality enquiries from companies ranging in size from sole-trader repairers up to the big national fabricator/installers. All have been impressed when they’ve seen the products and take up has been good.’

greenteQ Monkey Tail handles feature a ‘Lift to Turn’ function that prevents handle droop on top hung sashes and guards against external manipulation. Full key locking is provided by the working cylinder. The non-handed Monkey Tail Dummy Casement Stay is a decorative item that fits to the bottom of the opening sash to replicate a casement stay and peg, giving a modern window a very traditional appearance.

Both the handle and stay are finished in hard wearing Antique Black powder coat and are covered by the 10 year greenteQ guarantee.

UAP consistently delivers an affordable, reliable service and constantly look at ways in which to develop and expand their catalogue of supplies in order to make them even more consumer-friendly. They have years of expertise when it comes to designing and devising new and innovative solutions which have been conjured up to appeal to even the most discerning of individuals. As far as domestic tooling and equipment is concerned, there is no-one more established and reputable than UAP Limited when it comes to furnishing customers with reliable, resourceful products at competitive prices.

If you really want to make letterplates and door knockers eye-catching, attractive and unique then Mark Rushton, the UAP Quality Manager, has this to say about their bespoke laser engraving service:

“Laser engraving personalises equipment such as letterplates and door handles and makes them look aesthetically appealing. If you want to safeguard your household and protect a property against potential risk and danger then laser engraving is an absolute must.”

He continues, “The reason why bespoke laser engraving is proving to be extremely popular amongst our customers is primarily due to the fact that it is ever so quick and simple yet makes an incredible difference. It only takes a matter of

minutes yet transforms ordinary, run of the mill products into highly desirable items.

We always aim to keep our rates to an absolute minimum, which is why we are considered to be a leading authority when it comes to supplying superior locksmith tooling at affordable prices, and offer tailored, holistic solutions, carried out by fully-qualified specialists.”

Letterplates have been designed with the specific intention of protecting your post, and come with a range of unique features to provide security against vandalism, the elements and damage from regular usage. With a durable finish and attractive design, letterplates are suitable for a variety of door thicknesses and types.

However, even though these ‘Secure by Design’-accredited products are indeed extremely reliable and resourceful, Mark Rushton believes they can be enhanced and improved even further with the addition of laser engraving. He states that, “Letterplates are a great choice for any home, and a smart investment as they last such a long time and will not perish and tarnish when exposed to harsh weather conditions. But in order for them to reach their maximum potential and serve the purpose which they are truly meant for then laser engraving is an absolute must.”

Laser engraving takes a matter of minutes to complete and is absolutely fascinating to watch. UAP specialise

in efficient, effective laser engraving, which can be inscribed onto any metal of your choosing, so you are not restricted to having to choose from a limited range of options. It is the ideal option if you want to make the exterior of your household truly unique and innovative, and you will also be pleased to know that laser engraving from UAP is extremely affordable, so you will not have to fork out a fortune for the privilege of having a bespoke, tailored service at your immediate disposal.

Raymond Pearce, Avocet Hardware’s head of UK sales (ABS snap-secure locks) talks to MyTrade TV.“We’ve recently taken great pleasure in announcing two deals that we feel are extremely significant in the on-going battle against lock-snapping.

The first saw composite door manufacturer Door-Stop International confirm that it is now stocking our full range of Affinity hardware – a range that of course includes our ABS snap-secure cylinder lock.

The second story, which was announced just a fortnight later in mid-October, concerned Glazerite Windows’ decision to fit ABS as standard on all of its Secured by Design (SBD) accredited doors. To me these two deals mark a major shift in industry uptake of high security euro cylinder locks – in particular their use in composite doors.

Over the last two years we have worked tirelessly in drawing attention to the insidious rise in the incidents of lock-snapping in the UK, and the hard-to-ignore fact that this has occurred at a time when the number of uPVC and double-glazed doors being installed is at an all-time high.

The correlation between the two has nothing to do with the overall quality of the doors, but begs the question, why have so many manufacturers seen fit to sign off on sub-standard euro cylinder locks that only offer minimal protection between a burglar and his intended victim’s possessions?

Before any door manufacturer gets upset with me, I would like to point out that this attitude has not been confined to them.

The majority of the leading housebuilders still refuse to upgrade their specifications to include snap-secure locks for fear – I believe – of drawing attention to the thousands of recently completed, and sold, new homes that have locks that simply wouldn’t stand up to an attack.

The insurance industry’s head is still well and truly buried in the sand. Snapped locks are still being replaced with like-for-like products in a practice that is wholly bemusing, given that it simply leaves an already burgled home open to exactly the same method of forced entry.

Even the police have played a role. An informative report on the topic having been pulled from national TV on their advice – the reason being that it may draw attention to the practice in areas of the country where lock-snapping wasn’t prevalent, thus giving burglars in these areas new ideas.

Given a choice, I, as one of the law-abiding majority, would much rather I was provided with all the information I need to ensure my home is protected, rather than worry about the fact a would-be burglar might, just might watch the same programme and be inspired by it. And talking of the media – a recent report on ITV1’s This Morning contained inaccurate information, which if followed would not protect your or anyone else’s home from a lock-snapping attack.

Thankfully, things are changing – and Glazerite and Door-Stop International are leading the way by making and announcing their decision to only install BS TS007 3-star rated or SS312 Diamond accredited locks in their doors.

These bold moves have been noted by others, and in the recent weeks more and more door manufacturers have been in contact to talk about incorporating ABS within their composite products. A trend that I’m sure the manufacturers of other TS007 3-star locks will have picked up on.

Our aim has always been to ensure the general public is given the information and the opportunity needed to protect their homes against lock-snapping attack. And so we applaud Glazerite and Door-Stop International for their decisions, encourage others to follow suit, and hopefully this time next year we’ll be able to look back and say this was the moment that signalled the beginning of the end for lock-snappers.”

As the Winkhaus Group reaches its 160th anniversary Justin Harris, Commercial Director of Winkhaus UK, talks about Winkhaus’ history of innovation.A lot has changed in the last 160 years, with advancements encompassing every aspect of day-to-day life. Ground-breaking innovations including the light bulb and auto vehicles, not to mention communications developments such as the telephone, radio, television and internet, have helped to shape the world as we know it today.

Leaps and bounds have also been made in the fenestration industry and one company that has been at the forefront of innovation and change in this market is Winkhaus.

Established in 1854 in Halver, Germany, Winkhaus originally manufactured padlocks before expanding into structural fittings, hinges, and, eventually, locking systems for windows and doors.

The first employees hand-crafted each mechanism; but Justin says although production methods have changed, the mind set of uncompromising quality lives on.

He comments: “The company was founded on the attitude of precision, and this has been a building block of the business as we expanded through the years. We’re proud to have a reputation for high quality products in the industry, and as a trusted partner to work with.”

Today Winkhaus has established itself as one of the leading providers in the industry and is a symbol now more than ever of intelligent systems, outstanding quality and unrivalled service. Winkhaus is still a family owned company, together with over 2,000 employees in five German locations and

international subsidiaries in eight countries.

One growth area that Winkhaus is focusing on is the composite door retail market and its advanced locking systems are used by manufacturers all across the UK looking to add value to their doors and create something special for the end user.

Justin comments: “With our “Grand Entrance” range of locks we can help suppliers entering this market to stand out from the crowd by being able to offer real added value to the end user.”

Innovation means new product being launched regularly and most recently Winkhaus has rolled out additions to the AV2 range of Auto locks, which are the ideal solution for applications such as top-end entrance doors and composite doors.

AV2 Heritage, AV2, blueMatic AV2E, AV2-B are all developed to accommodate changing consumer tastes and work in conjunction with contemporary style door hardware.

Justin comments: “Our original Autolock AV2 and blueMatic AV2E lock have been used extensively in the Social Housing market

for years, especially for Fire Doors and communal doors, but we’ve now further developed these systems to dovetail for other parts of the industry, helping fabricators and installers target lucrative new business in the domestic, commercial and new build markets.”

Looking forward, Winkhaus is ambitious and gearing up for new markets. One of these is keyless locking, a market that the AV2 range accommodates. AV2-B is battery operated and key fob activated, no different from the way a modern car operates.

It is products such as these that demonstrate Winkhaus’ forward thinking approach and commitment to innovation.

SO wHaT Of THe nexT 160 yearS?

Justin concludes: “Our aim is to not only help fabricators stand out in their respective markets but to also provide opportunities for them to enter new ones. What the future will bring is always a difficult question but Winkhaus will still be here – forming partnerships with fabricators and launching products for present and future growth markets.”

Bowater Doors is delighted to be 'splashing out' on a vast, new colour offering. The company has long offered a range of composite door colours including White, Beck Brown, Golden Oak, Rosewood, Green, Red and Dark Blue, and customers will be delighted to hear that the standard range is now available in HUNDREDS of colours.

Bowater Doors Operations Manager, Anita van Vuuren explains: “As always, customer satisfaction is our highest priority with these British-built doors, so we're proud to announce this fantastic new colour offering. We can now offer doors in any RAL colour and they can even be matched to a colour of the customer's choice. This allows homeowners to choose a shade to reflect their personality and create a unique look for their home. It also means that architects and specifiers in the commercial market can choose specific colours to fit with the overall project and even colour-match their branding.

“There is also the option to colour the frames to match, and doors can be different on each side. As such, clients can have a striking colour or woodgrain on the outside, but might choose a lighter, more subtle tone on the inside, to match the interior decor.

“Lead times for painted doors are currently 15 days and all our composite doors are covered by a cohesive ten year guarantee. Should a fault appear in any composite door, door slab or sealed unit supplied by The VEKA UK Group, following inspection, we will repair or replace the appropriate components free of charge. Full details of this guarantee can be found at http://www.frontdoors.uk.com/about-composite-doors/guarantee/.”

“At Bowater doors we are continually listening to the market and developing our products accordingly, and - as you'd expect from an industry leader - the range is incredibly secure, energy efficient, weather resistant and durable. We're pleased to offer such an expansive range of colour options as an additional benefit on these high quality Bowater Doors.

As Solidor continues to innovate in the composite door sector, they have just unveiled The Radlington, a new deep nose cill that is available in nine finishes complete with matching foiled end caps. The Radlington is perfect for the replacement door market and is a modern interpretation of a traditional timber cill, with similar dimensions, yet it also offers a traditional appearance for any new build project. Traditional timber cills were deep and usually aligned with a course of bricks and often these did vary in height, while metric bricks are generally 65mm high.

For these reasons, The Radlington has been designed and engineered 55mm high, with a projection of 165mm, allowing for packing, expansion, baypole jacks and irregular mortar. Yet the first installations have shown that it is far quicker to install

on site and a more robust cill option than a standard 30mm high by 150mm projection cill, which is designed more with PVCu windows in mind.

This new type of cill is available for the existing Solidor range in nine finishes including white, foiled white, cream, Chartwell Green, Irish Oak, golden oak, rosewood, grey, Schwarzbraun black. There are also eight further finishes to match the colours of the latest Solidor/R9 composite door offering, with exclusive finishes such as silvered oak and Painswick.

Lee Williams, sales director of Solidor commented: “The Radlington is a true replacement of the traditional timber cill,

yet with modern engineered materials and structurally a great choice for a composite door installation. It’s a fundamental part of our strategy to offer our customers new and exciting products and The Radlington certainly fits the bill.”

Hurst Plastics has invested in an ambitious environmental policy which pledges to minimise waste and help the company achieve its goal of ‘zero landfill’ by the end of 2015. Hurst’s strategy aims to divert more than 350 tonnes of waste material a year from landfill and successfully recycle it into useful new products.

The Kingston-upon-Hull based company has introduced a number of green initiatives to help it significantly reduce material usage and recycle waste.

Hurst has teamed up with fellow Hull-based waste management and recycling firm Taylors Environmental and installed three large baling machines in its 50,000 square foot factory. The machines compact three tonnes of card and half a tonne of plastic packaging a month for recycling.

Hurst has also joined forces with Halifax-based plastic recycling company Retech and now recycles 24 tonnes of MDF, polystyrene and plastic panel off-cuts and three tonnes of PVC-u off-cuts a month. The ‘closed loop’ recycled material is then

supplied back to the PVC industry. The company now also uses any suitable waste polystyrene for packing its composite and panel doors before dispatch.

Hurst’s environmental policy has been expanded further to minimise consumption wherever possible. The company has recently invested in fleXipod – a cutting edge electronic proof of delivery and fulfilment system. Each vehicle in Hurst’s fleet of delivery vehicles is now equipped with fleXipod, which generates live ‘paperless’ information for both the customer and Hurst to ensure smooth, scheduled deliveries and enhanced service. Its introduction has halved the company’s paper usage and streamlined deliveries so vehicles use less fuel.

Darren Glew, Operations Director at Hurst, said: “Sustainability is really important to Hurst Plastics and we are very committed to minimising our carbon footprint by reducing, re-using and recycling whenever we can. We are recycling around 30 tonnes of waste a month and are reducing our paper and fuel usage wherever possible. We also partner with local companies where possible to reduce fuel consumption even further. Our environmental policy is on-going and we are well on course to achieve our target to send nothing to landfill by the end of next year.”

Wednesday 3rd December will see Origin manufacture its 100,000th aluminium bi-folding door. Origin, the leading British manufacturer of bespoke bi-fold doors, windows and made-to-measure blinds, will produce its 100,000th bi-fold door at 11.24am; equivalent to manufacturing enough doors to fill 22 football pitches when laid flat since opening its doors in High Wycombe.

Neil Ginger, CEO of Origin, said: “We are delighted to be celebrating such a significant milestone to end what has already been a successful year for Origin, with the launch of the new Origin Window and opening operations in America and Germany. We’ve had a fantastic year and this is the icing on the cake - quite literally! The team will be celebrating in the factory to mark the occasion.”

The milestone signifies that Origin has made enough bi-folding doors to create over seven thousand square miles of beautiful views in homes across Britain since the company was established in 2001. In fact, Origin has

manufactured so many doors it would take Commonwealth Gold medallist and Origin Athlete, Fran Halsall, over 13 hours to swim the 90,000 metre width of all the doors.

Origin has used enough aluminium profile for King Kong to climb, with the total weight equalling 943 London Double Decker buses. The width of the doors can span the circumference of the London Eye 213 times, plus the height is equivalent to 682 Shard skyscrapers.

The family business was founded by cousins Neil Ginger and Victoria Brocklesby, who found they could not source high quality folding sliding doors

for building projects. Their ambitious solution was to establish a company and manufacture the UK’s best quality doors with uncompromising levels of service.

Origin has grown to become the UK’s leading manufacturer of bi-folding doors and is the only company in the world to offer zero lead time on a completely bespoke product, thanks to its pioneering ‘Your Lead Time, Not Ours’ service.

Today, the company is an £17 million turnover company with operations in Dubai and the US, and has this year extended its offering by introducing a new flush casement aluminium window system to match the high quality Origin Bi-fold Door.

Origin’s 100,000 bi-fold doors are equivalent to:

• The height of 682 Shard skyscrapers

• A width to span the circumference of the London Eye 213 times

• The number of people that visit Glastonbury each year

• The weight of 943 London Double Decker buses

• 5 times the length of the White Cliffs of Dover

• 156 times the height of Ben Nevis

• Commonwealth Gold medallist and Origin Athlete, Fran Halsall, would take over 13 hours to swim the 90,000 metre width of all the doors

The home of the insulated composite door

Richard Kirman Sales and Marketing Manager for IG Doors Trade Division tells us how consumer expectation of composite Doors has changed the way the industry operates. We have been saying for some time now that ever changing consumer expectations of Composite Doors has driven the expansive development programme we have witnessed in recent years; in turn this has driven the phenomenal growth we have seen across the sector over the same period.

It is a trend which we don’t see changing too much; composite doors are now such a design feature for any home that further product development is inevitable. Gone are the days when composite doors were sold first and foremost as a practical, security product.

They are now sold on the basis of their aesthetic appeal first and foremost, with a range of styles needed to suit exactly the type of building they are going to be fitted into; a range of colours needed to complement the rest of the décor; and a range of glazing and hardware options needed to satisfy the precise requirements of the individual customer.

It is why companies like ours have spent so much time developing such an extensive range of core

products with an even wider range of outstanding options to complement them. Going forward we will also be looking at thermal enhancements, another key driver for the consumer.

It is my view that this is the composite door market of today, and it will be very much the composite door market of tomorrow.

Developing more and more consumer choices will be the key to growth; not only in the direct replacement or new build markets, but also in the market which already has first generation composite doors installed.

The new products give so much more to the homeowner than they have ever done before; they are becoming a commodity product which can be replaced on a regular basis the same way other homeowner products have always been.

While the composite doors of today could probably last a life time; the fact that they have become a design feature of the home rather than a functional feature means it is highly likely they will be replaced much more frequently than this.

Distinction Doors has announced that it is just about to start production of its new 70mm door. Chantel Roach, Distinction’s Marketing Manager, says, “We launched the door at the FIT Show where it attracted a great deal of interest. For fabricators and installers, the key selling point is that it can be over-rebated so it can be a direct replacement for the PVCu equivalent. For homeowners, the fact that it offers superb thermal efficiency with a typical 37% improvement over a timber door is likely to be an eye-catching proposition.”

Like the rest of Distinction’s range, the 70mm door uses a Nan Ya blank, guaranteeing an excellent pedigree. Thanks to the impact resistant GRP skin with rigid polymer subframe, high-density, CFC-free polyurethane foam core and high quality multi-point locks, it offers security that

far exceeds both PVCu and timber doors, giving peace of mind to homeowners.

The aesthetics are unparalleled too. The woodgraining on a Nan Ya slab is renowned for its authenticity. The graining is repeated on the glazing cassette, a subtle finishing touch that creates a seamless and sophisticated appearance. The 70mm door will be available in the complete range of Distinction Doors’ colours and homeowners will also be able to choose from the 5 glass ranges to personalise their choice. Add in the low maintenance and durability that comes with choosing a GRP composite door, and the 70mm door looks like an attractive option.

Chantel concludes, “We are delighted to be extending our range to include a 70mm door. We know from our research and feedback from our customers that it will open up new sales opportunities – and that can only be a good thing.”

With immediate effect Bohle AG is taking over the cutting wheel producer Lixon sprl and as a result further expands its market leadership in automatic glass cutting. The long-established company from Ransart, Belgium, is the second largest supplier of this industry sector in Europe and has had a significant influence on the development of glass cutting wheels for flat glass for more than 100 years. The Clip-S, still widely used today, was one of the company´s product innovations. In addition, Lixon pioneered in developing new materials for cutting wheels.

The negotiations about the acquisition of all company assets, including machines, customer data, trademark rights, patents and production goods, were conducted at glasstec 2014. This does not include a succession in title.

“With the takeover of Lixon´s business activities, Bohle reinforces its leading position in cutting technology for float or automotive glass producers and for companies which process glass at an industrial scale”, Christoph Schmidt, Vice President of

Sales Bohle AG, explains the background of the takeover and adds: “The high Lixon quality successfully rounds off the supreme quality Bohle cutting wheel portfolio and enables us to address new target groups.”

According to Schmidt, the first priority now is to guarantee the uninterrupted supply of existing Lixon customers with cutting technology in order to ensure a smooth production flow. For this purpose, all direct Lixon customers and trade partners will be contacted by Bohle shortly.

For many decades, Bohle has been offering application consulting for automatic glass cutting projects on an international scale, its employees have been visiting customers on site and the company has been developing and producing customised and project-specific applications at fair prices in Germany. “The development and production of cutting wheels is the core of Bohle as a company. We have been understanding processes and markets for more than 90 years. The former Lixon customers will benefit from our long standing experience and performance “, Vice President Sales, Christoph Schmidt, is convinced.

RegaLead is pleased to announce that application of its ColorSpray glass paint system can now be automated thanks to a partnership with Goldglass Technologies Group, the Israel based manufacturer of specialist application solutions.Historically applied using an industrial spraygun, the ColorSpray epoxy acrylic based paint system is ideal for the backpainting of glass in a variety of applications. Its flexibility and performance allow it to be applied to any monolithic glass surface, and even in laminated glass, with no specialist drying or curing equipment. What’s more, any Ral, Pantone, NCS or BS colour can be achieved. And now, with the Goldglass M.R.C 2350- CI automatic painting machine, ColorSpray can be applied to glass automatically.

The machine is efficient and easy to use, and can apply ColorSpray at a rapid rate. Paint quality is managed using the high performance spray gun, whilst spread and coverage is controllable via automatic speed adjustment and the belt conveyor system’s pace range. It

includes an integrated extraction system which removes paint dust and fumes to the dust collector unit, as well as an automatic cleaning system that cleans all excess paint within minutes, making the M.R.C 2350- CI ready to paint a new colour in virtually no time at all.

Moran Goldstein, COO of Goldglass Technologies comments: “Our philosophy is to make glass painting simple, bringing only technologies that save time and energy to the production process. We are always pleased to partner with like-minded companies such as RegaLead, and to be able to bring the automated application of ColorSpray to glass processors world-wide.”

Guy Hubble, Joint Managing Director at RegaLead adds: “At RegaLead we make it our business to work only with supplier partners who are experts in their field and GoldGlass are undoubtedly leaders in this market. As demand for back-painted glass continues to grow, many companies have been seeking automated solutions so this partnership with Goldglass is a key part of our overall package.”

Anglo European would like to congratulate Polyframe on their recent Excellence in Business Award, which was organised by The Yorkshire Post. Polyframe was the winner in the ‘Companies between £10m and £50m’ category, recognising its phenomenal growth over recent years. Iain Duncan Smith was the keynote speaker at the glittering awards evening held in Leeds.

Anglo European have been a long term supplier for Polyframe and have kept pace with their phenomenal growth over recent years, including the opening of five new trade counters in 2014. “The logistics of supplying

such a large fabricator with cut to size steel reinforcement is a complex operation” Comments James Lister, operations director for Anglo. “With our recent investment both in plant, vehicles and staff, Anglo are extremely capable of meeting their requirements, which is why we are the first choice for reinforcement by Polyframe”.

Anglo is now rolling out 10 million metres of steel reinforcement per year, to supply the ever growing number of customers., which will include Polyframe’s fifth factory opening in the New Year. When put into perspective in terms of scale and distance, if you lay four years of reinforcement production end to end,

they would circle the earth. “Working on these scales of production and lead times, we keep a very close eye on our warehousing and stock levels. We always ensures that we keep two steps ahead, therefore minimising any problems that may arise,” comments James.

Anglo European pride themselves on their customer service which is at the heart of the business and is one of the reasons they are now one of the leading suppliers of Steel reinforcement for the window and door market.

“We would also like to wish Polyframe the best of luck for the forthcoming G14 Awards on the 21st November, where they have been shortlisted for Fabricator of the Year”, comments James.

Genesis VS fabricator, Bison Frames, have enjoyed a strong 2014 with sales consistently outstripping targets. Due to their year on year growth, the company have invested in two new Maxi Mover vehicles to keep pace with delivery demands. The two new Maxi Mover vehicles were built and developed to Bison’s exacting specifications and have been liveried with the distinctive Genesis product branding. The Maxi Movers are low loaders at just 600mm from the floor and the inside has been specifically designed to safely transport their complete product range.

Mark Tetley, Director at Bison said, “We’re delighted that we’ve needed to make this investment, because it’s another indication that we’ve got our market offering right and our business is growing as a result.”

One of the reasons for Bison’s strong growth is the Genesis sliding sash window, which has taken the market by storm. The window is a result of extensive research and development to take the vertical slider to a whole new level of authenticity.

The Genesis window has a truly traditional appearance thanks to its jointed (not welded) frame and sash and the use of period hardware and a complete range of heritage finishes. The window has achieved the seemingly

impossible – acceptance for use on Grade II listed buildings and in Conservation Areas – and has attracted a great deal of interest, not to mention sales, as a result.

With innovation in the form of products such as Genesis and attention to detail as shown in the purpose-designed vans, it’s hardly surprising that sales are growing and more and more companies find out how much Bison has to offer.

“Listers Projects”, the commercial installation arm of Lister Trade Frames in Stoke on Trent, have recently completed a large contract in Droitwich for McCarthy & Stone Property Developments using Beaumont timber look windows and MetalTech curtain walling.McCarthy & Stone are best known as the largest developer of privately owned retirement property in the UK. Over the past 30 years they have built over 45,000 apartments nationwide and regularly win awards for their work.

Glazing works carried out by Listers on the Droitwich project included over

250 Beaumont PVCu windows in white grained profiles. The Beaumont window system was designed by Dempsey Dyer Ltd to bridge the gap between PVCu and high-end timber windows providing authentic joint and corner details. It was these windows that impressed the buyers as they fully met their specification.

Working closely with the client’s site management team, Listers completed the full installation over a 4 month period. The timber effect windows were complemented by four Aluminium entrance lobbies using the MetalTech Curtain Walling system. The combination of traditional and contemporary glazing products delivered a pleasing and practical solution for the overall project.

Simon Lawrence, Listers Projects’ Commercial Installations Manager, said

that “the scheme was challenging at times but very rewarding to work on. The works have resulted in an exceptionally well appointed building which delivered the client’s needs and fits well in the local community.”

Listers Projects have won a number of installation contracts this year due to their product range, reputation, full accreditation and their proactive approach to social responsibility. The division continues to develop lasting partnerships with a wide range of clients including Architects, Construction Companies, Property Developers and Self-builders and has reported a 77% increase in sales to September 2014.

Deceuninck’s marketing programme, masterminded by MRA Marketing, has been shortlisted in three categories of the 2014 Construction Marketing Awards (CMAs). Deceuninck is a finalist for Strategic Planning and Management, Best use of Press and Public Relations, and Best use of Advertising. The CMAs are seen as the barometer of marketing excellence in construction.

“Eighteen months ago we asked MRA Marketing for their help in doubling our sales and market share within three years,” explains Deceuninck UK Managing Director, Roy Frost. “The results are impressive. We’ve helped existing customers grow and attracted new customers who found their growth frustrated by suppliers.”

“On the strength of what we’ve already achieved, we’ve been given a new state of the art warehouse, capital expenditure to invest in more new products, and we’ve been set a more ambitious target, to get into the top three in the UK. A Top 3 position is Deceuninck’s natural place in most major world markets.”

MRA Marketing’s Director Lucia Di Stazio, says: “Our research told us that if other fabricators knew what Deceuninck customers knew they’d want to switch straight away, so we set out to tell the market and change perceptions with our ‘Why Deceuninck?’ campaign. And it’s working wonderfully. MD Roy Frost and Sales Director Rob McGlennon plus passionate and committed customers are the welcoming warm faces of Deceuninck. Prospects were amazed they could call Roy’s and Rob’s mobiles and speak personally to Deceuninck’s decision makers. Deceuninck is a lot more than its ‘pretty windows’. That personal touch is a big part of what Deceuninck is about. Being shortlisted for three CMAs recognises the strength of our marketing and our success in changing perceptions. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for 3rd December when the winners are announced!”

Quickslide had reason to celebrate at this year’s G14 Awards after being presented with the Training & Development Initiative of the Year trophy. The G-Awards judges decided that Quickslide’s submission, one that was personally signed by every member of the workforce because every one of them played their part in the review and in the continuing success it has brought the Yorkshire-based fabricator, was a worthy winner.

With the award presented by Mike Butterick, marketing director of sponsor Glassolutions, on a night hosted by Scottish comedian Kevin Bridges, Quickslide’s Chairman Adrian Barraclough couldn’t have been happier. “One nomination. One win. I’d say that was a pretty successful night, wouldn’t you?” he asked at the end of the ceremony held at the London Hilton on Park Lane.

“We’ve always regarded our people a big part of our commitment to World Class Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement so winning the award at G14 means that they can all be equally as proud of the trophy.”

The win comes after the company reviewed and revised all of its planning, training and development procedures with a plan to gain six-figure savings going forward. First identifying its shortcomings and their causes, they then looked at how to overcome each one individually. With every member of the workforce becoming accountable problem solvers, many training systems that seamlessly align each department to achieve the company’s vision were then implemented.

Quickslide is best-known for its acclaimed sliding sash windows, and the company has been instrumental in bringing this former niche product into the mainstream of the retrofit and new-build markets, but it also manufactures a wide range of other styles of windows and doors for trade, commercial and domestic customers.

Supalite Tiled Roof System has been certified by LABC making the whole planning and installation process much easier for installers. It is the latest development to be announced by Supalite and added to the many other outstanding features of the system, achieving LABC approval makes it easy to understand why Supalite is gaining so much installer approval.

Speaking for Supalite, Operations Manager Steve Hacking explained some of the immediate benefits of having LABC registration.

“For the many installers who use our roof system to replace existing conservatory roofs LABC approval makes the whole process really simple; they know that when they offer the Supalite system to a customer there are going to be no unnecessary delays, and the whole job can be completed in the minimum amount of time. They are not going to fall foul of any building regulation stipulations that they might not be aware of; specifying a Supalite Roof takes away all of the risk”.

“Installers of our roof system can be confident that they are offering a product which has been approved and is certified by the relevant authorities”.

“LABC registration is just the latest addition to our offering, and complements the on-going process of product development which has seen Supalite become a major part of the rapidly growing replacement roof market”.

cOnVerTing exiSTing exTenSiOnS inTO aLL year rOunD LiVing areaS…

While being ideal for new build applications the Supalite Roof System is primarily designed as a ready made replacement for existing roofs, helping to convert existing conservatories into all year round living spaces.

Offering vaulted ceilings to create internal space and lighting options, other homeowner friendly features such as an option to install LED down lighters externally into its unique fascia detail, large roof vents to allow the maximum amount of natural light, and a complete range of colour matched ancillaries makes the Supalite Roof System the perfect choice for homeowners wanting to gain much more from their existing conservatory.

OuTSTanDing THerMaL PerfOrMance…

What’s more the Supalite Tiled Roof system delivers outstanding thermal performance; with U value ratings as low as 0.15wmk2 available for the most extreme environments, and 0.18wmk2 as standard, the roof fully complies with all existing UK building regulations.

For homeowners, having a Supalite tiled roof installed takes away the extreme temperature fluctuations so often associated with a standard conservatory roof and offers them a new energy efficient product with the added benefit of lower fuel bills.

OuTSTanDing range Of cOLOur OPTiOnS…

Its consumer appeal is heightened further by the choice of colour options and tile and slate variations available making it wholly flexible to meet individual consumer choices.

There are five colours of tile and a further four natural effect slate options; all products have been extensively tested on live installations in the USA, Canada, and Australia over many years giving

homeowners the peace of mind that the 25 years guarantee they get on it can be fully supported.

OuTSTanDing MarkeTing SuPPOrT fOr inSTaLLerS…

For installers who want to offer the many benefits of the Supalite Roof System to their customers there is a full range of marketing support items available ranging from standard brochures to bespoke brochures, advertising templates, consumer price lists, postcards, flyers, and showroom banners along with fully assembled samples.

Steve takes up the story “We are really determined that installers of our products should have the maximum amount of support available to them. We want to expand the market share of the Supalite Roof, and the best way to do that is by supporting our installers in their own sales and marketing efforts”.

“We have a full range of marketing support options available for our customers, and our joint efforts will bring rewards all round”.

Adding LABC certification is the latest step along the way. If you would like to become a Supalite installer or manufacturer get in touch for further details of how to take advantage of the outstanding opportunities available to you.

Synseal have published a new technical brochure which summarises all available product designs in the company’s extensive Orangery Collection.Crammed with isometric cut-throughs and dimensioned section drawings to deliver hard facts detailing the different orangery solutions with no sales waffle, this Orangery Collection technical brochure was designed to support Synseal’s programme of

orangery installation workshops for fabricator partners and Synseal Registered Installers (SRIs) in Autumn ‘14. Recognising strong levels of interest in orangery extensions from UK consumers across a broad range of design and budget aspirations, these orangery workshops have proven so popular that an extra date has been added to meet demand.

Mark Schlotel, Synseal’s Head of Marketing, comments: “We can now offer two hybrid orangeries – the best-selling Global Summer and K2 Capella – as well as four fully structural orangery designs that can all be fitted with a choice of either Global or K2 lantern roofs: the wide-spanning Venetian, flat-roofed Rio, parapet-walled Integra and contemporary-styled Modena. This new technical publication details all these creative orangery product solutions in one handy reference source.”

TESTING

CENSolutions is widely recognised as the leading consultancy and test facility for the window, door and glazing industries and is pleased to welcome well established Ford Windows to its growing stable of customers. Philip Shackley, Managing Director of Ford Windows explains why the company decided to switch its certification supplier: “CENSolutions was working with one of our suppliers, Oakland Glass and through that relationship were able to give us advice on a Barratt Homes site we were working on at the time. We were immediately impressed with the way the team went over and above to help us all achieve the desired end result.

“We decided to switch our certification requirements to CENSolutions so that we could have the same level of practical support on an ongoing basis. It’s this that sets them apart from the competition in my opinion, along with the speed with which they react to any given request. It’s also essential to us that our certification supplier understands the New Build Window sector inside and out, which CENSolutions have proven time and time again.”

Ford Windows has achieved the CENSolutions Gold PAS 24:12 (with ER Certification recognised by Secured by Design), Silver (recognised by NHBC) and Bronze (CE Marking Certification) CMS Marks as well as the CMS Mark EN14351 for CE Marking compliance.

Wayne Rogerson, Joint Managing Director at CENSolutions says: “CENSolutions’ very reason for being is

to make certification easier for companies by explaining the processes involved in plain English and offering any additional support the customer may need. It’s always great when this approach pays off in a partnership with a truly quality focussed company like Ford Windows.”

Justin Ratcliffe, CAB ceo, highlights key Association meetings at Hull and Bristol and the results of the latest Q3, 2014 State of Trade Survey showing 93% of members predict sales growth in 2015. CAB ventured north in October to see the penguins and the sharks at The Deep in Hull, for the final Regional Members’ meeting of 2014. The magnificent Humberside aquarium attracted over 100 members and their guests.

The event also saw the launch of the CAB State of the Market survey figures for Q3, 2014 which highlighted the strength of the aluminium in building sector.

HeaDLineS:

• 87% of CAB members, on balance reported a rise in sales in Q3 compared with the previous year

• 93% of members reported that they anticipated sales rising over the coming year

• Costs continued to rise with 53% net balance reported a rise in costs in Q3 compared to a year ago largely due to wages and materials. 79% net balance reported that costs would rise in the next 12 months (75% in Q2)

• Headcount increased compared to a year ago for 73% net balance of respondents while 87% had forecast an increase in the year ahead (69% in Q2).

• Raw Material prices had become a key factor (21% of respondents) in ‘likely constraints on activity over the next 12 months’ after Capacity (36%) and Demand (29%)

The CAB mini-conference was opened by David Saxby, the co-founder of Architectural 00, a young practice building a national and International reputation.

David highlighted the use of aluminium in modern day architecture including his own RIBA award winning Manor Works, which won the prize for the Best Building in Yorkshire for 2014. Peter Foster, Technical Services Manager and Head of BIM Implementation at WACO (Premier Interlink) highlighted how BIM will save considerable amounts of money simply by reducing waste. He made it quite clear that as all centrally procured government construction projects must be delivered using BIM by 2016, not addressing the issue was simply not an option.

Finally, Geraldine Fleming, Vice President and Executive Director at Knowles, highlighted a number of issues critical to getting paid which was an effective introduction to her planned contractual awareness seminar to members in Bristol (below). One of the clear points that Geraldine emphasised was that getting the original contract correct was a much cheaper option than pursuing money after the event.

Geraldine who was also a qualified QS and solicitor, used her extensive experience within the supply chain to offer a number of useful tips for dispute resolution and arbitration. She also summarised a wide range of contract seminars that CAB hope to make available to members in 2015.

caB BreakfaST MeeTing, aT-BriSTOL

CAB’s November breakfast meeting at the At-Bristol science centre welcomed Neil Sansum, Architect Director, Bristol at BDP Architects who highlighted the wide use of aluminium by the RIBA Award winning practice. He focused particularly on the design process behind the Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI) at the University of Exeter’s Falmouth campus which achieved one of the highest BREEAM Outstanding scores in the UK at 91.57%.

After updates by the CAB Team highlighting their varied work on standards, regulations and best practise, Geraldine Fleming, Knowles presented a contractual awareness seminar entitled, ‘We’ve done the work, now how do we get paid?’. The punchy content, brilliantly conveyed included: contract formation; the quotation; post tender negotiations; the contract; formalities; correspondence and payment. Further seminars are planned in 2015, particular targeting CAB’s growing aluminium fabricator base.

For further information on any of CAB activities or membership of the Association in 2015 please contact Justin Ratcliffe on 07970 735689 or email [email protected].

GLASS & GLAZING

We are all consumers and as consumers how many of us rely on the feedback of others when deciding what and where to go to make our online purchases from booking a hotel room to ordering from Amazon? A fair number of us are changing the way we research and buy a company’s products or its services. The influence of social media and 24-hour online availability means that there is now always an opportunity to be reviewed, rated, ranked and tweeted for both businesses and individuals alike. The internet is proving to be a great source of opportunities for all business types including Certass.

Many lead generation services in the construction industry are turning to consumer feedback ratings as part of their provided services and as we all know, consumer feedback can be a double edged sword. Negative feedback can cause as much, if not more, damage to a businesses reputation than positive feedback can to

its success and sometimes fake or non-reputable reviews can discredit and permanently damage a business. Looking through the eyes of the consumer, the more information that can be found out about a business online and the more positive reviews that can be read by others who have had a good experience with the company, the more credible that business is.

TrustMark has identified that the vital feature of providing a consumer feedback facility was missing from their online TrustMark consumer search, which has now been rectified. The key difference with TrustMark’s consumer feedback facility is that the text entered by the

consumer is fully moderated by TrustMark ensuring that your business’s reputation is not damaged by spurious negative feedback. It is this level of vigilance that is the vital ingredient ensuring your business will receive a fair representation.

TrustMark will remove feedback left by a consumer where bad language is used, where an on-going complaint is known and for spam etc. The new Trustmark feedback facility prevents elongated threads of contentious conversation and the contractor has the right to reply to all feedback left by a consumer.

TrustMark’s new consumer feedback facility can record the results either online via TrustMark’s website or by the consumer completing a feedback card which you, the contractor can obtain from TrustMark free of charge in packs of 50. You can give this card to all of your customers

upon job completion. Your customers will need to answer all 5 star rating questions to record their feedback as well as leaving feedback in an open box stating the ‘type’ of work carried out along with their experience.

All Certass glazing contractors meeting TrustMark’s membership requirements get a free listing on the TrustMark website. This new feedback service is now live and relies on the contractor having provided Certass with the correct email address to receive this information from TrustMark. Additionally, the following trades can be optionally added – Conservatories, Insulation (Cavity / Internal / External Wall), Loft Insulation Installers, Builders, Carpenter & Joiners, Damp, Timber & Underground Water-proofers, Lead-work Specialists, Painters & Decorators, Plasterers & Renderers, Plumbers, Roofers, and Floor Covering Installers.

Letting consumers know that your company has taken their opinions and feedback seriously can only improve your customer satisfaction levels and allow you to ‘Win More Business’. To take advantage of this new facility making your company stand out get your free consumer feedback cards today by emailing TrustMark at [email protected] or by phoning their offices on 01344 747 241.

GLASS & GLAZING

Once again the generosity of the Glass and Glazing Industry has surpassed all of our expectations and we’ve been completely overwhelmed by the response we’ve received. It was no mean feat to beat last year’s pledges, but beat it we did, handsomely. There’s no surprise as to why our chosen good cause, Star Bereavement Service, was so well supported, helping children and young adults through such a wretched time in their lives is a noble endeavour, a task envied by no one.The upheaval bereavement brings to a childs day to day routine is for many reasons immeasurable and for some insurmountable. The loving care and guidance offered by Star Bereavement Service is a vital tool in bringing normality back to a childs life when ever so easily they can and sometimes do slip into a deep spiral of unhappiness and negativity.

We, both MyTrade.TV and the Glass & Glazing industry can only do a tiny part in bringing a smile back to the childrens faces and by donating a few Christmas Goodies, hopefully we can achieve that aim. By delivering a few barrow-loads of presents we can help them forget, for a moment their travails and remind them that there is a loving world out there that does care about them and does have their best interests at heart.

It only remains for us to say, and we think we speak on behalf of all of the generous supporters, we’d like to wish all the children and staff at Star Bereavement Service a very, very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

CENSolutions is widely recognised as the leading consultancy and test facility for the window, door and glazing industries which means its team of dedicated consultants and joint Managing Directors Mike Gaillard and Wayne Rogerson keep extremely busy. But the team always takes time to help those less fortunate than themselves, most recently by supporting MyTrade TV in raising money for the Star

Bereavement Support Service. Earlier this year Wayne took part in the gruelling National Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for a cause close to this heart, the National Kidney Federation. He and his brother raised £3000 for climbing the highest mountains in England, Wales and Scotland. CENSolutions is further supporting the charity by donating money instead of buying customers and colleagues Christmas cards this year.

Wayne Rogerson says: “As well as our direct support for the National Kidney Federation we have also supported our friends in the industry with their charity

efforts and are particularly proud to be supporting MyTrade TV’s generous efforts to raise money for the Star Bereavement Support Service in this special edition of the magazine.”

RegaLead is very proud to have given its support to a stunning project to mark the Centenary of World War 1. The window, which takes pride of place at St Matthew’s Church in Stoke-on-Trent, spans 50 by 10 feet and depicts six soldiers, loaded with kit, trudging across an embankment in Ypres, Belgium. With 48 panes of glass to fill and a deadline of the church’s remembrance service on 9th November, the project was no mean feat. So project organiser Frank McGregor employed the help of local school children to create

the designs for the border, and RegaLead to supply the coloured films.

Frank explains: “As part of the Hanley Team Ministry I try to take a creative approach to my church work in the community. In the run up to the centenary, many churches

have incorporated plaques and memorials and while thinking about what to do at St Matthew’s we realised that the church would really benefit from a stained glass window, so we thought this would make a great tribute and would look lovely with

the sun streaming through the coloured glass.

“We approached local businesses for a sponsor in order to buy the materials and one, Modern Glass, showed us a RegaLead brochure and recommended we speak to them. We were delighted when they offered to supply the coloured films and also cover the cost of 50% themselves. When it came to the Remembrance Service, people were really impressed with the impact of the tribute, which was particularly poignant as one of the soldiers depicted was local, and his niece was in the congregation. This project is ongoing for the next four years, and we plan to add more colour in time for next year’s service to keep it fresh and new. Thanks to RegaLead’s support we are more than able to do this and any leftover donations are going to Help for Heroes.”

Guy Hubble, Joint Managing Director at RegaLead adds: “We were more than happy to lend our support to this very worthwhile project. It is something very close to our hearts at RegaLead, particularly in light of the fundraising we did last year for Help for Heroes. Having attended the Remembrance Service at St Matthew’s, even I didn’t appreciate the size and scale of the window until I saw it for myself. I look forward to seeing how it develops over the next four years.”

For more information about decorative films from RegaLead visit: www.regalead.co.uk or call 0161 946 1164.

Solidor Group are pleased to announce the appointment of Joe Martoccia, as their new managing director, effective 15th December, 2014. Joe is a respected industry leader and brings considerable expertise and experience within the building, construction and home improvement markets to the composite door pioneer, which combined with significant investment from NorthEdge Capital, will build on Solidor’s market leading position.

Joe will be joining Solidor at a time when they are continuing to experience strong growth for their solid-core composite doors and it’s a business that’s steeped in success, thanks to their unique feature packed product and award-winning marketing campaigns. Joe’s appointment sends out a very clear message to the market that Solidor is committed to maximising the

investment by DW3 Product Group and NorthEdge, both in terms of its ongoing product development but also its market penetration.

Joe Martoccia, comments: ‘Solidor is an impressive business by any measure and has all the attributes to deliver incredible growth over the next couple

of years. It’s vital that we stay focused on our unrivalled innovation and product development strategy, but work hard to deliver the ultimate retail experience for our customers. Exciting times are ahead for Solidor and our loyal network of retailers.’

Gareth Mobley, CEO concludes: ‘We’ve hand picked Joe to become the new managing director of Solidor at a time when having a great team is of paramount importance during the next phase of our growth. I’ll also be involved with DW3 Product Group, so for me it is key to have a top operator like Joe at my side to help us to achieve our big plans for the group. He has the passion, respect and ability to take the business further forward for many years to come and we’re thrilled he’s joining us.’

Tradelink Direct is pleased to welcome Gary Kempster as IT Manager. Joining the world class manufacturer of doors, windows, conservatories and sealed units, Gary comes from a background of working in blue chip global companies including in a Directorial position. Gary explains: “I decided to make the switch from the larger blue chip companies

to a medium manufacturing business to leave the blue chip politics behind but lean is in my blood and I was keen to move to a true world class manufacturer. In the IT world lean means building solutions into the business networks before they are needed and sometimes even creating new systems to meet specific needs. This is exactly what I have done with the team at Tradelink to further improve efficiencies at their March and Mildenhall manufacturing sites as well as at their two Windowcenter operations.”

Jim Moody, Managing Director of Tradelink adds: “Gary has made a significant

impact on Tradelink’s business already. One of the first things he did was conduct a comprehensive staff survey to establish where everyone’s frustrations with IT lie so he could set about making their lives easier. Coming from much larger lean manufacturers than us, Gary

clearly has experience that we can benefit from and a completely fresh perspective on the way we have always done things in the window industry as a whole.”
