Debatable: Is the Personal Project a worthwhile endeavor for students?

The MYP Personal Project process creates opportunities of learning through personal inquiry and in-depth investigation.

Aims of the MYP Personal Project

The aims of the MYP projects are to encourage and enable students to:

- Participate in a sustained, self-directed inquiry within a global context

- Generate creative new insights and develop deeper understandings through in-depth investigation

- Demonstrate the skills, attitudes and knowledge required to complete a project over an extended period of time

- Communicate effectively in a variety of situations

- Demonstrate responsible action through, or as a result of, learning

- Appreciate the process of learning and take pride in their accomplishments

The MYP personal project is

- student-centered, age-appropriate, and long-term practical exploration

- designed as an independent learning experience

- assesses students’ ATL skills for self-management, research, communication, critical and creative thinking, and collaboration.

- encourages students to practice and strengthen their ATL skills, to connect classroom learning engagements with personal experience, and to develop their own interests for lifelong learning.

What is the MYP Personal Project?

Why are students completing the personal project?

• All students in the 9th and 10th grade are IB students.

• All 10th graders are required to complete the project as a culminating project for the Middle Years Programme.

Personal Project: highly challenging goal

• One of the most important components!

• SMART-PI: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-based, determines the product, and inspirational

A student takes a pictures of his or her neighborhood.

A student documents his or her self taught skills of photography.

A student researches photography techniques to create a photo essay about the relationship between young and older members of the community.

Personal Project: process journal

• The record of progress maintained by the student throughout the project.

- Written, visual, or a combination (must be able to share with advisor)

- Paper and electronic formats (at least 200 words)

- ManageBac- process journal (optional)

- Evidence selected to show development of all criteria (appendices of report)

- Students are responsible for maintaining the process journal and producingevidence to address the 4 objectives and selected ATL skills

- Something that showcases the process

- Can be the end result of the investigation, such as an invention

- Or, can be a visual representation of the process, such as a science fair type display or website documenting the learning

- Products will be displayed during a Personal Project showcase (March)

Personal Project: Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills

ATL skills provide a solid foundation for learning independently and with others, demonstrating learning, and reflecting on the process of learning.

• 5 categories (Communication, Social, Self-Management, Research, and Thinking).

The categories are organized into clusters and strands.

Students should focus on 1 strand from the specific clusters

Students should refer to the Approaches to Learning (ATL) skill strands and reflect on the development of the strands in process journal and project.

Refer to Appendix C to review strands related the specific categories.

Final Personal Project Assessment

• The Final Assessment must include a REPORT and PRODUCT.

• Students must receive an IBMYP grade of 4 or higher to qualify for DP and/or CP.

Personal Project: Parent’s role

• Communicate with your child about their personal project• Help your child maintain pace to complete the project• Support and engage in each step of the project• Encourage your child to communicate with their advisor for help• Review resources with your child• Provide space and opportunity to work on project outside of school

• Reminder: The majority of the work must be done outside of school
