Letter From Our Vice President of Operations

Actlabs, in Ancaster, Ontario, Canada, is our partner in providing technologically advanced mycotoxin analyses. Actlabs is a global enterprise certified under ISO 9001 and 9002 specifications. They are credentialed under various Canadian agencies and are FDA approved. Analyses are done with high-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectroscopy (LC-MS/MS). And no result is released until a trained technician carefully reviews each chromatogram for various parameters. This method gives excellent sensitivity and accuracy and permits determination of chemically related toxins within the sample. In each sample, 17 mycotoxins are analyzed and reports are optimized for best use by the client, including estimates of the degree of severity of the concentration(s) found.

Mycotoxin Highlights From the Beginning of 2020Not long ago, Agrarian Solutions published its inaugural US mycotoxin report. That report covered all of 2019 plus an additional emphasis on 4th quarter 2019. Today we are pleased to continue our plan to release three reports each year. Today’s report features the first four months of 2020. And, once again, I’ll ask that if you like these reports but have any suggestions, please get in touch! Also, unlike other published reports, our report on analyses is limited to the US dairy industry. We hope that you will find this approach beneficial in assessing your farms’ potential for mycotoxin issues.

The tables and graphs should be quite self-explanatory, but I’d like to mention just a few items for your consideration. During this period we analyzed 501 submitted samples, which puts us right on track for the typical year (~1,500) and is consistent with the fact that increasing numbers of farms are now using the silage they put up last fall.

On average, the first four months were typical so far as DON is concerned, going from a low of 788 to a high of 2029 in samples testing positive (91% of all submitted samples contained DON) for this toxin. Those averages don’t seem much out of ‘normal’ range. But looking closely at the data, many stood out from the crowd. For example, a TMR from Iowa tested at 5,490 ppb in early March. Another March sample (HMC) was 7,720 in PA. More worrisome were earlier samples: January 27th silage from Wisconsin came in at 5,780 and an HMC from PA showed 11,100ppb on February 6. The most salient item, however, was that only 9% of samples tested negative during the period.

And I always like to look for aflatoxin. A ‘worst’ case: Corn from NC showed 92 ppb plus over 25,000 ppb fumonisin. A good reason never to be dissuaded from using a broad spectrum toxin control (Select DTX!) in the ration in spite of current economics!

Enjoy the report and keep us posted on your thoughts for future editions.

QUALIFIERS

• Multiple mycotoxins will compound potential effects.• Toxic effect may be increased by body condition, health challenges, or stress.• Mycotoxins are not uniformly distributed in feedstuffs.• Small samples yield high test errors and underestimate mycotoxin contamination rate.• Low-level test results may still be cause for pro-active response.
