These recipes are simple yet satisfying — and leave you plenty of time to enjoy the company gathered around your table.
A SAVORY
BRUNCH
When shopping for a home, parents often marvel at properties that feature a pool
in the backyard. Once they see a pool, parents envision their kids having fun in the sun with friends and family.
While days spent poolside with the family are fun, they can also be danger-ous, especially for children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children ages 1 to 4 have the highest drowning rates, and fatal drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1 to 14 years. It’s no wonder then why parents place such a strong emphasis on pool safety. The
following are some preventative mea-sures parents can take to reduce their child’s risk of an accident in the pool.
Ensure children know how to swim. Teaching kids to swim might sound obvious, but many kids jump into pools before having any formal swimming training. But a child who has received formal swimming lessons has a signifi-cantly smaller risk of injury or drown-ing than one who has not received formal lessons. A study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Medi-cine found that participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent among chil-
dren ages 1 to 14 years. Local commu-nity centers as well as the YMCA likely offer swimming lessons for children, so parents should take advantage of these highly effective programs.
Pay constant attention when kids are in the pool. Kids should never be left unattended when in a pool. But accidents hap-pen even when parents are nearby. However, how quickly adults or others respond to a child in danger can have a significant impact on the outcome of an emergency situation.
Pool PointersPool Safety Tips for Parents
Parents should take safety measures to prevent kids from injury or drowning when swimming in a backyard pool.
FAMILY FeATUres
Have you ever beaten yourself up over a broken glass or a spill on your dining room chair? Life is full of “oops mo-ments,” which is why the Picker sisters — best friends and interior designers Tracy Hutson and Tanya McQueen — have chosen to celebrate and cleanup life’s wild moments, and then find ways to reuse discarded items.
“We live by the saying, ‘one person’s trash is another’s treasure.’ In fact, on our television show, we travel across the country to find reclaimed trash to turn into treasure for our store,” said Hutson. “However, you don’t have to travel far to find items worth transform-ing into beautiful pieces.”
The Picker sisters have provided a few easy tips to help you turn everyday trash into treasure:
Don’t trash the glass Leftover wine bottles after a dinner party? remove the labels and wash the bottles and they can quickly be trans-
formed into a water carafe. Or cluster several bottles together with fresh cut flowers and candles and you have an eye-catching centerpiece. Keep the corks too and throw into a spare vase for a table or countertop display.
Reuse old towelsDid you buy new bath towels and don’t know what to do with the old ones? Cut them into squares for dish rags or the size of a hand towel to store in the garage to dry your car after a wash. If you’re super handy, you can stitch the ends with a needle and thread. Other-wise, leave them undone and they’ll do the job.
Refresh key piecesLooking to freshen up your dining room chairs because they’ve endured their fair share of spills? Don’t throw them out. It may be easier than you think to reupholster the cushions with a

In the way of tax legislation, 2011 was a relatively quiet
year. However, that doesn't mean there aren't tax law
changes that will affect this year's tax returns.
"The changes enacted at the end of 2010 will still
impact this year's and next year's federal tax returns,"
says TaxACT spokesperson, Jessi Dolmage. "With the
debate over the federal budget and taxes unlikely to end
any time soon, who knows if the soon-to-be expired tax
breaks will be extended. So, take advantage of all your
benefi ts while you still can."

If you’re watching your pocket-book these days, as many peo-
ple are, you may be searching for affordable ways to celebrate Mom this Mother’s Day, May 13.
The good news is thoughtful-ness doesn’t need to cost a for-tune.
You can show you really care by taking the time to personalize your Mother’s Day activities and gifts. Here are some unique ideas that meet a wide range of budgets:
Food
You’ve probably been treated to many special home-cooked meals by Mom. Now it’s time to recip-rocate. Instead of taking mom out on Mother’s Day, prepare a spe-cial meal yourself. Remember, the day is about your mom, so plan the menu around all her favorite dishes. Offer to cook for her at her house so she doesn’t need to lift a finger.
Gifts
Don’t just opt for a box of choc-olates or gift you find in the first store you visit. These days, you can find personalized gifts that truly match Mom’s unique per-sonality.
“You can surprise and delight
someone most with a personal-ized gift, since there is noth-ing more unique,” says Mariam Naficy, CEO of a stationery store.
Personalized stationery sets make great affordable gifts for mom. Remember, the stationery a woman uses speaks volumes about her. Find something just right by browsing the selection of colors and styles at the stationery store.
You might also consider giving the gift of self-expression with a personalized journal. Make the journal truly hers before she ever sets pen to paper by including meaningful photos and inscrip-tions on its cover and interior.
Flowers
For a traditional flair, think flowers this Mother’s Day. Take your mother on a nature walk to pick wildflowers. Not only will you get to spend a great spring day together outside, you can cre-ate a unique bouquet at home us-ing flowers she picked herself.
When showing Mom you care this Mother’s Day, don’t let your budget hold you back. Thought-fulness and thriftiness can go hand in hand to make the day extra special.

WHO’S YOURLAWYER
Many people think that they have no need of a family law-yer. The fact is, however, that occasions may arise when a family lawyer is every bit as valuable as a family doctor or dentist. Many of the legal is-sues surrounding the average person do not involve traffic violations, personal injury, or crime. Instead, many people have need of a lawyer when it comes to real estate matters such as buying or selling prop-erty or a landlord-tenant dis-pute. Only a minority of such matters involve litigation. In-stead, consultation with a law-yer is needed to understand and carry out legal arrange-ments such a transferring a title. When these and other le-gal questions arise, whom are you going to call?
HINT: Very often real es-tate disputes involve the re-turn of earnest money after a real estate transaction goes bad.

The more quickly someone is able to intervene, such as ad-ministering CPR, the better the chance of improving the out-come.
Don’t rely on air-filled or foam toys. Parents should not rely on air-filled flotation devices such as “water wings” as a safety mea-sure. Such devices can deflate, putting kids at risk, especially if parents are under the assump-tion that the devices are enough to keep kids safe while they man the grill or mow the lawn. Even if kids wearing flotation devices have had swimming lessons, the likelihood kids will panic and forget those lessons if the devices deflate is significant enough that parents should pay constant at-tention.
Do not consume alcohol. Adults should never consume alcohol while children are swim-ming in the pool. Alcohol can negatively affect judgement, balance and coordination, mak-ing it more difficult to respond to a pool emergency should one occur.
Put all toys away after swimming. A pool and its surrounding deck
should not have toys lying around, as this only entices children to go into the pool area when Mom and Dad might not be
watching them. Put all toys away once a swimming session ends, so kids don’t feel the urge to go play by the pool unsupervised.

Okay, don’t panic. If you’re one of those home-
owners who’s been moaning about how hard it’s been trying to sell your house, your bargain-ing power — you remember that concept, right? — hasn’t been completely devastated just be-cause a flood of new foreclosures is expected to hit the market as a result of the recent $25 billion robo-signing mortgage settle-ment.
In fact, while studies have
shown your own property value could take up to another 4 percent hit if you’re within a quarter mile of a foreclosure ultimately snapped up at auction or taken back by the lender, the thing to remember is this: Most buyers to-day are only interested in homes that are move-in-ready so if yours isn’t ... well, there’s your problem.
“Buyers generally look at ‘as-is’ properties that need work, and say ‘I’ll pass,’ “ says Patsy O’Neill, a sales associate with a real estate agency. “That’s why
I tell clients it’s worth making certain strategic fixes if they’re looking for quicker and more profitable sales.”
So, which fixes are worth it, and which aren’t? Read on:
Worth It: Addressing major maintenance and safety issues. Would you buy a house with faulty electrical wiring? Enough said.
Not Worth It: Major bath renovations. “Whatever you do might not suit the buyer,” says
O’Neill, “and meanwhile, you’d have spent as much as tens of thousands of dollars.” Meaning, stick to things like repairing cracked shower doors, and save your visions of a modern-day spa for your own new abode.
Worth It: Ripping up old car-peting. Whether you replace it with new carpets or refinish the underlying wood floor is less important than getting rid of an eyesore.
Not Worth It: Major kitchen renovations. Same taste issue as
above.
Worth It: Anything that en-hances curb appeal. If the first thing prospective buyers notice even before exiting their cars is that your roof looks like it’s been whipped by a tornado, say, chances are you’ve already lost
the sale. “It’s a huge turn-off, and makes buyers predisposed to find even more things they don’t like.”
Not Worth It: Anything that screams clutter. The less of “you” there is, the more likely prospec-tive buyers are to imagine them-selves happily living there.
Selling Your House: Which Fixes Are Worth It to Lure Buyers?
