Before school, I pack lunch, shower, play with the cats and try to do a New York Times crossword.

07:00Leave for school

My husband and I try to get some exercise by cycling, but the hot season has a way of talking us out of biking, in which case we’ll get a taxi to the school.

07:30Teaching day starts

My morning classes consist of a 90-minute preparation period and two 45-minute 8th-grade classes.

11:10Lunch

Over lunch, I might have lunch supervision duty, a lunchtime meeting, or be running auditions for a showcase or other musical activity.

11:55Afternoon classes start

In the afternoon I teach two 45-minute 7th-grade classes and one 90-minute High School Choir class.

A Day in the Life of …A High School Music Teacher

15:30Teaching day ends

I often run after-school activities. On Mondays, I lead Girls Choir, an ensemble of amazing young women from Grades 6-11 (it makes Monday one of my favourite days of the week!) During festival season, I have rehearsals with groups of students for travelling or local festivals.

16:30Leave school

I have something planned most evenings. On Monday I meet up with my friends, on Tuesday I lead a community choir called ‘The Strand Singers’, Wednesday is frisbee day and then Thursday I spend cooking, reading or watching something on TV with my husband.

Ever wondered what it’s like to be a teacher?We met up with Katherine to find out more about her role as Music Director at Yangon International School, why she chose to become a teacher and how music instruction helps pupils to develop skills of analysis, interpretation and reflection.

Insights

My experience as a child in a great music program ultimately inspired me to become a music teacher myself. I’ve been teaching at YIS for four years so far and I’m still going strong! Myanmar is such a fantastic country to live in, and I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity. My role as the Music Director for the High School is to ensure that each student, no matter their musical background, knows more about themselves and the world through music. I want my students to leave my class not just knowing how to sing something, but how to understand the meaning of what they’re singing. I want them to develop skills of analysis, interpretation, evaluation, reflection and performance that will serve them in many capacities throughout their life.

Logistically, I teach about 180 students each year over a span of six grade levels. I am responsible for creating the curriculum for five different courses, in addition to organising two major concerts, a talent show, at least two musical fundraisers, graduation ceremony music, and at least two extra-curricular festivals.

If my work can inspire just one student to take up an instrument, sing a solo at a concert, or learn to love music just a little bit more, then I know that I’ve had a positive impact.

From student-led fundraising to large-scale donations, here’s a look at just a few of the fantastic projects that Myanmar’s International Schools are involved with.

Beyond the Classroom

The Secret Service @ MyanmarInternational School Yangon (MISY)

The Secret Service is a student-led volunteer group at MISY. Students work together to make decisions about which causes to support and how they will fundraise.

"This year we donated our money to an old persons’ home, a cancer charity, an orphanage and some environmental projects in Yangon. We also gave up our weekends to spend time at the old persons’ home and the orphanage. We hope to bring happiness to the people that we work with." - [ M I S Y S E C R E T S E R V I C E T E A M ]

Magic Bus Myanmar & Dulwich College Yangon

Dulwich College Yangon has supported Magic Bus Myanmar since March 2016. The project works with children in the townships of Thanlyin and Hlaing Thayar. The goal is to break children out of the cycle of poverty by nurturing them on a journey to livelihood, following an activity-based curriculum. Through the Dulwich International Schools Foundation (DISF) a donation of US$400,000 was made, with continued support coming from ongoing fundraising initiatives and events.

The New Children’s Choir & The International School Yangon (ISY)

The majority of children in The New Children’s Choir live in orphanages in Yangon - the choir hopes to provide them with educational and performance opportunities. ISY supports the project with rehearsal space, resources and expertise, and students from the school also take part in the choir. As the choir’s Founder-Director Sebastian See-Schierenberg points out, the project has enormous benefits for everyone involved; ‘it is rewarding to see young people achieve all these amazing things and to see their confidence grow each time they perform. It’s also valuable for the international school children to come into contact with children from differing backgrounds and to support and learn from each other’.

Social Circus Myanmar @ The French International School of Yangon (LFIR)

Social Circus Myanmar’s motto is ‘everyone needs to have fun’. They work with children to build confidence through circus skills workshops. Students at LFIR decided to organise a solidarity campaign to support a group of street children who have been taking part in the workshops for the past four years. Student’s took the fundraising into their own hands; they designed posters, sold cakes, and collected clothes, toys and donations. The project culminated in an afternoon spent learning circus skills together.

Where did you attend school?

I studied at the International School of Yangon enrolling in Pre-K in 1990 and graduating in 2002. It was a close-knit family because the student-teacher ratio was so small. I graduated in a class of 32 students, and the whole school body was around 400 students at that time. Now

As a teen, Phone Kyaw Moe Myint (Carl) represented Myanmar in sailing competitions across the globe. As an adult, he has turned his childhood passion into a rewarding career. As Vice President of the Myanmar Yachting Federation and Director of Ngwe Saung Yacht Club & Resort he shares his love of sailing with the next generation. In this interview, Carl reflects on his experiences in international education and shares the secrets to his success.

the school has doubled in size. Nevertheless, during my last visit it was nice to see some old teachers and employees. It’s still very homely.

What were you like at school?

I was very playful and energetic. Let’s say I kept my teachers entertained! I enjoyed music, art, anything that allowed me to be creative, and I loved sports too. I had a love-

hate relationship with chemistry, biology and maths. I did not like English literature - studying novels was not my cup of tea. I prefer to be doing something; I love doing projects, especially with teammates, and creating or building things. I was in almost every play or musical the school hosted starting from Grade 6.

Do you think you gained anything from taking part in the school musicals?

Taking part in the musicals changed me from being a shy kid to being more open on stage. That was definitely a benefit. As an adult, most people will likely end up being on stage at one time or another; giving a speech or a presentation. At least if you’ve performed as a child, then it’s not the first time you’re doing it.

You took up sailing at the age of 9, how do you feel your involvement with the sport has shaped you?

It turns out that on the first summer sailing course that I took I met the people who, to this day, I still call my best friends.

Sailing taught me to challenge myself and to set goals. The first time I was on the national team, I went to South Africa. The sea was only 15 degrees, the wind was strong, and I had never competed in the open sea before. Of course, it was scary, there were even times when I wanted to quit, but this was a valuable lesson; in life you will be thrown challenges, there will be storms, and there will be big waves, it’s going to be tough but you have to pull through and finish the race. In that sense, sailing played a big part in developing who I am.

University

Where did you attend university?

I attended Colorado School of Mines, which is an incredibly tough school with a very high drop-out rate. At that time my father was already working in the oil and gas business, so he wanted my brother and me to get petroleum degrees. Initially, I did study petroleum engineering; however, three years into the course I realised that it was not a good fit for me, so I changed my major. It was a great thing for the world that I did not become an engineer. I graduated with a BA in Economics and a Minor in Petroleum Engineering. Very few students have that qualification because you have to take so many courses!

What was your experience of studying in the USA?

For me, the best experiences came outside of the classroom. Attending University abroad was a significant milestone in my adult life - being away from home for the first time I had the opportunity to learn a lot of life’s lessons. I loved the college friends I met and I loved the culture. It was one of the best times of my life.

Back in Myanmar

Tell us about your career, what do you do now you’re back in Myanmar?

I do many different things in my career, although nothing to do with petroleum and economics! My primary role is as Vice President of the Myanmar Yachting Federation (MYF). As a former sailor and athlete, I have an enormous love for the sport, but this is not just a passion but a necessity; the programme needs someone to oversee all the operations of the Federation. I’m also Director of Ngwe Saung Yacht Club

& Resort (NSYC) which was built to host the 2013 SEA games. As well as being a resort, the yacht club acts as a base for sailing activities. It is a training ground, a location for races, and has a sailing and surf team made up of locals who are supported by the NSYC. I’m also the Co-Founder and Director of a clothing brand.

Your various roles must keep you busy, but you’re still involved in lots of voluntary activities. Can you tell us more about those?

Since the beginning of June 2016, I’ve been Country Coordinator and Founder of Trash Hero Myanmar. I spend a lot of my personal time on this project. So far 10,000 volunteers have participated in over 100 clean-ups to collect 40,000 kilos of trash across Myanmar. Trash Hero has changed my life and my lifestyle. It has opened my eyes to the devastation that pollution is bringing to our world and motivated me to take action. It is the individual responsibility of every human to protect our planet.

Why do you think volunteering is important?

We all have jobs and need to put food on our plates and a roof over our head, but we must not forget to be grateful. I have been given a privileged life and could not ask for anything more so I feel it is my duty to give back whenever I can. From an environmental perspective, I work with many young kids, and I feel a responsibility for their future, especially when it comes to pollution.

Reflections

To what do you owe your success?

There’s no doubt about it; I owe my success to my parents. I wouldn’t be here today if they hadn’t supported me, both emotionally and financially. They’ve given me a lot of opportunities.

Sailing has also positively shaped my life, and I wish the same for others. I feel grateful to still be a part of the sport and have the opportunity to share the experience. My involvement in sports has taught me so much about life and has opened many doors for me.

What role has education played in your life?

I am grateful for the lessons my teachers taught me which I’m now passing on to my young sailors; respect your elders, be responsible, don’t litter, don’t be a bully. Getting these basics right is so important.

Ultimately, I think what school taught me is; here's a problem, find the solution. Colorado School of Mines was arduous. At times, it was mentally and emotionally heartbreaking doing something that I wasn’t good at, but I made it somehow. That struggle taught me how to find answers and face challenges.

What role do graduates who have studied abroad have to play in the future of Myanmar?

That's hard to say because of course, it’s up to the individual. Nevertheless, Myanmar suffers from a brain drain, so the country definitely needs their expertise. As a repat you know your country, you know the

culture and can play a significant role. I’ve seen a lot of repats do great things.

Regardless, I hope that those who have these opportunities, as I did, remember where they came from, because having the chance to travel abroad, let alone get an education or job outside of Myanmar, is very fortunate.

You have successfully gone through the international education system and now work with young people in Myanmar. What advice do you have for parents?

In my experience, I think it is essential that children spend time outside of the classroom; I have seen first hand the benefits of letting a child try new things and find something they love doing. This could be any extra-curricular activity, ranging from music to art or sports. They may not be good in the beginning, or at all, but the point is for them to learn the process of becoming better

at something and not giving up. Children also need to have time to play and have fun.

I’d also encourage parents not to force their dreams upon a child to make them pursue a career that is not right for them. Unlocking a person’s potential is the most rewarding thing, but this means a certain amount of freedom must be given, along with lots of love and support. When a child finds their passion and pursues it, that’s when they become unstoppable. That’s how leaders and champions are made.

It’s widely accepted that reading is an important habit, and most of us guiltily acknowledge that we should spend more time doing it. Those who read regularly tend to have a more extensive vocabulary, a better understanding of grammar, a stronger ability at adapting their writing style and even increased emotional intelligence and empathy. As an English teacher, I can usually predict how much time a student spends reading by studying their writing: regular readers are more likely than their peers to describe characters and settings in creative detail, have a sophisticated grasp of structure and even analyse texts in more depth.

Along with the benefits above, reading provides escapism from the speed of modern life. Unlike scrolling through apps,

social media feeds, Youtube or Netflix, reading a book requires a time investment and patience. When we immerse ourselves in a story, we get to check out from our real lives for a while. We make friends with fictional characters who give us the gift of a new perspective. We reflect. We slow down.

However, therein lies a problem. For some students, reading is second nature: they require no persuasion to curl up with a good book. For other students, reading is a struggle, a chore, perhaps even seen as a punishment. Is it fair that those who naturally love reading gain all the benefits above, when the latter group don’t?

I don’t think it is. I think we owe it to young people – our students and children – to nurture in them a love of reading. It isn’t

an easy feat: books have to fight against smartphones, laptops and TVs, but if you help a child to find joy in reading, you have given them a gift that will keep giving for the rest of their lives.

If your child is already an avid reader, then you have won the jackpot. Talk to them about what they are reading and about how they feel about characters and situations.

If your child would rather watch paint dry than read – all is not lost. It might take a while, but everyone can learn to love reading; they just need to find the right book.

Read

Does your child ever see you reading? This might sound simple, but I cannot emphasise it enough: if you want your child to read, you must show them what a reader looks like. Children need to have reading modelled to them, so consider how you could build some reading time into your family life – whether in the evenings, weekends or during holidays – so that your child sees that you value and enjoy reading.

Ask about what they are reading

It’s amazing what you can find out about a young person in an animated conversation about a book. Talk to them about what they are reading, and you may be surprised by the insights that they have.

Don't dictate their reading choices

My brother Joe hated reading growing up – he was much more interested in playing, watching and discussing sport. It was only when my parents gave him Steven Gerrard’s autobiography for his 12th birthday that he saw any benefit in picking up a book. Now he has shelves full of sporting autobiographies – and won’t stop talking about them! If your child is into Marvel films, then encourage them to read graphic novels. If they love computer games, you could consider getting them a subscription to a games magazine. If students begin to see reading as an extension of a hobby or passion they already have, they will not see it as an arduous task but instead as something they enjoy.

Make books available

A dearth of books is a barrier to reading. Make sure you have books available all the time; with their toys, in the car, in their bedroom. It’s a great way to encourage them to reach for a book when they have time to fill.

Give them books in their home language

Students will gain so much from learning to enjoy reading whatever language the book is in. Even if the book is not in English, it will still benefit their knowledge of characters, structure and description which will undoubtedly have positive effects at school.

Give them books appropriate to their age and level

Children and teenagers often disengage from a book if they feel it is aimed at a younger audience. If your child is new to English, then Barrington Stokes is a great publisher for teenagers: their content is aimed at secondary students, but the reading age is much lower. Ask your child’s school whether they have books suited to non-native speakers and have a look on Amazon too.

Practise everywhere

For younger learners, there are countless opportunities to practise reading and reading skills. Point out signs and letters wherever you see them. Help your child to develop inference skills by encouraging them to infer meaning from what they know about the world around them. For example, if the traffic lights are red, ask them what colours will come next and what they mean. If the clouds are grey and dark, encourage them to predict what might happen next. This skill will help them when they read stories.

Promoting Reading: The Literary Canon

At The British School Yangon (BSY) we are privileged to have students from a wide range of nationalities and cultures: some are native English speakers and others are comparatively new to the language. Because the students have been schooled all around the world their ‘cultural capital’ – knowledge and insights that they gain from reading different stories – is very diverse.

Our aim this year has been to develop a shared cultural capital through a Literary Canon: an annual collection of books that students, staff and parents aim to read to promote conversations with each other.

This year’s secondary Literary Canon was ‘Wonder’ by R. J. Palacio. Many of our students and staff have enjoyed reading the book and have engaged in conversations about the issues it raises, which range from bullying to empathy. For next year’s Literary Canon, we invited parents, staff and students to suggest and vote on books that they felt explored interesting ideas or topics. This has resulted in a diverse and exciting collection of 20 books.

No one will be forced to read these books, but if students, staff and parents choose to engage with them, they will be part of a community in which they can discuss and share their different perspectives, learnings and ideas with each other. We aim to make reading enjoyable and accessible for all.

Curricula, methods and approaches most commonly used in international pre-school settings in Myanmar

I Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) The EYFS is the curriculum set by the UK government which sets the standards for the learning of children from birth to 5 years. It is a play-based curriculum with seven core areas; communication and language, physical development, personal, social and emotional development, literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, expressive arts and design. American CurriculumThere is no single curriculum followed in America. Many international schools, therefore, follow the curriculum for a particular state and adopt the common core standards for English and maths. A regional body in America usually accredits international schools that use a US curriculum. American based pre-schools generally take a play-based approach to learning, and as with any school, the admissions team will be able to answer future questions about the curriculum they follow.

Montessori MethodThe Montessori method views the child as naturally eager for knowledge and capable of initiating learning in a supportive, thoughtfully prepared learning environment. It is an approach that values the development of the whole child. Learning is pupil-led, with the teacher as a guide and students learn concepts from working with materials, rather than by direct instruction (Source: amshq.org)

Reggio Emilia ApproachThe approach is based on the idea that children are full of potential and capable of driving their learning. The curriculum, which is not prepared in advance, is pupil-led and project-based. The teachers’ role is to arrange the learning environment. Significant to the approach is the ‘100 languages of children’; the assertion that children have many ways of expressing themselves - such as singing, dancing, writing - and should be given the opportunity to do so.

Singapore Nurturing Early Learners (NEL) framework (iTeach)This framework is underpinned by the idea that children are curious, active and competent learners. The framework is spelt out in six principles: an integrated approach to learning, teachers as facilitators, engaging children through purposeful play, authentic learning through quality interactions, children as constructors of knowledge and holistic development. Glossary of TermsAdult:Child Ratio In a school or childcare setting this refers to the number of qualified adults present in the classroom compared to the number of children. In high-quality programs, there is usually a smaller number of pupils per adult.

Bilingual EducationWhen instruction takes place in two languages, usually with the aim that pupils will become fluent in both.

Child-ledSometimes referred to as child-centred or student-led, this is when children are encouraged to determine the direction of their own learning; teachers are there to facilitate and guide learning, rather than dictate it.

Developmentally AppropriateThis practice takes into the consideration both the age and developmental stage of the children, individually and as a class. The aim is to ensure that activities are neither too simple, nor too complicated, and therefore enable each child to learn and grow.

Fine & Gross Motor SkillsFine motor skills are used for actions that require control of the small muscles of the body. E.g. drawing, cutting with scissors and handwriting. Gross motor skills require the development of large muscle movement and control. E.g. crawling, running, and jumping.

Peer LearningWhen children learn from and with their peers - each other. Children can learn a great deal by playing together, explaining their ideas to each other and watching how other children complete tasks.

Play-based LearningTo learn while at play. It is widely accepted that young children learn effectively through play. This includes free play directed by the children themselves, and guided play, which has some level of teacher involvement.

Pre-reading & Pre-writing ActivitiesActivities that young children engage in before they can read and write that help to develop the skills that are necessary for these tasks. For example, pointing at each word on the page when reading a book aloud to a child.

Project-based LearningThis is a child-centred approach in which children learn through active exploration of a real-world problem or question, often in collaboration with other children, and guided by the teacher. For example, starting a school garden to learn about life-cycles.

School ReadinessA term used to describe how socially, emotionally and physically ready a child is to successfully transition to, and perform well in the early years of school (usually Kindergarten or Year One depending on the school).

Social-emotional DevelopmentRefers to the development process whereby children learn to identify and understand their feelings and the feelings of others, manage their emotions and behaviour, and establish and maintain relationships with their peers and adults.

Whole ChildThis is every aspect of a child’s development; intellectual, social, emotional, physical and creative. Every child develops in these different areas at their own rate and may not be equally developed in all areas. For example, a child may have solid intellectual skills but less developed social skills.

A lot of the work that we do is inspired by the passions and interests of the children. The teachers act as observers to see how children use materials, perceive things, and what interests come up to then foster further exploration into those interests. It’s less of the teacher having the knowledge and giving it to the children and more of the teachers, children and even parents learning together. Academics are not put to the wayside, but they come in a more organic and meaningful way. When children learn through things that they’re interested in, they can become even more skilled academically because it’s meaningful work for them rather than something they have to do.

Children are capable and can do so many things. It’s easy to underestimate a three-year-old, but they can do so much if you believe in them and give them the opportunity. Yes, we can do it for them, but they will learn more if they can do that for themselves.

We aim to focus on process rather than product at Dulwich College Yangon (and in many early years settings around the world); each child is on their own, unique learning journey and needs time to develop new skills. The development of fine motor skills is one such example; parents may worry if their young child is not ready to hold a pencil yet, or has an unconventional pencil grip. However, children have to gain strength in their fine motor skills, and there are many steps to this before they are ready to write and draw. This takes time. They need opportunities to play with malleable materials such as plasticine. They need time to experiment in free, unstructured ways with paint brushes such as using them with water outside on the ground. Children may improve their fine motor skills by scratching lines into the mud with a stick or by using their fingers to spread glue around a tray or by using scissors, tweezers, tools or Lego... the opportunities are endless! However, if these sorts of opportunities are not provided, and a child is put under pressure to form letters before they are ready, they can quickly lose interest, motivation or confidence.
