‘My Sister’s Keeper’

At first glance, the audience sees the characters played by Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin. The character played by Sofia Vassilieva is only seen after this, as she is separate from the main picture, and down at the bottom of the poster. This is important because the climax of the film sees her character as the basis for the action of the film, but this is hidden behind the actions of Anna (Breslin) and her mother Sara (Diaz). This storyline is partially shown from this poster, but won’t be recognisable until they know the story.

The title ‘My Sister’s Keeper’ is shown in plain white writing, in order to not distract from the images. However, it is still obvious to the audience, and doesn’t blend in like the rest of the text does. This allows it to be eye catching.

The rest of the writing on the poster tells the audience important information about the film. It tells the main, and most recognisable actors (Cameron Diaz, Abigail Breslin, Alec Baldwin, Jason Patric, Sofia Vassillieva and Joan Cusack), and the director - Nick Cassavetes, who also directed ‘The Notebook’, which informs the audience of which genre to expect.

The use of the colour blue in the background adds emphasis to the images in front of it. It also connects the photos, as the bubbles from the bottom image are replicated in light in the top. The use of blue specifically also is important, as it has connotations of hospitals, which play a large part of the film. However the laughing images contrast this, playing on the audiences expectations.

The poster is overall quite light, which is heavily contrasted with the subject of the film – which deals with cancer, designer babies, and organ donation. The poster and the trailer are contrasted, which shows the audience that at the end, the film is actually about love, and not death.
