By Liesl Moldow T here is nothing “Great” about a depression. With many people losing their jobs and people scrambling to survive, our economic situation is frightening. I cringe when I listen to the economic news on the radio. It truly is depressing. With these thoughts to cheer me, I recently drove to Paye’s Place gym in San Carlos for my daughter’s Special Olym- pics Basketball Tournament. I assumed this was a practice and was excited to have the place to ourselves. I pulled into the crowded parking lot, and searched franti- cally for my daughter, realizing I missed the memo saying it was not a practice but the real deal. I found Madeline amidst a cheering group of kids from her buddy class at Encinal School in Atherton. Mrs. Stroh’s class had joined ours to participate in the tour- nament — another detail I’d missed. As mothers of missed memos do, I pretended I knew all about it and promptly joined in the fun. They had set up specially sized basketball hoops, and there were various stations for our kids — a passing station, a dribbling station, etc. Instead of jumping in to assist Madeline, I stood back while her two buddies, Olivia and Madelyn, helped her dribble. One held her hand, and the oth- er bounced the ball. It worked for them, and seemed to work for Madeline. Once they finished the task, they moved on, dragging Mad- eline between them, hand in hand. Now Madeline can walk, but slowly, and most people are very careful as they assist her. Not these girls. They meant business and Madeline scuffled along with them in their determined wake. The passing station was next, and noticing it would be dif- ficult to do the usual bounce passes, they promptly plopped Madeline on the floor and sat beside her, creating a triangle to roll the ball back and forth. They figured a pass is a pass and they were going to accom- plish their goal. The girls noticed me lurking around and when I told them I was Madeline’s mom, one of them pointed to Madeline’s plas- tic trach tube and asked, “What’s that thing in her throat?” I began to air my canned speech. “Well, Madeline was born with special differences due to a chromosomal anom- aly ... blah, blah.” They looked at me blankly. I could tell they weren’t buying it. I shrugged and said, “It helps her breathe.” That did it. They nodded, completely satisfied, and heaved Madeline from the floor, hauling her off to another activity. It struck me as odd that they didn’t ask why Madeline was half as tall as they were, or why she doesn’t talk. They didn’t seem to care that she has the mental age of a newborn, or that she still wears a diaper. No, they just wanted to know what that thing was sticking out of her throat because it kind of got in the way of the basketball. Their practical acceptance stunned me. Barb’s Red Cross adventures continue

help those who might be affected by the imminent flooding of the Red River, which runs the length of the state, on the border between North Dakota and Min-nesota. My aunt, Vinnie Biberdorf, a long-time Red Cross volunteer and currently the co-chair of disaster volunteers for the Silicon Valley Red Cross chapter, for which I volunteer, loaned me cold weather gear. As I scrambled to get ready, I told her that it would be fun if we both could get sent to work a Red Cross disaster together. “I can’t go,” she said. “You always have all my stuff!” In the week before my arrival, the residents of Fargo and nearby com-munities, which have a combined population of nearly 200,000, filled and placed an estimated six million sandbags. They dug up soccer fields and filled trucks with clay for building taller dikes, some reaching far over the heads of those building them. Thousands of people took off from school and worked to help their neighbors protect themselves from the record high waters — and their hard work paid off. The dikes held the flooding to a minimum, despite the river cresting at 22 feet above flood level. The local residents proved that being prepared for a disaster can make all the difference. Because Fargo was badly flooded in 1997, and had experienced a number of smaller floods since then, the community was well prepared with sandbags and materials for building clay dikes, and the equipment and plans for volunteer labor

needed to build them. Once the dikes were built, the local police and the National Guard patrolled them 24 hours a day, calling for backup at the first sign of a leak. Even so, by April 3, the Red Cross had utilized 1,272 workers in the area. They had opened 10 shelters, served more than 65,000 meals, supplied close to 5,000 health consultations, and provided 44 emergen-cy-response vehicles, which were bringing food and sup-plies where needed. They fed the volunteers as they sandbagged, and brought warm drinks to those guarding the dikes deep into the night. My job was to drive into flooded areas after the water

had receded to estimate how much damage had been done to residences. My partner, a retired 6-foot-2-inch military pilot, and I drove hundreds of miles through a starkly beautiful countryside covered with snow, ice and water. For the first time I realized what “flat” really means. Much of North Dakota was once a prehis-toric lake, which left behind rich soil and miles and miles of perfectly flat terrain when it dried up. Find out how to help the Red Cross prepare the local community for a disaster by visiting the Silicon Valley Red Cross Chapter Website at: sili-convalley-redcross.org. A

did not spend time lamenting her limitations, but focused on what she could do — even if they had to lend a hand to get the job done. I sat back, enjoying the mael-strom of madness that reigned that morning. As I later drove away from the gym, the eco-nomic news on the radio didn’t

bother me as much. I took a cue from some very smart fourth-graders who taught me how to put it in per-spective. I decided not to dwell on the why’s of what brought us to this dismal point, and instead turned my focus to the more practical how’s. How to just deal with set-backs, how to make the most of what you do have, and how to move on. If you have to adjust

your basket, you do it. If you have to be more creative to get the job done, you do it. But more important, they reminded me that if you have to haul someone else along who needs a bit more help, well, you just do it. A

TOWN OF PORTOLA VALLEY

ARCHITECTURAL AND SITE CONTROL COMMISSION RECRUITMENT

The Town Council is seeking an individual to serve on the Town’s Architectural and Site Control Commission (ASCC). The ASCC is responsible for review of all proposals for significant new development in Portola Valley, including new homes, major residential additions and changes to commercial and other non-residential uses. The ASCC, with staff support, administers the Town’s design plans and guidelines, for the purposes of promoting the visual character of the community, minimizing disturbance to the natural setting and ensuring that improvements are properly related to their site and adjacent uses.

The ASCC consists of five (5) members appointed by the Town Council. Regular meetings are held at 8:00 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month. Since most of the ASCC work is property specific, often on the Monday meeting dates special late afternoon field sessions are conducted to fully consider site and area conditions. The ASCC process involves significant interaction with existing and new Town residents, architects, landscape architects, and contractors.

If you are interested in serving on the ASCC, please submit a letter of interest to the Town Council by Friday, June 5, 2009.
