For as long as I can remember growing up, my dad got up early, worked long hours, and then returned home to chip away at a seemingly endless list of ‘to-do’s’ that usually consisted of a rattling kitchen appliance, a leaky car tire, a bedroom wall that needed painting, or hanging a shelf mom needed hung. Often, he worked well into the night hours and then transitioned to outside chores on Saturdays. I don’t ever recall him complaining about his lack of personal time or a need for a night out with the guys. Providing for his fam-ily and making our lifestyle comfortable were elements of his job. He kept our household polished by keeping things working properly and keeping us happy. He did his job well.

This month, we pay tribute to dad for his character and responsibility with some tips from locals who are ready to help with projects around the house. You’ll meet a neighborhood “Super Dad” and gain a wealth of knowledge through a Financial Workshop offered

by a local professional, as well as score a tip for Dad to take to the green. If it’s family time you’ve got in mind, there’s Movie Night, once again, near the lake and Andy’s Foundation article reminds us that continually reinforc-ing the strengths in our children is absolutely essential

to creating enthusiasm in them for their future.

I suppose it’s the detailing and the ‘elbow grease’ that makes us shine in many aspects of life. Those details can help us focus on a prob-lem until it is completely resolved, present clear ideas to a group, proj-ect and self-manage our time and finances - details I’ve learned from

observing my dad. His examples of perseverance hold the following truth: Buffing through the tough stuff really does produce a shine. I’m honored to have this sum-mer month to pay tribute to the adoration of the details learned from my dad. I hope you will, too.

The Creative Arts Academy presents – Stagestruck: A Musical Theater Workshop. This course explores theater including basic stage anatomy, acting, auditioning, improvisa-tion, singing, blocking, and choreography with a special “spotlight on theater”. Students will learn costume design, make-up and playwriting. Students will arrive the first day ready to audi-tion for the final production. Week two includes a showcase of individual talents and by the end of week three; the cast will perform an original, full-length production entitled Glitter, Gold and Grimm: A Musical Comedy. Each student will receive a summer camp T-shirt and professional headshot photo. Students need to bring a sack lunch and water bottle daily. The Estrella Foothills Pythagorean Society would like to announce the results of its first annual Middlementary Math Bonanza, which was an amazing inaugural success. The 4th through 6th grade individual finalists were: Ricky Robinson from Westar Elementary in 3rd place; Nathan Ashok from Palm Valley Elementary in 2nd place; and Tyler Kamarata from Westar Elementary in 1st place.

The winning teams in the 4th through 6th grade category were: 3rd Place Palm Valley 4th grade team composed of Eden Prieve, Cameron Decter, Caleb Gray, and Nathan Ashok; in 2nd place Westar Elementary 6th grade team composed of Cameron Runyan, Ricky Robinson, and Tyler Kamarata; and in 1st place Palm Valley 5th grade team composed of Jerome Sims, Matthew McCaskill, Johnathan Sangrilo, and Jessica Graham. “Green Team”

Nine educators at Estrella Foothills High School hosted a celebration exhibi-tion of Earth Day late last spring in the school’s cafete-ria. The event was designed to raise awareness of the importance of recycling and conserving resources, as well as to promote a future student “Green team.” Some of the things implemented by the group thus far: computer monitor display hibernate time reduced from 20 minutes to 10 minutes, paper saving tips and techniques shared among teachers, green pledge for faculty and staff and turn off light switch signs with art club students.

The future earth-conscious group of students will organize and partici-pate in events designed to encourage conservation while raising recycling awareness, designed to benefit our planet. The Earth Day Celebration event provided a number of stations. One of those was an opportunity for students to sign up and join their teachers in pledging to save energy. A promise pledge to turn off lights upon leaving a room, utilize natural light when possible, shut off computers when not in use, and utilize recycling bins for a number of recyclable items, earned students a chance to win a $10 iTunes gift card. Another chance to grab a free iTunes card was made possible by guessing the exact amount of plastic bottles in a recycle bin. Bob Tippie was the correct guess. Additional stations demonstrated the length of time that certain products, such as plastic, aluminum, cardboard and batteries took to disintegrate in landfills. Twenty-two students signed up to take the ‘green pledge.’ Students interested in joining the Green Team should contact Chris King in the Mathematics Department at EFHS or Julie Dubay at [email protected].

Did you know? It took a period of seven years to develop the idea of Earth Day, which began in 1962. Senator Gaylord Nelson invented the idea, due to his concern about the state of the environment over the course of several years. He came up with the idea to convince President Kennedy to give visibility to the issue by going on a national conservation tour, which ultimately ‘flowered’ into Earth Day.

Taking Your Social life Seriously

They’re at it again! Month after month the Social Committee assists the Management Company in Estrella by planning and scheduling events, activities, and on-going celebrations to enhance resident lifestyle in our community. Is social connection to the community something you might enjoy? Jump on board as a volunteer for a large variety of events for all age ranges or bring your interest in our community to the table at a board or committee discussion. Getting involved is as simple as stopping by the Starpointe Residents Club or emailing our Lifestyle Director, Holly Aguilar at [email protected]. You can search the community website, www.lifeinestrella.com for a list of groups and activities and read about those events in My Hometown Estrella.

Although this small group that makes up the Social Committee can’t promise they’ll pull the perfect bingo ball to make your card a winner, they are definitely planning activities designed to enhance the enjoyment of liv-ing in Estrella and encourage gatherings that bring together friends and potential friends.

The group is currently working on a variety of entertaining sum-mer projects, including Fishing with Dad, just in time for Father’s Day. Youngsters and their dads are sure to enjoy a couple of reminiscing hours, lakeside on the morning of June 18. Stroll down to the Yacht Club just before 8 am to receive a fishing pole, some bait, and a bit of education for young anglers, compliments of Arizona Game and Fish.

Remember, each and every community member is valuable, with great potential to offer unique talents and valued input to Estrella. Take your com-munity seriously – Volunteer!

The Estrella Book Club will meet on Wednesday, June 8 at 10 am. In June, they will be reading “The Same Kind of Different as Me” by Ron Hall and Denver Moore. The story revolves around the unlikely friend-ship that develops between two men of very different backgrounds and changes each of their lives. What does it take to earn an A+School award? Pupil focus, culture, active teach-ing and learning, curriculum, leadership and community involvement are some of the assessment factors that the Arizona Educational Foundation studied before presenting Estrella Foothills High School with the award of distinction in May. The Foundation found EFHS outstanding in the areas of performing and culi-nary arts facilities, college and career preparation programs and the feel of community throughout the campus.

“Being an A+ School was a goal that EFHS set many years ago. As the school grew, the goal of being an A+ School provided a standard or expecta-tion that we could work to achieve,” said Principal Leslie Standerfer.

EFHS has been labeled as an “Excelling” school for the past three years, due to exceptional core test scores. Now our community high school earns the A+ honor for exceptional complete curriculum as well. Estrella Foothills is the only school in the West Valley to receive this award and ranks one of 25 campuses statewide to qualify with the A+ characteristic.

Principal Leslie Standerfer hopes that the A+ designation brings a sense of pride to the school. “This is validation by educational experts outside of the school that what we are doing is right – that we are provid-ing students with a quality education in a safe and supportive environment. For the community, I hope that the designation provides an assurance or confidence in what the school is doing,” said Standerfer.

Trevor Finton is the PGA Head Golf Professional at Golf Club of Estrella and is offering the following tip to make it an enjoyable season for golf.

“Before you go out and play, let’s talk about what we should be working on, the Practice Tee,” says Finton. “I want you to think about the last time you went to the practice tee for a practice session. Did you hit a 100 golf balls in an hour or even 30 minutes? In today’s world, we are all stressed for time and it causes us to rush through things, even our practice time. If you only have a limited amount of time to practice, make it count. Don’t worry about hitting every last ball; think quality, not quantity. Take some time and think about what you are going to work on during your practice session and what you would like to achieve. Make more practice swings than balls

In his latest novel, The Eagles of the Sierra Madre, A. J. Osorio writes a war romance of World War II. The story was inspired by the actual events of the 201st Fighter Squadron. Considerable research went into this historical fiction in order to vitalize the pilots of almost seven decades ago. Some said cuauhtli called them from the Sierra Madre Mountains. Others said they came because Rosie the Riveter had made so many airplanes, that the Army Air Corps needed more pilots to fly the then fastest aircraft: the P-47D Thunderbolt.

Whether it was a myth or the circumstances of war, two people, a pilot and a teacher, met in Texas. He would go to the Pacific War with the Aztec Squadron who chased the formidable Zero across the China Sea. She prom-ised to wait his return, but his engine stalled over a rainforest, leaving for a surprise ending.

This is A.J.’s eighth book for Llanos Publishing, LLC. It’s his fourth fic-tion; and has published nonfiction military history titles. His Silicon Valley distributor converted the book for a global market: Apple iPad, Sony Reader, Border’s Kobo, B&N’s Nook, and Diesel e-Books.

Jazz Class: Beginning Jazz, ages 6-12 years old, 12:30 to 1:30 pm. Our Jazz dance class will be energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, across the floor activities, and routines. Attire should be leotards and tights, but not required. Clothes should not be too loose. Jazz shoes are permitted but not required.

Hip Hop Class: Beginning Hip-Hop ages 6-12 from 1:40 to 2:40 pm. Our Hip Hop class will be geared to children who want to learn the high energetic, fun and lively dance form. Attire is com-fortable clothing, tennis shoes are recommended, but not required.

The flag will be presented by local boy Scout Troop Pack 360 and one of estrella’s own young talents hannah o’Dherde will be leading us in the singing of the national Anthem before the parade begins. water, lemonade, and otter pops will be provided and after the short parade passes the information center and a portion of the north lake we will cool off at the water park which will be opening early for parade attendees. This month, our focus is on mary Ann brungardt. mary Ann is a Front Desk Associate at Starpointe residents Club. She has been with CCmC in estrella since September of 2006, and has been greeting residents with a smile for almost five years. mary Ann is one of our more experienced employees, and has proven to be a team leader as it relates sharing her knowledge of front desk operations.

mary Ann was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota, and attended roncalli high School. During her high school years she was a four year cheerleader, and participated in track, basketball, and softball. She was also selected to be on the “Fashion board” and model for a women’s department store. once mary Ann turned sixteen and obtained her driver’s license, she could frequently be found cruising main Street with her friends. Somewhere between all of those activities, she worked part time at a grocery store to pay for private school tuition.

After high school, mary Ann moved to Denver, Colorado. She met her husband Dennis, for the first time as he arrived at her home to pick up her roommate for a date. one “slow and methodi-cal” thing led to another and 14 years later, bada-boom, they were married. mary Ann and her husband moved to Arizona, and in 2006 CCmC was fortunate enough to retain her as an entry

Desk Associate, where she has been welcoming incoming guests since. when asked what she loves about her job most, mary Ann said, “what I enjoy most is not only the opportunity to meet cur-rent residents, but seeing all the new potential residents and shar-ing with them what a great com-munity we have here. It allows me to communicate with many resi-dents and getting to know them on a personal basis. Also, I have met many new people within the company and established friend-

ships that will last forever. I enjoy the variety and flexibility the job offers.

when mary Ann isn’t at work, she enjoys golf, travel, and spending time with friends and family. She added, “occasionally, I like to try my luck at a casino...yes, on the slots!” The young-est of ten siblings, mary Ann said, “my husband and I did not ever envision how much we would enjoy being grandparents and it would be our aspiration to spend much more time bonding and spoiling our grandkids, Grace and elliot. we would also like to do a little more traveling and enjoying life.”

What fundamental elements does it take to make a “Super Dad?” Three local youngsters came forward, proud of their own dad, to offer most-fitting descriptions. Kristen Nicodemus (6) beamed, “My dad is a super dad because we went to the father/daughter dance together. He also likes to swing in the hammock together and jump on the trampoline with me. I love it when we go fishing together.” Kristen’s brother, Zachary (8) adds, “My dad is a super dad because we build lots of Legos together. He and I design really neat space ships. One of my favorite days was when he took me to the Lego store and we got to eat lunch together. Dad taught me how to build a chair from wood in the garage and also to build a neat bird house that is now in our backyard. My dad loves me very much.” Big brother, Daniel (10), concluded by saying, “My dad is a good example for other children because he helps with AWANA at our church. I have helped volunteer just like him. I love going to Suns and Diamondback games together. My favorite time out with my dad was when he took me to watch the Globe Trotters. Dad has showed me how to paint. We even painted my bedroom together. It was really neat seeing the finished work.”

Matt Nicodemus has taken his 23 years of experience in the paint industry and put it to work, recently opening his new business, “Consider It Finished Painting,” where he offers indoor and outdoor painting services at affordable prices with satisfaction guaranteed - qualities that are being

Matt has been married to his wife, Carolyn, since 1993. They met right here in the Valley of the Sun. Carolyn was in her senior year of high school. Matt, originally from Oregon, waited for five years until his future bride graduated from ASU. Carolyn chuckles at the fact that the couple never thought they would have children at all. “When we went through pre-marital classes and the subject of children was covered, we both thought that none of that applied to us,” she

remembers. “Oh, how glad we are that we so missed that mark. The kids have been the absolute most wonderful gift given to us,” she replied.

Carolyn concluded that there are many factors that earn her hubby, Matt, the “Super Dad” title. Besides his involvement with the AWANA program at Estrella Mountain Church, where he is known as “Commander,” he has instilled values that come from volunteering and his commitment to help others into his own children. As Matt puts his new dream to work and the new local painting business takes off, he will also be showing his children that it is possible to live the American dream!

Protecting Your Children From the Summer HeatHeat illness covers a spectrum of complaints, from relatively benign heat

cramps to potentially fatal heatstroke. As the famous “dry heat” of Phoenix quickly approaches, I often get questions from parents about various heat illnesses. As more and more children are participating in sports activities, we have to be alert when a child needs help. Children are more likely than adults to suffer from heat illness for several reasons, including:

• a higher ratio of body surface area to body mass• fewer sweat glands and, therefore, less sweat production• greater endogenous heat production• dependence on others to provide fluid and shadeCertain children are particularly susceptible to heat illness and require

special vigilance. They include children younger than 2 years, young athletes, and children with certain underlying medical conditions such as cystic fibro-sis, sickle cell disease, and diabetes insipidus.

heat Cramps: Are muscle contractions that most often affect the legs, shoulders, and abdomen, lasting a few minutes. They may occur at the time of exercise or, more commonly, later when relaxing. Treatment of heat cramps is entirely supportive. If they occur on a practice field or similar envi-ronment, the child should be moved to a cool place and instructed to rest. Provide plenty of cold fluids and salty foods but not with salt tablets.

heat exhaustion: There are two types of heat exhaustion: water deple-tion, and salt depletion. The presentation of the two conditions is similar. Heat exhaustion caused by water depletion is especially prevalent in children

who rely on others for their fluid intake. Salt depletion occurs when the child drinks an adequate amount of water, but does not have enough salt replace-ment. Affected children may exhibit nausea, vomiting, headache, and mild temperature elevation. These signs and symptoms are the same as those that may accompany viral illness, so it is imperative to be alert to the possibility of heat illness in the summer months. The child must be moved to a cool envi-ronment and instructed to rest. Milder cases can be treated with oral fluids and salty foods, provided the patient is not vomiting.

heatstroke: Characterized by core body temperature greater than 104.9° F. Children usually exhibit the classic triad of hyperthermia, coma, and hot, dry skin. Exertional heatstroke commonly occurs in young athletes, often at the start of the sport season before the patient is adequately conditioned and acclimated. Heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency and must be treated promptly and aggressively. Do not administer aspirin or Tylenol to a patient with heatstroke.

Every year, the media report stories of children left in a car on a hot day. It is important to realize the inside temperature of a car left in the sun when the outdoor temperature is between 86° F and 104° F can reach 120° F to 140° F in 5 minutes. Other heated environments that are particularly hazardous to young children are saunas, whirlpools, and hot tubs.

The length of time participants in sports should be limited when the tem-peratures are very high outside. It is recommended that for every 20 minutes of exercise, a child weighing 40 kg should drink 5 oz of fluid and a 60-kg ado-lescent should drink 9 oz. Clothing should be light-colored and lightweight.

Last September, Michael and I went to a college presentation where he got pumped up about the university and doing what was necessary to get accepted and funded. We talked about his dreams and the school’s expecta-tions from him as a student. The passion and the motivation were on fire - for a month. Then, October came. By November, there was no fire; the ash heap looked a little bleak and was in need of some serious fuel. By this time, I started seeing a negative pattern with my son. Instead of doing necessary research needed to be prepared for the rigors of academic study required at the university level, I found him playing video games. This wasn’t just a one-time occurrence. He was on the merry-go-round and didn’t seem to know how to get off. In addition, he was a little off-centered with his attitude and was in need of...an adjustment.

This got me thinking about times when Michael is focused and filled with a dream to accomplish something - times when the dream and roadmap are clear. However, there are also times when he gets wrapped up in video games or other fairly mindless activities. Don’t get me wrong, some video games can be a great way to veg-out, but at what point does our thirst for personal entertainment get in the way of our calling to do something con-structive and healthy?

It was time for me to address the matter. Before doing so, I knew I

What Michael needed was a reminder of his vision. As Dad, my job was to replant what I call the “seeds of vision” into his life -- to refuel his fire.

Without a clear vision and a roadmap to realize it, we lose our sense of purpose. Our personal sense of value dissipates and our choices often become unhealthy, rut-like. Why bother going to great lengths of arduous study or work when we have no clue as to the desired result? Why make the tough choices when the vision becomes foggy? Why develop any sense of self-disci-pline when we have little or no passion to see something come to fruition?

Dads, this is our calling -- to plant seeds of vision into our children’s lives. Our kids need us to identify their strengths and point them out regularly. Want to see an incredible transformation in the life of your family? Plant the seeds of vision in your children, help them create the roadmap (don’t do it for them, but come alongside to help), and watch their passion ignite. Yes, you’ll need to do this over and over, but when they are reminded about their dream (not ours) and when the path becomes clear, that’s when things get exciting. For Michael, the fire begins to dim every couple of months, needing more fuel. My job is to re-feed the fire, enabling him to see a clear path in which to walk and to go after his dream once more.

Secure Small Parts with Putty:

Securing small screws, fasteners, nails, etc., while working on a ladder can be a challenge. Drop one or two needed pieces and you’re up and down the ladder. Try placing a small glob of poster putty on the top of the ladder and stick the small parts into the putty to keep them secure.

relieve Painful Splinters:

We all get splinters in our fingers from time to time. Removing them can be difficult and painful. Try dabbing some teething medication, such as Orajel, on the area that contains the splinter. After a minute or so, the area is numb enough to work out the splinter with reduced pain.

Catch Drywall Dust:

When drilling into drywall, dust can pile on the floor quickly, result-ing in a messy project. You can catch most of this dust by taping an open envelope to the wall under the drill point.

loose Grout repair:

In order to replace loose or cracked grout between tiles or in threshold areas, scrape out the loose grout and recaulk as normal. When the area is dry, apply a bead of silicone caulk to help hold the new grout in place.

This Spring the Arizona Educational Foundation gave Estrella FoothillsHigh School an A+ ranking, valid for the next three years. EstrellaFoothills was one of just 25 campuses statewide to be awarded thedistinction, and the only one in the West Valley. Schools are assessed in the areas of pupil focus and support, schoolculture, active teaching and learning, curriculum, leadership, communityand parent involvement and assessment data. In February, a team visitedthe campus for two days and observed every classroom according toPrincipal Leslie Standerfer. The college and career preparatory programs,performing and culinary arts facilities were just some of the elementsthat pushed Estrella Foothills to the top. Estrella Foothills High School opened in 2001 and currently has 1,031 students enrolled. Principal Standerfer and her team have compiled the required information for the A+ rating for the last 4 years and the application process took 40 hours to complete. The high school has also been labeled as "Excelling" by the state for thelast three years in a row, and was only one of four schools in the WestValley to receive the label in 2010.

Just last month the Golf Club of Estrells’s Player’s Grill expanded servicefrom their hearty breakfast and delectable lunches to now include dinnerservice three nights a week. Dinner is available from 5 – 8 p.m. Wednesday,Thursday and Friday evenings both inside the Grill and on the patio underthe cooling mist of multiple fans and misting systems. In the kitchen, Chef Frank Bruno and his culinary team prepare an array of weekly specials from the freshest local ingredients. Recent entrees havefeatured London Broil, a juicy ½ pound gourmet burger, Pan-seared salmonfilet topped with shrimp supreme sauce, and fire-grilled carne asada servedwith corn tortillas and fresh pico de gallo. Weekly specials will changethroughout the Summer always keeping choices fresh.
