Quackery

It is a form of a health fraud, is any advertisement, promotion, or sale of products and services that have not been scientifically proven safe and effective. It is being operated by a Quack.

Quack

A Quack is an individual that has little or no professional qualifications to practice medicine. He/ She also pretentiously uses meaningless medical jargon and relies on scare tactics, paranoid accusations, and quick fixes.

Three major characteristics of health quackery• First, it is a Big business. A huge amount

of money is spent on fraudulent health products and services.• Second, it multiplies and spreads fast.• Lastly, it thrives on individual who are

diagnosed with illnesses that are known to have no cure.

Three forms of Quackery• Medical Quackery - includes cures, treatments, and

remedies of various health conditions that are drugless or bloodless in nature.• Nutrition Quackery - involves promotion of food

fads and other nutritional practices that claim to be all-natural. These are believed to have beneficial properties of multiple plants in one product.• Device Quackery - makes use of miraculous gadgets

(such as dials, gauges, electrodes, magnets and blinkers) that are believed to cure certain conditions.

The Quick and Inexpensive CureBecause of the high cost and slow legitimate medical attention, many consumers turn to quackery. They further believe that quacks could provide the fastest relief and the most inexpensive cure to their illnesses or health problems. Many consumers who are afflicted with incurable diseases are given false hopes by quacks.

Ignorance

Many Filipinos, especially those in the rural areas, have little knowledge about health, medicine, and legitimate medical practitioners. They are easily hired to quack remedies and health fads. Poverty can also be the cause for seeking quack treatments.

Fear of Surgery or Legitimate TreatmentMany individuals fear surgery and doctors or other kinds of legitimate medical treatment. Quacks promise and guarantee painless medical treatment to the ill and sick.

Effect of Placebos

A placebo is an inert medication used for its psychological effect or for purposes of comparison in an experiment. It is a substance-like sugar pill which does not have medicinal value and is administered only for psychological effect. The quack’s false hopes, wishful thinking, and promises all provide a placebo effect.

Hypochondriac

Some patients are hypochondriac those whose depression on the mind are often centered on imaginary physical ailments. The patient believes in help being provided by quacks, and the “problem” disappears.
