My “Energy Efficient” Home
For the purpose of NDTV-Grundfos Mission Energy Challenge 2014

Energy Efficient home by design!
Elevation of thebuilding was carefullydesigned to avoid heatingress
• Heat reflective tiles(20% of the area)
• Heat reflective whitepaint (10% of thearea)
•Rat-trap based bricklayout for the elevationwall (50% of the area)
Other Eco-friendly features!
• Ground water rechargingAll the rain water falling on our built-up area, is channelized into a 4 feet hole, allowing for ground water recharging!
• Use of fly-ash cementFor all the structures (except for slabs), PPC was used instead of OPC
• Harvest day-lightWe have designed our house, keeping in mind the advantage of allowing day-lighting
Steps I will carry out to reduce
energy consumption
Quantitative description of step
1. Paint/tile the roof-top with high SRI
paint/tiles for avoiding heat ingress
on the top floor.
The entire area of 1100 sqft of rooftop area will
be insulated from the exterior, providing benefits
of reduced heat ingress into the house.
2. To add to the saving from the SRI
paint, the inside part of the roof will
be dropped by 4-6 inches, creating a
false ceiling.
This structure will trap air between the main and
the new roof, which will help not conduct heat
from the top of the building into the rooms.
3. The entire house will be converted
with energy efficient equipment's for
lighting and refrigeration
a. All lighting fixtures will be converted to CFL’s,
LED’s and T5’s
b. Installation of minimum of 3-star rated
appliances (Installed a 5-star geyser!)
4. An Online tool to campaign the
benefits of Rooftop Solar PV, which
include internal and external
communication
It is an online tool which will help assess the
rooftop potential for a solar PV across the region
of Hyderabad, India.
Challenge!
“High Albedo” Rooftop
• “Heat reflective” Rooftop• Rooftop was completely coated with a “heat reflective” SRI coat over the plastered, water proofed surface

False ceiling!
• False ceiling!• On the top floor, for both the rooms the ceiling was dropped by 4-5 inches to create an air gap, providing additional heat insulation

include internal and external communication
Successfully completed
Successfully deployed the tool intopublic forums like facebook, twitter,
LinkedIn. Have got good feedback via phone, email, etc.
Into the future
• Composting of food and organicwaste
• Time frame: Within 2 months
• Solar PV• We have plans to install a SolarPV system on our rooftop with acapacity of 0.75-1 kW (tosupport for lighting and fewother systems)• Time frame: Within 2-3months
